This revision proposal regards the Scarif Marine goggles. So far, all approved applicants have used the 1970's vintage goggles that go under the brand names Cebe 15, Loubsol Quatras, Nesco, Targa, Swans Astroscope, or Texco E-103 ski goggles which are becoming quite rare. We are starting to see costume submissions using more modern goggles.
In consultation with the RAID Detachment CO, our feeling is that the goggles are a prominent part of the costume, and that the screen accurate look should be maintained. The screen-used goggles are uniquely angular and boxy.

As an aside, they were used by the filming crew of The Empire Strikes Back in Norway and may be the reason they were chosen by the Rogue One costume designers.
https://www.therpf.com/forums/threads/latest-find-vintage-loubsol-ski-goggles-finse-film-crew-model.304780/
Following Rebel Legion guidelines, changes to the standards should be discussed publicly on the forums. Can we conveniently maintain that specific level of screen accuracy, or should we allow for substitutes?
I am aware of at least one source for replicas of the goggles and predict that more will become available if membership decides that vintage replicas should be a required element of the costume.
The proposed costume standard revision is a follows (marked in brackets):
Quote: | 1. Headgear:
Variation A
Hoth-style soft cap in coyote brown or blue with replica communication device and tactical goggles. Replica communication device must be proportional to the wearer. Goggles [must be replica style and] may have clear, smoke, or yellow tinted lenses. |

I think we should permit "substitutes" goggles for this costume. The original vintage goggles are rare and very expensive. We also do not have a good source for replica goggles yet. We do not know if the seller on "therpf.com" still makes them. None of us bought goggles from him yet, so we do not know how their quality is. I do not like the idea of giving a seller a monopoly or forcing applicants to either buy a replica of the google or making them wear the helmet. _________________ RIAD GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019-present

I prefer the screen-accurate look as well. They're not just random goggles... they all have that particular look. (The Hoth goggles are a lot more generic looking, so you can get away with modern sources a lot easier)
That said, yeah, there has to be a tested and viable source (more likely at least 2, maybe more), or I don't know what people can do. _________________

I found where someone had ripped the files from EA/DICE Battlefront game, which has the Scarif Marines. I have turned the goggle frames into a 3D print file and offered it on the internet. The strap mounts still could use some work but it's a start.

Great start! I wonder how well these would look printed? Have you tried? _________________

Not yet, but I'm working on it. If someone else beats me to posting pics I'm happy to see their print. _________________ Legion Costume Judge (RAID) 2019- |

Posting a little after the fact, but several people in the Facebook Scarif Rebel Trooper group have been printing the 3D file for the goggles, and it has been turning out nicely. I also have had them printed for myself and they are quite serviceable.
https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4122168
Also found a vendor in Spain who offers resin casts of the goggles which are even more accurate.

Under consultation with the Detachment CO, when two reliable sources for an accurate part are available, we will be requiring the accurate version of that part rather than allowing substitutes.
Sound off with your thoughts! _________________ Legion Costume Judge (RAID) 2019- |

Both goggles look good on photos but I cannot really give an opinion yet. I asked a friend to print the goggles for my husband and me. I hope to see them in person soon. Unfortunately, I do not know someone that has Guillermo googles in person. I might order them myself at a later time. _________________ RIAD GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019-present

Okay i understand the problem with Google.
But whats with the Radio you say use the real looking google but use Hoth Hat Radio ?
There are some Propbuilder who made the correct Scarif Radio too i know one from Argentinia and one from Germany.
I have one original Google here... and the Google from Retro Revival Props is good too... there are just some little things to change.
I will show some Pictures from an Updated Google soon. _________________ Best Regards

Let's please keep this conversation to discussion of the goggles and whether exact replicas of the screen-used goggles should be required or if substitutes should be allowed. Feel free to PM me about any individual builds or have the discussion in their WIP thread.
RetroRevivalProps does indeed offer a Rogue One hat with goggles, but while the soft hat is excellent, the goggles have not been preferred. It's corners are more rounded than the CEBE/Loubsol.

They are probably the closest substitute, but with exact reproductions available this proposal is that we not allow substitutes. It becomes difficult to know where to "draw the line" and what substitutes will be allowed and which will not. If the exact replica is available it is simpler to just go with that.
It also appears that RetroRevivalProps is not offering goggles currently with purchase of their hat.
However, if you disagree and think that substitutes should be allowed, this is the place for your voice to be heard. _________________ Legion Costume Judge (RAID) 2019- |
