This unfortunately brings us to the paradox of tolerance: taking a stance of "we don't want to take a stance that alienates ANYONE" looks good on the surface, but is in reality inherently alienating. You cannot be tolerant of both marginalized groups and the people who would deny those groups human rights, because that creates a space that is unwelcoming at best and dangerous at worst. So, in order to create a space that is tolerant, we have to actively make it clear that hate is not welcome here.

The mission of the Rebel Legion is to do good in the world. Supporting human rights is part of that mission. And learning to be better at standing up for human rights starts at home. I am so proud of this community for committing to doing that work. Supporting human rights isn't political unless we decide to make it so.

I recognize that you're new to our community, so you might not be aware of the wonderful and diverse viewpoints of our membership. I hope that you do stick around, and listen to experiences of other folks who have different backgrounds. It might help you to understand why this is important to us. I, for example, live in the Seattle area, and would be happy to share my viewpoint of what is actually happening here in my city, if you would like to PM me.

I am glad to see a dialogue about this - though as in all sensitive topics, it can get heated when emotions are involved.

This absolutely needs to be 100% understood by everyone - no matter what side you fall on:

Black Lives Matter is not a political issue - it is a Human Rights issue. Please try to understand that.

Thank you.

Racism is a spectrum, with varying degrees of unconscious & learned behaviors reinforced by society every day.
It’s not: either you’re racist or you’re not. It’s to what degree are you prejudiced, against whom, and why?

If you have a problem with that statement, you may want to ask yourself why that is. Then go educate yourself, and since we are still in a pandemic, while you're sanitizing, and wiping everything down, be sure to wipe hatred out of your heart. Because that's a virus, too.
