You really should be on the R2D2 builders forum for a question like this. Go to http://astromech.net and http://movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/r2builder. On the Yahoo Group in the files section look for the Mike Senna wood blueprints folder and you'll be on your way.

Quite a few beautiful R2's have been made using wood.

Crix....were you able to find the blueprints?

I do have a complete tutorial on building the legs....if that is a help..

I also have a spare Aspects dome that you can have...it is the correct depth...but Aspects re-designed the top...but with some fiberglas...you should be able to use it...

We will talk....
and....I have a WHOLE bunch of stuff saved to my computer...
When "Operation Stabilization" takes place...I can download everything to discs for you..

Very Happy

I am here to help....so please.....don't think that you are bugging me....

I have noted that some of the files that are available are in a program that I don't have on my computer either...
so I was not able to open them...
but I do have blueprints...
and the leg tutorial that I have is REALLY detailed...so you should have no problem with the legs....

I also have a few resin pieces to give you to use as templates...
and while re-making some of my things...I made templates of some of the stuff....

and...

of course...
you have the big advantage of a huge template in the form of my R2...

btw....

R2 is ready for stabilization....
so...
see....
I am bugging you too...

R2 is alive....well....and done (for now)....

wood and sintra never looked so good!

I did a serious poking around both the Yahoo Group and the Astromech forums..
one thing I did find you was the all important dome layout...it is a series of sheets that you tape together to get the proper dome layout to make the cuts for the psi flashers ...placement of the Radar Eye...etc...

I also added all of the other blueprints to my file that I am starting for you...however..
I really didn't find the frame blueprints..
I do have the leg tutorials...which are important...
I am also trying to find the blueprint for the skins...

The wood frame blueprints can be found in the files section of the Yahoo group, in the "Senna Files" Folder.

If you can't open the blueprints, then perhaps you don't have the proper CAD viewer (?)
Most people use the eDrawings viewer.
http://www.solidworks.com/sw/products/free-cad-software-downloads.htm
(some of the blueprints are in PDF format which requires Adobe Acrobat reader to view.)

We highly recommend that everyone read the FAQ page on astromech.net
Most all of this info is on there.

The Sit-n-spin works well as a dome bearing when it sits level, (droid standing in 2 leg mode) however if you build your droid for R/C or 3 leg mode, the Sit-n-spin may not be the best option. It tends not to work so well if it's tilted. For a static droid, it is a nice low-cost option though.

I don't think I do have the proper viewer...I will try the link you provided...
thank you... Smile

As far as the sit and spin...

I have the wood version of R2...
he had two legs...
but...
he now has three..

he is not RC...
and my dome sits pretty secure and always has...

I have a McMaster Aluminum Dome Bearing Ring mounted to the body with extra long threaded rods that goes into holes in the sit and spin..
the holes are dead on and there is no slop to the holes...so the dome really sits secure...

I gotchya! You are using the Sit-n-spin as the base ring for the squirrel guard dome, but not as a dome spin bearing. I was referring to it as it would be used for a dome bearing. It spins fine when it's level but when you tilt it, it tends to bind up some.

Yea, It's easy to forget that others are on dialup and can't download the big programs.

Awesome Crix...

I have R2 to the point where we can stabilize those outer legs...
I am working on painting some of his "out of the way" places this morning...and he is done (for now....are they ever really done?)
I can't do the stabilization this weekend...
my sister is in from Salt Lake City...and her and I are going to hang out tomorrow..
and in a few hours I am off with my chainsaw for another volunteer prairie restoration workday...
next weekend is out too...
another workday on Saturday..
and Sunday is the "Star Wars in Concert" that you and I will both be at...

maybe the next weekend?

We can go over some of the information I have...with what you have...
I can give you the Aspects dome...
and you are on your way...

Very Happy
