Yes....we share the tricks of the trade and our suppliers with each other. There is a secret handshake, but we don't get to see each other much since we are spread to the four corners of the world. Hopefully CV will help remedy that. I love the Ya Ya Sisterhood.

Hopefully we can still go to CV...one of our creditors decided that our monthly payments weren't enough for them, so they're going to garnish our tax return. Mad We were planning to use the tax return for CV...so hopefully we'll still have enough left. I very much want to go to CV, we had to miss CIV because of the lack of money. Crying or Very sad

Question for everyone who has made their own gauntlets. How did you put in the buttons? And how many? Are they functional or can you get your hand in and out without undoing them? I was thinking of just sewing down the edge of the hole left and putting on buttons for show but not functional. I have made a cheap fabric prototype which I can get on and off without problems and I will probably make the pleather just a touch bigger to account for the extra bulk and tightness, but before I cut I wanted opinions on the buttons because if they are functional then it will have to be cut that much bigger to allow for over lap in that area.
Thoughts? Opinions?

There are about 4-5 functional buttons in the center of the glove. You can see it on this page: http://www.padawansguide.com/corset_makingof.shtml

With as tight as the gauntlets are, I doubt you'd be able to get away with anything other than functional buttons.

Thanks! Functional it will be... One last question - how big should the buttons be? I bought doll buttons b/c they were only a dollar for a set of 3 and I wanted something small but putting them against the pleather they look way too small and get lost. But the next largest size they had looked way too big for my hand...

They look to be about 8-9mm in size. Smaller than a typical shirt button (usually 11mm).

Here's a great button size chart, print it for accurate sizing (not to promote my job or anything lol)...

Thanks Benae! I might be pm'ing you to get some from you - I get a free lesson for my new sewing machine which I'm going to try to get this week so I will check out their supply again - but I don't believe they had any that size.

I took a look at our inventory and we do have leather buttons like that, but the smallest we have is 11.5mm (about 1/2"). They look like they could work, but do look a little large when I hold them up to my wrist for comparison.

This is what mine look like. Working buttons are a necessary evil. The wrist is very fitted and the hand just doesn't fit through without them.

Working on yet a third one of this costume and a special custom version, different color. If all goes well, they both will debut at CV.

Wow, Denise! I've had to put my commissions on hold so I can get some family costumes done. My kids have only ever costumed as Jedi, so at CV they will be Dagobah fatigues Luke (my 5-year old son), Bespin Leia (my 4-year old [only] daughter), and Yoda (my 1-year old son).

I am only helping on these...I won't be doing all the work myself on these since they do take a massive amount of time on the bead work for the choker and tabbard. The skirt, gloves and corset are actually the easy part. My friend will be following the tutelage from here and doing all of her own beading. I look forward to seeing the little "Orange Grove" at CV....here's hoping our schedules work out.
