My husband has been complaining about some costume items of his RFT ANH. He thinks the leather jackboots are uncomfortable and he drops his belt boxes a lot. He is also afraid that he will poke out someone's eye with the antenna. So I decided to make him a Hasbro Rebel Vanguard Trooper costume.

So far I have ordered the toy itself for reference and a plain white sweatshirt with a crewneck for spring and fall events. I am also going to buy a long-sleeved t-shirt with a crewneck for the summer events. The sweatshirt arrived this morning and the toy should be here in the next couple of days.

We are going to re-use his RFT helmet minus the antenna and his RFT vest. He owns a pair of coyote brown pants with cargo pockets from Helikon and black combats boots that we would like to use for this costume. I am going to make the belt myself because I already have some roll pin buckles.

I have been looking at some brown gloves and olive green pouches. These are the ones I like best.

The toy arrived today. I have not taken it out of the package yet. I only paid about 13 Euro (shipping included) for it. I bought it on eBay from a German guy that is selling his Star Wars Toys collection.

I will follow this WIP...Wondering about a finished version of this build...
Do you plan to make the rocket launcher?

We are going for the basic version with the DH-17 blaster, for now, to get it approved when it is finished but we might add the rocket launcher next year. We need to get a little more experience at making weapons and stuff like that first.

Good luck on the build!

I've been thinking of trying my hand at the rocket launcher as well, sometime in the future. Maybe we could collaborate a bit on building them? Might make things easier. I also have a 3D printer (which I just got recently and still need to set up Razz) so I can print parts, too.

For now, aside from a DH-17-- I'm making a conversion kit for a Nerf one, I'll be printing the tonearm pieces, the disc that goes on the grip, and a couple other things for the blaster, and I found some yellow cord for the curled cord-- I got a big Nerf gun that I'm planning to "Star Wars-ify". It wont be canon but it's a huge gun and should look pretty cool for a vanguard. Looks like a shotgun crossed with a bazooka. Laughing

Sure we can collaborate on the bazooka. 3D-printers are pretty cool. Unfortunately, it is very expensive to buy costume items in the USA because of shipping, value-added taxes, and customs fees. One of my friends has a small 3D-printer. He might be able to prints stuff for me if I have some files.

My husband is thinking about painting his Nerf Longshot black as a substitute for a bazooka for now.

As far as I know, no one has been approved with this costume since the standards were redone. My WIP on this has been sitting for years. Definitely following this thread.

As far as I know, there are only three informal Vanguards that were approved before the standard was published.

By the way, there seems to be a mistake in the Hasbro CS.

8. Boots:
Black boots with grey gaiters that cover the shaft of the boot from ankle to mid-calf. Top of gaiter has a tan strap. Boots have laces.
http://newsite.rebellegion.com/rebel-vanguard-hasbro-action-figure/

There is no tan strap on the Hasbro Vanguard's gaiters. The strap is the same grey as the gaiters.

Since I have been having problems sourcing some stuff, I decided to buy two of each of the things I have finally found, so that I can also make a Vanguard for myself. If I go through all that trouble for this costume, I might as well make two of them.

I have some khaki Tru-Spec BDU pants and some coyote Rothco BDU pants that I could use for this costume. My husband has coyote Helikon BDU pants and some khaki one from another company. We will try out the different colors when the costume is mostly done to find out which color is the best. My husband is going to use regular black combat boots and I can either use by black low Magnum boots or my regular black leather combat boots.

He is a photo of my husband's pullover. Mine is still in the laundry because I wore it for an improvised Vanguard last weekend. The olive webbing for bandolier arrived this week. The gloves are still in the mail. I hope to pick up the pouches, the olive webbing belt, and fabric for the holsters at a local Army store next Week.

Our gloves have arrived. I had to cut off some fabric tags with the brand name and also take off the plastic thingy on the strap of my husband's gloves so that he could fit in.

My husband's gloves

Here are our roll pin belt buckles. I soaked them in a vinegar-salt mixture and cleaned them with an old toothbrush a couple of months ago. I was planning to use them for my TLJ X-Wing pilot, but I have lost interest in that costume, so I am using them for our Vanguard troopers instead. I prefer trooper costumes with cargo pants and regular tops over costumes with flight suits. Flight suits are impractical for me. I tried to make a mock-up of a two-piece flight suit and that did not work out so troopers it is.

Yesterday, I bought some pouches, belts and a large bag at a local military shop. I hope that the color difference between the Mil-Tec pouches and the two used British Army pouches are not this visible on the finished costume. I am going to cut the bag apart and use the fabric for the holsters.

The pipe caps for the bandolier greeblies arrived today. The CS states

4. Bandolier:
Olive or tan in color with at least 4 cylindrical greeblies.

so I am going to try to replicate the cylindrical greeblies with the round top and bottom that where used for the ERTs in ROTJ. We still need to buy the pipe itself. I hope my husband will be able to do that this week. Then we will cut it into pieces and paint it. I want to start doing that next weekend after my final exams for this semester are over.

I added the roll pin buckles and the pouches to the belt webbing. I still need to sew the DH-17 holsters out of the olive canvas bag.

My husband had some difficulties with making the greeblies. I bought pipe caps for 32mm pipes and he bought a 32mm pipe, but the caps did not fit into the pipe pieces. He had to use a heat gun and heat up the pipe pieces so that they would fit around the caps. Because of that, I had to adjust the bandoliers by using a 50mm webbing instead of a 40mm webbing for the top layer to hide some dents in the greeblies. Well, there is one good thing about the new bandoliers layout, my husband did not have to paint the greeblies because now only the black caps are visible and none of the grey pipe.

I used black plastic buckles to make the bandoliers size adjustable because we would like to lose some weight and I do not want to have to redo the bandoliers at a later time. The buckles will be on our backs and hidden under the RFT vest. They should also function as a counterweight to greeblies on the front.
