I know a lot of people like to get an opportunity to meet SW Celebrities...

Very Happy

sounds like a plan...

I tried putting padding between the outer and inner layers of that proto-type to make it look like earcaps...
and it didn't protrude out enough...wasn't definitive

OK. Good news bad news (depending on how you want to look at it)

I spent most of this morning going through screencaps from this site: http://disparue.org/gallery/movies.php

There's too WAY many pictures (4600+) and this site doesn't allow hot linking so you're going to have to wait for me to grab the pics and host them myself.

But, I HAVE found what I feel is about as definitive proof as we're going to get on a couple points we've been sticking on.

1st: Luke's jacket does indeed have lining. In one or two of the screen grabs from the Luke suiting up in the hospital scene you can distinctly see an orange silk like lining, whether its padded I can't tell you for certain but tbh I assume it is.

2nd: I'm pretty much sold that the jacket is an outerwear nylon material not too unlike the stuff Rachel is using. The more I look at it, the more and more it looks like the material "puffy" jackets are made of.

3rd: Found an interesting quirk, the ESB vests have the shoulder straps sewn over the top of the back panel (you know the front in the other two movies) where in the other movies its sewn under, so I'd assume that ESB vests are definitely different than ANH & ROTJ issue.

Another thing I've noticed is that the skull caps remind me of Astronaut skull caps. I haven't seen anything that is exactly what we're looking for but in basic shape and construction they seem to be very similar, especially the ones I've seen have a major detail in common over the flight caps we normally associate them with, covered ears.

Yeah, I think the costume-makers had copied a pattern from a British WW2-era flying helmet. Search the web for "RAF Type D" (or "Type C" or "Type E") and you will find more similiarities than with anything else. (I have mentioned it before....)

I got myself a RAF helmet and compared it to my home-sewn version which I had made based on screen-caps. The differences in were quite few, pattern-wise.

I'm fully aware, which is something I keep in the back of my head but that doesn't stop me from exhausting all avenues of locating it if its a found item of some sort.

Quote:
Comlink Squares
Hoth personnel usually wore a gadget which looks like a communications device, attached to the outer vest on the left side of the chest. It was worn by Luke Skywalker on both his pilot and outdoor uniforms. While most of the surface of this device is clearly electronic and functional, there is also a horizontal row of four square buttons which seem to serve a decorative purpose. STAR WARS Technical Journal v.3 identifies them as a piece of rank insignia. The squares seem superficially similar to the squares on Imperial officer rank plaques, though their interpretation is almost certainly different. (The superficial similarity simply means that humans in the Palpatine Era have a fondness for insignia consisting of simple coloured geometric shapes.)

Colour configurations vary, but the total number of squares is always four. Non-commissioned personnel have red and grey squares. Officers have red and blue squares.

The three officer insignia studied to date are all different. Interpretation is necessarily tentative and speculative, due to the small observation set. The problem is complicated by the fact that we only know the formal rank of one of the examples: Luke Skywalker, who was a [Wing] Commander. Princess Leia had a high status within the Alliance, but it is unclear whether her political and diplomatic station translates into a military rank higher or lower than that of Skywalker. Solo did not even possess an honorary commission at the time of the Battle of Hoth; his insignia was probably only informally lent in order to give him clearance to enter certain Echo Base facilities. His insignia probably ranks him lower than Skywalker, but there is no way to be certain. The deck officer of Echo Base, named Tigran Jamiro in the SWCCG, is of unknown rank but at least the two leftmost squares are readable; the right squares are unclear but appear to be blue.

Tigran Jamiro

Commander Luke Skywalker [tauntaun patrol]

Commander Luke Skywalker [starfighter pilot]

for anyone still following this thread..
I have indeed gotten around to it..

Over the weekend I finished up both of the box pleated sections for the sleeves and figured out a way to add the seaming detaill that runs in the front and back..which included sewing a small strip of batting to give the seams the right look...
I tried it without the batting first...and those double seams didn't show up well...

suffice it to say that ended up to be a severe pain in the butt

and...

most importantly...

here is a photo of a piece of my flightsuit on top of the jacket fabric...
I think that the fabric that I chose ended up to be a pretty good selection...
as you can see...it has a slight sheen and is lighter than the flightsuit...

I hope to get back to it tonight and tomorrow and start piecing things together and post some new photos...

I am going REALLY slow with this project because of the fabric....
when you sew fabric of this nature...you more or less get a permanent hole so making mistakes and ripping out the stitching is not a good idea...because the stitch holes remain....
since additional fabric is not available at this time...I really have to be careful with what I have...

That's wrong. The right red pip is actually orange.
