Mark Chu-Lin and the CCG have invited the Rebel Legion to attend the Sutter Memorial Hospital visit on June 20th.

WHAT: Visiting the Child Life Program at Sutter Memorial Hospital
WHEN: Saturday, June 20, from 10 AM to 12 PM (please arrive at 9 AM to get ready)
WHERE:Sutter Memorial Hospital
5151 F Street
Sacramento, CA 95819
Phone: 916-733-1021
RSVP DEADLINE: Sunday June14th
EVENT LEVEL: Formal level, Canon attire
NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS: 4-5 from the Rebel Legion
CHARACTER TYPES: Canon formal costumes (appropriate for children/families). If anyone is an R2 builder, an R2-D2 would be welcome as well.
IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING HEALTH: For the safety of the patients in the hospital, if anyone is feeling ill the day before the visit you must contact Mark Chu-Lin and remove yourself as a volunteer (Mark's phone number is in the Yahoo Group Post). This is per hospital rules.

The Child Life Program is located on the sixth floor. You can attempt to park on F Street and there is a parking lot in back of the hospital. The Child Life program will validate our parking for the lot. We will meet in the main lobby near the gift shop at 9 AM where we will be escorted up to the sixth floor to a space where we can change. You may want to bring your own pen to sign stuff with. Due to the limited space and the Child Life Center's for kinds of characters, I can only take about four to five 501st costumes. I will also be contacting the RL and Ed about R2. Given the requests of the Child Life Center, this will be treated as a canon event.

Should you feel ill the day before our visit, please contact Mark Chu-Lin (phone number available in the Yahoo Group post)

Directions from the Modesto area:
1) Take CA-99 NORTH
2) Continue on I-80-BR EAST towards RENO
3) Take the H STREET exit
4) Take a right on H ST
5) Make a left on 50TH ST
6) Turn Right on F ST

General Guidelines

* No elements of violence, weapons, or suggestions of physical harm / death. (Lightsabers are okay!)
* No candy, cell phones, photo cameras or video cameras (the hospital will tell us if there are any exceptions and only certain people will be allowed to do any photography or video recording)
* If you are feeling ill just before or at the hospital event, you need to let the event coordinator know ASAP.

Do's and Don'ts for interacting with the kids:

* Stay with the guide and follow their lead. Not every child wants visitors.
* Introduce yourself.
* Smile.
* Crouch down to child's level (VERY easy for us, eh?)
* Ask general questions or questions that relate to the visit. Do you like Star Wars? Does your bear have a name? Friendly questions
* Thank a child for letting you visit.
* End with a positive note.

* Do not wander off on your own.
* Do not ask patients why they are in the hospital.
* Do not say, "Get well soon".
* Do not make promises you can not keep like "I will see you soon".
* Do not talk about your own hospital experience.
* Do not make religious references (like God will heal you).
* Do not use adult or medical humor.
* Do not make assumptions about a child's age or gender - illness can drastically change the way a child grows / looks, be careful.
* Do not scold a child for their mood or behavior. Being in the hospital can be difficult and they have a reason to be in a bad mood.

Please make a post in this thread if you can volunteer in costume and please list the costume (s) you have available. As usual for any formal level event, we will want to avoid duplicates of named face characters (for example, keep it to only one Princess Leia, one Luke - etc).

Here's a little belated Embarassed report of how things went:

This was yet another wonderful hospital visit. Thayne appeared as a Stormtrooper, Mark was a Biker Scout, and I wore my Anakin. We started off by interacting with some thrilled kids in the play room. A staff member took photos of us with the kids and we passed out some goodies. From there, we went room to room for individual visits. The best part was hearing the gasp of excitement from the kids in their rooms while we were standing by in the hallway preparing to enter.

There were a couple of visitation requests from the ER. Apparently, word travels fast at that hospital. We stopped by a couple of beds in the ER before ending our visit.

As always, a very worthwhile experience. anakin
