I hope I don't get in trouble for posting a new topic if this question has been addressed already, but trust me - I did thorough searches of the forums and did not find an answer, so don't say I didn't try!

I'm wondering what you guys used to make the strap for your leg flares. I've seen the solutions here and here. My problem with the first method is the spray painting... couldn't that start wearing off on the suit? Perhaps there is dark green webbing to be found somewhere as a better alternative. My issue with the second method is, well, I've never seen an army duffel bag for less than $30. But maybe used ones are more common than I thought and I'm just not looking in the right places. Confused

I'm also just generally curious about this. So please feel free to comment away - even if your solution wasn't necessarily practical, I'd still be interested to know! Smile Thanks~

the second one was written by me... so that's what i did Smile

the army navy stores near me always have used bags for cheap, plus they are already weathered! new ones will be pricier, but the old, beat up ones are great. you just need to find them without damage.

So buy one, and use the leftover material to make more. You can always offer them to other people. Smile

If you have a fabric store nearby, you can usually find heavy OD Green canvas that can be used for flare holders.

Lisa and Bryan are using that canvas material for theirs (Far left and right)

Great ideas, thanks all!

I've still been on the lookout at places where they sell fabric, but no luck... everything in dark green seems to be either soft weave or vinyl. There is one army surplus store across town, however the way to it is traffic central, so I'm not eager on looking there again. But, I did think of something else - I believe an old dark green messenger bag of mine is still living at my parents' house, and with luck it will have enough canvas on it. The strap on that thing is broken anyway.

Heh, not a bad idea. If it comes down to that, I will... unless it turns out I suck at making them? :P

I've seen some people use three strips of 2-inch Olive Drab webbing. Sew two of the straps together and then sew the third over them with the loops for the flares (and to hide the original seam). Add some velcro to secure it and you are good-to-go.

I had a green/gray pair of pants, that had tears and were ready for the dumpster. I cut two rectangles from one of the legs and dyed it only a short time with some leftover brown dye. Result: Olive drab fabric.

I ended up ripping apart an old OD flightsuit and got some great material for it.
