|
|
|
Hi all! I'm new here and looking forward to building my Endor Rebel Trooper costume using all of the valuable resources on here. One particular question I have before I go too far is:
I've seen plenty of great tutorials/suggestions for weathering/distressing but haven't seen much for non-permanent solutions. Is there something that looks great for dirt/grime but washes out easily?
I'm especially thinking about my brand-new and very comfortable Palladium boots that I wouldn't mind wearing in "real life" but that just wouldn't look right for the costume clean.
I was thinking various shades of fuller's earth since it's commonly used as a stain remover? I'm hoping to do some tests but was just seeing if anybody had come up with anything first. Cheers! |

I used colored chalk as non-permanent dirt on some of my costumes. My jawa gets weathered with yellow or tan chalk before every event. It comes out when I wash the costume.
I also used it on my desert hiking boots for my BF2 Tatooine specialist. I put on a layer of chalk and then rubbed it in with a cloth. I have not washed the boots yet and do not plan on doing it anytime soon so I cannot say if the chalk washes off completely or not. _________________ RIAD GRRRL-Squad-Leader 2019-present

Thanks for the tip, I hadn't thought of that! I was also considering maybe powdered paint? |

Coffee or tea grounds, dirt and grease rubs, model paint washes, there are lots more....WD-40. just make sure not to over-do it and the weathered areas seem reasonable that they would be dirtied on every day duties. _________________ Todd (Toda) - former RAID XO (2017-2019)

Actually the coffee and tea typically comes out after a few washes. Grease doesn't but if the boots are dark it is hard to see. I guess I did misread it though.

The point of this thread was to ask about "Non-permanent" weathering options so the boots could be washed and worn as regular clothing between troops. Not as part of a costume.
Most of what you listed will stain the boots, or at the very least leave a permanent residue.

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe just real dirt is the way to go, I've had pretty good luck getting that out in the past. I just won't go too crazy with it. |

i have weathered my Endor vest four times now. Rubbing it on the car gives it a dirty effect that barely shows up in photos, but the dirt falls right off. I used a cornstalk colored trigger fabric that seems to resist all dirt and most stains.
Its amazing. I cant get it dirty enough! _________________ Once I was Dewka, but now I'm just G'nott sH'urr
