HI, I am researching Major Kalonia's costume. I think the pants and the shirt will be relatively easy to do but it's the tunic vest that has me stumped. I am prepared to learn how to draft this costume piece but it would be faster if I could have a pattern some one has already made and digitised to work with. Can anyone help?

Regards,

Just bought a vintage Butterick 3974 Vest Pattern from the 2000's that has similar style lines for the tunic vest used by Dr. Kalonia. Waiting for it to arrive.

On a quick glance, that looks like a great base! Smile

I have a question about fabrics for the vest and the pants. I live in Australia and have limited sources of fabric to choose from. I know a wholesaler in Sydney who sells Polyester Viscose Garberdine

https://emgreenfield.com/product/polyester-viscose-gaberdine/

Does a judge thinks that this fabric in chocolate and black be suitable for the vest and the pants?

Looking forward to your opinion..

I think gaberdine will be great for the pants, I think it will be a bit lightweight the waistcoat.

The fabric weight for the vest is easy fixed - just interline it to give it more body. I can use either a iron in or a fabric interlining. I will buy some of each and do an experiment to see which method works best.

I mean gaberdine is not quite the right fabric, its more like a linen....or a textured lighter weight wool.

A linen with lining might work? You can see it has a slight texture.

Gaberdine would be an excellent pants fabric, I think the vest you’ll want more texture? Kalonia’s trousers are a very dark brown- like the other senior officers. Her vest has a visible texture to the weave similar to what you see on linen, and is a slightly lighter brown.

Yikes! The standard is incorrect! We’ll accept black or dark brown trousers.

I am collecting all sorts of fabric samples from Sydney Fabric Shops via mail. So far I have shirt fabric samples and have ordered different chocolate coloured fabrics for the vest. The pants will be black garberdine and so I already know where I am buying it from.

However, when all of my white shirtings and chocolate fabric samples arrive I will post them here and I would appreciate your advice on which one[s] that are suitable. I have ordered linens, wools and mixed blends. Thanks for your help, I live in regional Australia and there is really little choice about where to buy fabrics unless I visit Sydney.

Regards,

Just an enquiry about the shirt fabric colour. The standard says off-white which I interpreted as ASH coloured. However, all the fabric samples I have that I thought would be off white colours such as beige and ash have turned out to be very dark! Is the judge looking for a very pale cream? Take a look at the Pantone colour scale swatch below:

https://www.pantone.com/color-finder/11-4302-TCX

Or are we talking about https://www.pantone.com/color-finder/11-1001-TCX

Please comment.

Either of those would be fine.

Hi All,

What do you think of this shirt pattern for Dr. Kalonia?

https://www.folkwear.com/products/202-victorian-shirt?variant=35177852366

Do you think it's worth changing the placket to be hidden? Or leave it as is with less buttons?

Just thought this pattern could be useful as a base to work with.

Thoughts appreciated. :-)

Regards,

The bib is less than ideal, but it could work. Smile Something like this may be easier to use? Just lengthen the cuffs?
