was looking over the write up/CRL that was written up for the Vangaurd and was a tad confused on the gaiters and pouches.
The write up said the gaiters need to have 1 strap at the top.......does that main they can be velcroed or zippered up the back of the calf and then a grey strap at the top?
Now the pouches are pretty vague and says 3 green pouches......does that mean leather or canvas and should I stick with all 3 the same size, get Vietnam ammo pouches, or just 3 pouches no matter what as long as they're green?
I figured possibly canvas since most pouches written up here for troopers are canvas and they'd go along with the olive green web belt. |

The gaiters are constructed similarly to the gaiters that the pilots in ROTJ wear. My husband and I have the Hasbro version of the Rebel Vanguard. Our gaiters are basically a gray fabric tube with a long and narrow strip of fabric tan fabric sewed to the top. The gaiters are stiff because I added fusible interfacing.
There are no approved formal Battlefront 2 Rebel Vanguards yet so I am not sure you else you could ask about the gaiters. There are only two Hasbro Rebel Vanguards, Ralf and me, and one Rebel Vanguard (Star Wars Commander: mobile game), jediknight-87 (Stephen Laquire). There are also three approved informal Rebel Vanguards, Schph Gochi (Phyllis Schulte), Crynyd (Chad Monroe) and Jedi of Poker (Tim {T.J.} Balski). The Rebel Legion stopped approving informal costumes a couple of years ago.
Did you look at the published Rebel Vanguard (Battlefront game 2004) CS? http://newsite.rebellegion.com/rebel-vanguard-battlefront-game-2004/ It states the following about the belt and pouches.
6. Belt:
2″ wide olive webbing belt with an ALICE buckle and three olive green canvas belt pouches.
It specifically states that the 3 green pouches should be canvas belt pouches. You should try to purchase pouches that look similar and are a similar size to the ones worn by the Vanguard in the game. It does not specify the type of pouch, the time period, or the country the pouches should come from. I do not know what Vietnam ammo pouches you want to use but they could work.
Here is pretty much all the information about the Rebel Vanguards that we have here on the forum.

There is no pattern for the vanguard gaiters. They are just a gray fabric tube with an extra strap in the color tan sewed to them.
The height of the gaiter is the length of your shin from the top of your boot to right below your knee or a couple of cm below the knee. Whatever looks best on you. The width of the gaiter is the circumference of your calves at the place they are the thickest. I suggest adding a couple of centimeters so that the gaiters are not too tight and can be slipped on easily.
So for my husband's gaiter, the fabric and the iron-on interfacing had a height of 26.5cm and a width of about 48,5cm. I suggest a seam allowance of about 4cm at the top and bottom because you will have to fold it in twice and then make a seam about 1.5cm from the top and bottom edge to keep it in place. The strap for my husband's gaiter was about 4cm. It will need a seam allowance of about 2cm on all edges. It will be folded under on the top and on the bottom. The upper edge of the strap is about 3.5 to 4.0 cm below the top edge of the gaiter.
Making easy gaiters:
Cut the fabric with the mentioned seam allowances twice. Then cut the fabric and iron-on interfacing twice. Iron on the interfacing on the left side of your fabric. Next, lay your second fabric without the seam allowance on top of the iron-on interfacing. The fold in the top and bottom seam allowance twice and sew it in place. Sew the right and left edges with a zig-zag stitch to keep it from unraveling. Sew the strap in place and then sew the right and left edges of your gaiter together. That is all there is to it.
Making a little more difficult gaiters:
The seam allowance for these gaiters is about 2cm for all edges. First, cut the fabric with the mentioned seam allowances four times. Then cut the iron-on interfacing twice. Iron on the interfacing on the left side on two of your four fabric pieces. Next, lay your second fabric piece on top of the right side of your first fabric piece. Sew the top and bottom edges together. Then turn your fabric tube inside out so that the right sides of the fabric are on the outside and your iron-on interfacing disappears on the inside. Iron the gaiters flat and sew some topstitching about 1.5cm from the top and bottom to keep the fabric from shifting. Sew on the strap next. Last sew the right and left edges with a zig-zag stitch before sewing the side of each gaiter together.
If your ankles are much smaller than your calves the gaiters will have to be more cone-shaped. My gaiter's measurement without the seam allowance where:
Fabric height: about 25cm
Length of the top edge: 59cm
Length of the bottom edge: 42.5cm

for anyone trying to determine how to make a gaiter, thats really good info. My MF gunner gaiters are just a tube that fits my calf, with the seams down the front and the velcro in back along with the tan strip. I put some heavy batting in to help them keep their shape. _________________ Once I was Dewka, but now I'm just G'nott sH'urr

Which part does not look right? We only have so many images to reference, so we work with what we have.
Since you would literally be one of the first, build it the way that you feel is correct, then submit. The judges may be inclined to approve your methodology. _________________ Once I was Dewka, but now I'm just G'nott sH'urr

The photos of gaiters that posted are the ones that I made for my husband's Hasbro Vanguard and mine. They are made to comply with the criteria stated in the published costume standard of the Hasbro Rebel Vanguard. Personally, I would prefer the tan strap to be gray like the rest of the gaiter because that is how it is on the Hasbro Rebel Vanguard toy that I own.

I agree that my self-made gaiters do not look like the ones I see in the two screencaps below. The original Battlefront 2 is an old game with graphics that are not really close to anything in real life. I am not sure how someone would be able to replicate the exact look. If you have good references and think you can pull the look off go for it. As long as you have references for what you create you should be able to get approved with it. The CS can be updated afterward if need be.

I think shadowing seen on the gaiters could be accomplished with spray paint to indicate shadows are there. _________________ Once I was Dewka, but now I'm just G'nott sH'urr

Seeing as I've been slowly working on a Vanguard as well (need a "good guy" to go with my Phase Zero Dark Trooper armor!) this is something that I've been looking at as well. The gaiters seem to be very similar to the A-wing, B-wing and Y-wing pilot gaiters from Return of the Jedi, just without the double fold down the front center, and of course these are gray with a tan strap, and there are no buckles on the sides. They look to be fairly loose, rest at about the top of the foot, and are wrinkled (caused by the looseness and resting on the foot, which creases it when the foot bends). My pilot gaiters are made out of a thin vinyl with a felt backing and the Vanguard gaiters look similarly smooth, though that's likely because of the low quality texture of the graphic skin.
Judging by the shadow cast under the strap, it looks like the strap fits somewhat loosely, like the pilot gaiters do.
One thing that I've been debating is the black area at the top of the gaiters. I don't know what that's supposed to be. It looks to thick and dark for a shadow, but it also doesn't make sense to have that as a piece of material under it. There also appears to be a triangular cut in the front top of the gaiters, which is... odd. Maybe the gaiters do have a triangular cut at the top and maybe the black is just a shadow on the pants? _________________ B-wing Pilot - Jedi - Resistance X-wing Pilot - Temmin "Snap" Wexley
