I'm currently deciding weather or not I should do an a wing or y wing pilot, but I'm leaning towards a wing. It really depends what color the cheapest coveralls I can find is. I see a lot of good coveralls for the flightsuit, but how can I find matching cloth to sew on the correct pockets?

Also, I'm camera shy, so I'll be doing some kind of alien pilot. Am I allowed to have a custom helmet in that case, such as this picture?

At this time a helmet is not required but if you do an alien pilot the helmet would have to be one that will work with that alien.

In this case there is a set Mon Callamari helmet design you would want to have.

Although action figures, references are not valid for the costumes of the legions, the best reference, Mon Calamari helmet is this

Ok thanks. And for the flightsuit, I didn't think of this until now, but I could always get 2 cheap coveralls and use one to cut up for the pockets and the other for wearing. That way I wouldn't have mismatched cloth.

That's what most people do, buy two pair of coveralls and use one for pockets. Just make sure that you buy both of them at the same time and in the same size or else you might get them from a different dye batch which means that the color could still be slightly different.

And as was already stated, a helmet isn't required for a pilot costume, but if you wanted to wear one it would need to fit the head. A standard A-wing helmet could work for many near-human aliens-- Chiss, Pantoran, Zabrak, Rodian and so on-- but for an alien with a less human-like head the helmet would need to fit the head and you'd need to provide a canon reference for that particular helmet. If I remember right, the Mon Calamari pilot has on the helmet that the Mon Calamari officers wear on the Home One. I seem to remember reading that in the Costumes book. A helmet like that would be acceptable. But as that's the only alien-head-shaped A-wing pilot helmet from a canon source you might have a hard time getting a helmet for a different type of alien accepted. Unless you don't submit the helmet for approval and just wear it during troops.

Just a word of warning: the new CRL is going into effect, and will require you to have the proper medium green color, not the spruce green of the commonly-available coveralls out there. If you convert, you may have to go with a white and dye it.
