I have a recent question from a member in my area who is interested in building an X-Wing pilot costume. He is also a Mandalorian and a 501st member. He is wanting to incorporate a Mythosaur in the markings on his X-Wing helmet but wants to ensure his costume is approvable. As I wasn't 100% certain this would be considered approvable, I told him I would seek the counsel of the Detachment on this one.

Personally, I would think it would be acceptable. We have seen in Rebels where the Mandalorians did, in-fact, provide assistance to the Rebellion, so as-such, it would stand to reason that a Mando could potentially become an X-Wing pilot. And in true Mandalorian fashion I could certainly imagine they would desire to represent their home-world and culture through markings on their helmet.

Can anyone provide some perspective on this question in a more official capacity so that I can properly assist our prospective member with his build?

Thanks!

Yeah, that should be perfectly fine. It's a canon Star Wars design and it pretty common so I don't see why there would be any problem with it.

Of course, if he's really worried about it, he could always submit the costume without the helmet, and just wear the helmet when he troops. Smile

Thanks for the feedback, Alex. I hadn't even thought of the submission w/o helmet option! I agree that I think it would be approvable, but always a good idea to have options to consider. I like to keep my folks well-educated about this stuff (and myself, too!).

Again, thanks for chiming-in!

Always happy to help. Smile

I can't swear to it, but I'm pretty sure there have been some approved pilots with the skull on their helmet. I think I had approved some when I was still a costume judging. But again, without looking through the list of approved member costumes I can't swear to that.

But anyway, if there is any question about it, then submitting without the helmet avoids the issue completely. But yeah, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't be approved, so long as the helmet looked like it fit in with the Star Wars universe.
