I've been working on interactive blast doors from The Phantom Menace. It was suggested that perhaps my fellow Jedi might like to know about this project as well so here is a WIP thread for it. The main thread can be found at the Replica Prop Forum here:

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=84433

And here are some current pics:

It has been since April, but tonight there has been a decisive turn of events: The blast doors have stood up for the first time! I now have the structural elements mainly in place. The next step is to homogenize the paint a bit, then to build the interactive light-up unit which should go quickly.

Here are some very poor pics.

What we're aiming for:

This thing I'm holding is the "saber receptacle" which will mount on the back to funnel the kids sabers to the switch.

Here's some shots of the structure in back which holds it together:

Here's where the water comes out:

Love it, Very cool!

But I'm curious, maybe I missed an explantion, but.. how is it interactive? I get that there will be orange lights 'molten metal'.. but am not sure where water comes into it? is there going to be a hidden track somewhere you drag your lightsaber around and it lights up as you go..?

I'm confused about the water as well, but I REALLY like this idea! Kids will absolutely love this, hey, adults will love this too!

Thanks! The water thing was a joke because I haven't cut the sink tube yet.

Basically, the kid's saber will go through the sinktube and into a polycarbonate tube in back which has a switch in it. This switch will turn on the haloween lights to make it look like the doors are molten. This part is not done yet but you can see a diagram over at RPF:

Yep, I read that thread.

So, will the saber be able to move along a track or anything or is that it, they put the saber in the hole, the lights come on, pose, remove saber?

I may be trying to replicate a certain scene, yes. Smile

Seriously, though, this came about for two reasons. Qui-Gon because in my first troop and thereafter, kids kept calling me qui-gon. I had no beard, wrong tunics, etc but that was consistently how they saw me. So I'm doing Qui-Gon. Ben

Then I came across goldie's "bubbling cauldron" instructable and thought "Hey, that looks JUST LIKE the molten metal in the blast doors!"

That was in April. Mad
