Knowing there was a good chance that I would be the "lone Rebel" yesterday, I brought along my Artoo unit to assist in holding off the hoards of Imperials at Cantigny yesterday for an appearance we did for "Toys For Tots".

All I can say is WOW. The place was packed all day. I have done a LOT of events over the past 10 years and I can honestly say that this event stands out as having some of the most enthusiastic patrons of all. Me and Artoo were there for about 4 hours and I don't think more than a minute or two went by that someone was not taking a photo with the group.

The Toys for Tots boxes were filling up nicely as people got into the event free if they brought a toy.

We were in a room with a local Lego builders group that was all part of the weekends activities. The Lego Builders were also over the top enthusiastic and had us do some photos with their Lego guitars. My Artoo officially became a rock star.

Even the people from the kitchen came out for some photos...
very cool!

A really good time was had by all...I wish I could get out there again today, but we are sending some of our finest there today...whether in Rebel or Imperial costume...it matters not....

This Saturday, members of NSB did a "two fer"....
two events for the Salvation Army back to back...

first up:

Neither rain, nor cold, nor gale force winds kept members of Nar Shaddaa Base and the Midwest Garrison from their appointed duties of bell ringing for the Salvation Army in front of a Walgreens in Lake In The Hills IL.

Saturday, December 15, 2012

Salvation Army Bell Ringing Station
Walgreens – Lake in the Hills, IL

Participants:

Jon Weger (9142) – Snow Trooper
Phyllis Schulte (1951) – Hoth Trooper - Nar Shaddaa BAse
Cheryl Whitaker (3127) – Biker Scout - Nar Saddaa Base
Steve Szyndrowski (3052) – Darth Vader - Nar Shaddaa Base
Roland Batrouni (4186) - Stormtrooper
Tyler Meier (50488) - Tusken

Even with the weather being so lousy, we still managed to get quite a few donations, and took lots photos with passing patrons and the employees at the Walgreens. The folks working at the Walgreens were baffled at first by the unusual bell ringers they got for their store...but joined in the spirit in no time at all.

The wind was so fierce that Darth Vader's (undercover RFT Steve Szyndrowski) cape was mostly straight out behind him and the ribbons I had tied to the bow on my Hoth Trooper pack were also flying straight out at shoulder height. Lol...I know that for 2 straight hours I rang that bell non stop...I now have wrists that can break steel.....lol..

Our event co-ordinator and NSB member Cheryl Whitaker (aka Jedi Whinter Fenlynn - undercover in Biker Scout) will be getting totals from the Salvation Army office sometime early this week.

After our 2 hours out in the cold, it was time to head out to our next troop; the Salvation Army Toy Drive in the next town over!

Here are some photos from our Walgreens troop:

Then...
we "moved along"

Saturday, December 15, 2012
Salvation Army Toy Drive
Crystal Lake, IL

Particpants:

Jon Weger (9142) – Darth Vader
Phyllis Schulte (1951) – Hoth Trooper- Nar Shaddaa Base
Cheryl Whitaker (3127) – Biker Scout - Nar Shaddaa Base
Steve Szyndrowski (3052) – Rebel Fleet Trooper- Nar Shaddaa Base
Roland Batrouni (4186) - Stormtrooper
Tyler Meier (50488) - Tusken

In the words of event co-ordinator and undercover NSB Jedi Whinter Fenlynn (Cheryl Whitaker):

"After being in the cold, rain and wind for our 2-hour Salvation Army Bell Ringing Station in Lake in the Hills, we were greeted with warmth and hot chocolate at our 2nd Salvation Army troop of the day… The S.A. Toy Drive!

We made our way from one troop to another and arrived at approximately 12:00 and stayed for about 2 1/2 hours. The parking lot of the Salvation Army Toyland Toy Shop was bustling with cars that carried all kinds of toys and clothes being dropped off for the children this holiday season. Among those in the parking lot was the Star 105.5 BIG Rolling Radio as they broadcast live throughout the entire event. Another addition was the Salvation Army Emergency Response Vehicle, where they handed out delicious chili and hot chocolate to everyone.

For a brief time while the rest of the Empire was changing..
the Rebellion had the better odds:

During our visit, the S.A. Toy Truck was filled many times over with all kinds of toys, hats and gloves, bicycles, clothing, etc. We took photos with many of the people that came in and donated, danced to the Christmas jingles that the radio station played, and Lord Vader even did a short interview with the DJ’s.

Oh, and we also tried out a couple of the bicycles that were donated, just to make sure that they were safe for the children.

Thank you again to everyone that came out for this. We must do this again next year!! I know the folks at the Salvation Army were so grateful to have us this Friday and Saturday."

Here are more photos from our Toy Drive troop:

I don't know about the rest of you, but as a member of the "older generation", I try to find some of the lost meaning of Christmas that I remember growing up in the 1950's.....
This event, plus the Toys For Tots and Salvation Army Toy drive helped me get much more meaning out of the Christmas season.

Merry Christmas to you and yours...
and a Blessed holiday season....

The MWG was contacted by local reporter for all things "geeky" Elliot Serrano to do something a little out of the ordinary. Elliot asked us to support a team of zookeepers from Lincoln Park Zoo as they participated in the North Ave Beach Polar Bear Plunge on New Years Day. The zookeepers were raising fundns for Polar Bears International and hoped that having MWG members in costume chase the "rebel zookeepers" into Lake Michigan would help call attention to their cause.

Mission accomplished! I can assure you that everyone on the beach for the Plunge knew we were there.

We started out meeting at the lion house at Lincoln Park Zoo and when Elliot met up with us we then made our way to a room behind one of the exhibits to suit up. Next we had a several block walk to the staging area for the Wampa Plunge which was North Ave Beach. We made our way onto the sand and we had to wait a bit for Lord Vader as he was (as always) being asked for photos so it took Steve a little longer to get to the water.

We gathered with the Zookeepers for some photos on the sand and (while I was struggling with removing my Hoth boots in the back of the crowd) on queue the Empire chased the Zookeepers into the cold Lake Michigan waters. As soon as I got my Hoth boots off and sandals on both NSB Rebels Ashely McClintock and I also went into the Lake. Also heading into the water was Neil Auer's wife and she did a GREAT job! Later Kevin (RDB) also removed his TK boots and his calf pieces and went into the Lake as well.

Air temperature was about 20 degrees and water temp was about 30 degrees but the sun was shining and that made things feel a little warmer.

Two members of our team presented checks to the Zookeepers totaling $250.00 as contribution to the Polar Bears International cause in addition to our costumed presence at this event.

My sincere thanks to all who got out of bed early on a cold New Years day...drove down to the lake...walked to and from the beach in the cold and are now busily removing sand from every crevice of their costume.
You guys...as always...ROCKED IT!!

Elliot was very happy and did let us know that we did our job....and did it well!!

The Rebels take the water:

Participants:
Ashley McClintock - NSB - Endor Commando
Steve Szyndrowski - SL3052/NSB - Vader
Cheryl Whitaker- TB3127/NSB- New Years Scout
Tyler Meier - DZ50488 - Tusken
Neil Auer - IG3446 - Gunner
Kevin Skiera - TK9336 - Stormtrooper
Quincy Newkirk - TB9988 - Scout
Kathy VanBeuningen - TS9989 -Snowtrooper
Phyllis Schulte - TK1951/NSB - Hoth Trench Trooper/event co-ordinator

What does Vader (and NSB RFT Steve Szyndrowski) do when he has a little time on his hands?

Nobody does festive like Cheryl Whitaker (NSB Jedi Whinter Fenlynn).

Go Team!

Hi ho...hi ho...it's off to "work" we go..

Go Mrs 3446!! Very Happy

Star Wars Comic release party, Challenger's Comics in Chicago, IL 1-13-13

We were asked to help celebrate Dark Horses' New Star Wars comic book release. The comic book store had prizes to raffle off, toys to give away, and the new comic just released for sale that day. The host had a room just off the main entrance where the toys and prizes were set up. Also there was a table full of Star Wars cupcakes, chips, and cake. We mingled around the store, took photos with patrons, and as we heated up in the store, we milled about out in front of the store drawing in people off the street. It was a very laid back event and everyone seemed to really enjoy presence. There was a film student documenting the event for you-tube, as well as Elliot Seranno from the newspaper RedEye. Jimmy Mac from the forcecast podcast was scheduled to be there, but was unable to make it, but lets be honest...we were the stars We also passed out information to a few potential new members, on both sides of the force
All in all, a very fun troop, and a terrific event host. They were very happy with us, as the event host just emailed me, "You were by FAR the best guests that we've had so far. You can be sure that we're going to have you back as soon as we possibly can come up with an excuse to! LOL!!"
I have also been told a donation of $50 to the American Diabetes Assoc. has been made in our name

10 troopers at 3 hours each = 30 hours total

Though this costume is sometimes called a Dark Jedi...
it is actually a RL approved New Republic Jedi costume...
and
for this very small event (a 3 year old's birthday)...I just added my Count Dooku lightsaber...
and
viola'
Sith Apprentice....lol..

$100.00 donation to Make A Wish was made for our appearance at this party.

Of course the star of the show was RFT Steve Szyndrowski who appeared as Darth Vader and was the only character requested by the family.

My sincere thanks to Steve for stepping up for this event.

Mission completed:
Naperville St. Patrick's Day Parade - 3-16-13

The weather was miserable...
some snow
some drizzle
lots of wind
and freezing temps...
but that never stops the Rebellion!

We had 4 members participate in the parade....a little thin compared to previous years...but we are known to always be outnumbered...but never outgunned!

Participants:
Samantha (Queen of the Universe) - Padme
Gina (Destiny Froste)- Tonnika sister
Mike (Starwurz) - Obi Wan Kenobi
Me - (Schph Gochi) - Snowspeeder Pilot

One of our new flags at the lead of the group:

And...the female members portray the Irish flag of green, white and orange:

On Friday, 5-3-2013 Members of Nar Shaddaa Base were asked by one of the local television stations to be part of a news series that focuses on what is going on in the neighboring suburbs. We were asked to the taping as "set decoration" for a piece on the upcoming 4th Annual Joliet Library Star Wars Day. This event has grown to take on a life of its own from a scant 300 visitors the first year to over 2,000 visitors last year (only its 3rd year). They expect 4,000 people this year.

A photo is worth a thousand words...so this little video is worth even more in explaining Star Wars Day. Please watch the entire video as you will see the Rebellion many times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhyt2SrciA8&feature=youtu.be

A compilation video of the segements on the television station can be found here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9YnsR5nypVk&feature=youtu.be

Starting at 3:10 we are in the background
At 4:40-5:36 they begin to scan our group and to describe the event we will be partnering in hosting which is the 4th Annual Joliet Library Star Wars Day on June 1, 2013.

When you look at the space that we are occupying indoors for the taping, that will be the display area for the Rebellion for Star Wars Day. The Empire will be centered at the Library, but the Joliet Historical Museum will be the home of the Rebellion. Displays at the Historical Museum will also include the R2 Builders.

Many, many thanks to the members who got up early enough to be in Joliet by 4:00 AM for the taping.

Rebel Participants:

Woulf - Steve Mamman - X-Wing Pilot
Schph Gochi - Hoth Trench Trooper
and
Artoo Gochi as R2D2

We were joined by 501st member:
J. Tampa - Darth Vader
R. Boutrani - TK
T. Myer - Tusken
K. VanBeuningen- Snowtrooper

Not your average Library event!
On June 1, 2013 NSB was on hand along with members of Tatooine Base and Mos Espa Base for the 4th Annual Joliet Library Star Wars Day.

In addition to the RL Bases, we had representatives from the Midwest Garrison, Wisconsin Garrison and Black Ice Squad, Northern Darkness Garrison, Bloodfin Garrison, Great Lakes Garrison and 70th Explorers Garrison.

We also had representatives of the Mandolorian Mercs, The Jedi Assembly and the R2 Builders.

In all around 80 costumed people were on hand at the two venues for this event. The Empire occupied the Joliet Public Library and the Joliet Historical Society was home to the Rebel Base.

We also had artists Dave Dorman, Mikey Babinski, Janine Jender, Steve Palanica and Jim Tampa.

And if that wasn't enough for you...
we also had Orli Shoshan.

I think photos are worth a thousand words....so...
rather than blah blah blah anymore...
here are some photos:

I urge you to go here to see more photos...

but sorry for the chaotic manner in which they are orgnized. As one of the 2 organizers of the costumed characters for this event...I was quite busy all day...in addition to the usual, I also was signed up as a target for SWA, our table, and a few other things...so I didn't get many photos taken for myself...so I asked if I could steal from everyone else...
and...
btw...
we even had a Bluesmobile (shield your eyes...I am wearing my hot weather and informal Jedi costume)..

Thanks Rich for supporting my sagging body by the end of the day...it was a looooooooong two days for me..

A video (though...as you will see it was put together by the local Chamber of Commerce so a lot of it is a big commercial....lol...) that covers only a small portion of this event.

Sorry about not getting this on sooner. My mother landed in the ER right after this event & it kind of through all things off. Mom is at home & I think improving---at least hopefully.

Ok I have the vid link to youtube for the Star Wars Day at the Joliet Public Library Link:
This is of the lightsaber demo. I hope it works.

The Racine WI 4th of July Parade is the 5th largest 4th of July Parade in the entire country and I can tell you that is a fact. The sheer numbers of spectators lining the street and length of this parade is mind boggling.

Every year the Wisconsin Garrison builds a truly remarkable float for this parade and these are NOT whimpy floats. They are the length of a flatbed and pulled by a "Big Rig".

This years theme was Lego Star Wars and the float was (as always) genius!
I will let the photos below do the talking with regard to the floats awesomeness.

Sincere thanks to all NSB members who came out to join in the fun. It was one of the rare occasions where members from both our States were able to be in the same place at the same time:

Participants:
