Very similar to the ANH Dodonna costume, but the pants are straight-legged and don't have the cavalry stripe. Not sure if we want to get so picky as to say the boots have gaiters as the shaft rather than riding boots, or to allow both. _________________ Legion Costume Judge (RAID) 2019- |

I think with animated the trick is getting the details right, like the wig, makeup and accessories.
Most people that I've seen who have done animated officers have used spats. But I'll ask the boss.
Have you got some more references? So we can see how it looks on screen? _________________ RLGSC, DXO

I have a whole folder full of reference for General Jan Dodonna (Rebels). I collected them when I took a break from writing my term paper. Here is the link. https://imgur.com/a/qmk4MdW I also have a collection of illustrations because have been collecting references from Rebels since Phoenix Squad showed up.
The illustration and his appearance in the cartoon are pretty much the same. He does not wear gaiters. He is wearing brown jackboots. It just the way they are animated. His boots are a similar hight as Gold leader Dutch Vander's jackboots. They are shorter than Commander Jun Sato's riding boots.
There are many differences to the ANH version. He wears brown jackboots instead of riding boots and regular pants instead of jodhpurs. The pants do not have the black strip. You can only see a seem in close-ups. The fly of the pants is rectangular.
The jacket has cuffs and the pockets are flat and do not have gussets. The rank badge is similar to the Rogue One version. There is a center seam on the back of the jacket that does not go all the way up because it is covered by the yoke. The yoke and collar are the same color. When you look closely, you see that the orange-brown of the yoke and collar frames the inside of the jacket.
The belt buckle is rectangular with rounded corners. I do not have a better description for shape of the belt.
There are no yoke edges or visible seams on the shirt.

Great research. As I got looking at the character sheet I wondered if they were mid-calf jackboots rather than knee riding boots. The character sheet for Sato confirms it by comparison.
I had asked about the gaiters because Rebels has an interesting style on how they've done some of the boots on other characters, such as Kallus and the AT-DP pilot; you can see the same style on Gold Leader in the above picture. To me, obviously it is a regular jackboot and I thought it a design artifact to get it to animate well. The 501st interpreted them as being an armored gaiter which rides on a shoe or low boot. With our recent acceptance of Imperial-dressed Kallus as a double-agent I haven't read into whether we've adopted the same standards as the 501st for automatic dual-legion acceptance.
However, I think this concern is moot in Dodonna and Sato's case as their ankles are more streamlined and more directly resemble the stitching of an actual boot. _________________ Legion Costume Judge (RAID) 2019- |

I do not envy our counterparts at the 501st legion. The boots in Rebels are all over the place. It is often very difficult or even impossible to distinguish between regular boots and shin armor. It makes sense for a fully armored or partly armored character such as Agent Kallus or the AT-DP pilot to wear shin armor, but it does not make sense for an unarmored rebel or imperial officer. _________________ RIAD GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019-present
