I wanted to post on here some thoughts about birthday parties that I think is now time to address. I am not too supportive on getting in the habit of supporting and providing characters for birthday parties. There are special circumstances that I would rather see us consider like special needs, severe hadicap or terminal illness requests etc. or perhaps a base member request for parties. If we start doing these types of events vs. sticking with larger scale parades and more "public" appearances, I fear we will back ourselves into a corner by getting so many of these party requests that it will be all we do, or be ina position to have to pick and choose who will and will not get party support on multiple date requests. I strongly don't want the RL and Freedom Base members to be thought of by the public as FREE party entertainment and hired performers for their children's b-day parties. I don't believe these party requests emulate the spirit of why we are here and why we do what we do. I encourage discussion on this point and if you feel you still want to support these requests, let us make a BASE decision to do so or not to do so. Thoughts everyone?

I highly agree with you Rick.

One thing that we are doing over in the Carolina Garrison is developing a birthday card that we can send. Perhaps someone here could design a card that could be sent out on behalf of the Base to wish the child Happy Birthday.

I do support granting requests of sick children, terminal illness, etc.

I am completely support of Rick's comments.
Doing birthdays in general make us seem like "hired entertainment", which is exactly what we arent.
If we get an invite from a group that is a Special Needs, Severe/Terminal Illness, then that is a different story. But overall I think that we should stick with the events that are considered "Public Appearances"

Doing the Birthday Card is a GREAT idea, Jada, and I think that one of the pictures from the Ukrops Parade with all of us behind the Freedom Base Banner would make an excellent shot. I am sure that Kelly, Thad's GF, would supply us with a high resolution image for such a piece.

Also, Rick, I did get the email and say it went to you as well. I just hadnt had time to address it with you and Danny.

I realized earlier that this wasn't the one I got. I got one for VA and not NC, and I checked to see if I had gotten this one and hadn't. Must've come from the 501st?

Well why did Danny get it? I'm the NC State Captain! Razz Wink

It would be great to get a nice photo with a birthday greeting inside for something like this.

my .02: I agree with Rick. We should not be thought of as hired entertainment as Joel said, and we can't even make a buck on it either!!!!

My wife thinks that birthday parties should not be banned outright, but we should get something out of it like a nice donation to a charity. But that brings up problems of its own. What if only one or two characters show up and the parent feels slighted because they made a $100 donation only to have one generic jedi show up!!

What does our charter say about this???

Also about the picture/birthday card: I'm not sure about this but will a kid be that impressed to get a card with a bunch of costumers dressed up as Star Wars characters? Perhaps we could purchase real photos of the real actors to send to a kid who is having a birthday party and who requests our presence. Not sure if something like this is feasible, but I think they would like to get a real photo of the real actors instead of us!!! One option may be to buy a box of the movie trading cards and perhaps sending the kid one or two of those with a card??

Any thoughts?
