This video contains every frame of every RAID costume as seen in ANH. This is from an up-rezzed, Theatrical version for the purest of frame selections, though it suffers on fine details for lack of blu-ray source footage. Should I ever gain the ability and materials to edit a blu-ray version of this, I will. Watch the current video at its best in 720p.

Thank you one and all! As I research my Yavin tech and eventual fleet trooper, I wanted to conduct and share this basic research.

The following has been edited to remove the Communication Officer as that is a different detachment.

I wish I had this ready for the CRL revision last year as it shows a number of interesting findings that pop out immediately. Most immediate and important to me is that there appear to be three categories of Yavin Tech, of which the CRL only covers one.

I would classify the three categories of Tech as:
Ground Crew, Flight Crew and Tactical.

1. Ground Crew are essentially the current CRL.

2. Flight Crew, same as the Ground Crew, but no helmets and some with arm tool/code cylinders.

3. Tactical, same as Flight Crew, but with Racal headsets.

Ground crew wearing helmets are only seen driving the transport pods and waving the launch batons as the x-wings leave. All other personal in every frame of every shot are Flight Techs attending the vehicles and wear not one helmet between them. They are the vast majority. Some wear arm tool/code cylinders, some do not.

The Throne room was shot before the hangar bay* and that scene suggests they had plenty of helmets to go around for the hangar shoot, but for whatever reason, a differentiation was made between the two groups of personnel and some have helmets and most do not.

The Tactical guys in the command center are the same as the Flight crew but wear headsets. Some Tactical guys are walking around in the BG, but also standing at the glowing window things, but most are sitting at consoles.

Its clear you put a lot of effort and research into this. That is what we like to see!!!

When I redid the Standard last year we tried to standardize it as much as possible...too many options for a costume gets difficult for judges when you have half of this and half of that. I wear mine with the helmet and starter cartridges ( i refuse to call them flares) because it gives me a little shade.

Also the comm guys belong to the Commanders detachment. Im working on one of the tan comm techs so I can join that Det.

I can certainly understand the need to keep things simple for the LCJ's. With that in mind, this is my humble submission to streamline the CRL for the next revision which creates the three separate personnel as seen in the film.

REQUIRED ITEMS
1. Flightsuit: Light tan or light gray coverall with mandarin-style collar and pointed tab, rectangular pocket with a flap closure on upper right arm, 2 hip pockets and 4 leg pockets. Black velcro is used on the neck and arm cuffs as well as the pockets. No visible zippers or snaps are allowed. This is the same flightsuit pattern as the ANH Pilots wear and pockets should be the same. Pants can be hemmed or cuffed.

2. Belt: dark khaki, khaki green, British Khaki, Olive, Olive drab or dark tan with a roll pin buckle. Belt should have mini-flare loops that can be empty or contain up to a full set of 12 mini-flares.

3. Boots/shoes: Black boots or black shoes with rounded toe and smooth finish. Black socks must be worn with the shoes.

OPTIONAL ITEMS:
Note: Optional items are exclusive to each other. None may be combined with the other at the same time.

1. Arm Tools/Code cylinders. From one to three may be worn on the left arm per the ANH pilots.

2. Helmet: Accurate tech helmet (RFT helmet with no swoop on back) Helmet can be white or light gray and can have either a white/light gray or black com box. It may or may not have an Antenna on the comm box.

3. Headset: Original was a Racal brand... add description, etc...

Interestingly, that entire front row of RFT's in the Throne Room are wearing pilot leg flares.

Yep. The throne room is literally a mishmash of thrown together odds and ends. When the standard was revised it reflected the leg flares and the "ball caps" as options. TkvanB built a new rft from scratch with both types of caps. Her build is further down the forum.

From all published descriptions, the Throne Room was a mad scramble to get an additional 200-300 people into wardrobe in about a week's time. Notice that NONE of the pilots are wearing boots! I believe that all the boots went to the troopers in the foreground. The Tantivie boarding sequence was the last of regular filming. GL had to go back to 20th for more money to build the corridors, as redressing the Falcon sets just wasn't going to work out.

Be careful when ordering Gray BDU pants, as each manufacturer has their own definition of "Gray"

Both pairs were ordered within one week of each other (mid December 2016). The Rothco is an acceptable color, the Propper is too dark.

Hey Tom! I enjoyed your research and I agree that there should be different types, I was just recently approved with a variant on the tech, I called this one "Ground Crew" to differentiate it from the existing Tech standard and include the belt being optional and tucked and untucked pant legs.

I considered the name Flight Crew for it but it appears that the definition of flight crew is more "the personnel responsible for the operation of an aircraft during flight."

I put forth a proposed standard with my costume submission as well as screen shots.
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=85823

I plan on submitting a tech once I finish my helmet and belt, and I also have a racal headset for the other version.

I will be up front about the fact that personally
I don't see removing a helmet as a new costume...
as a judge, I felt a little "forced" to accept and approve as "new costumes"...

IMHO...as MacBragg already stated...
Just like the Celebration Scene at the end of ANH was a last minute and thrown together scene, some elements of that scene were taken at face value and not written into any standards.

For example, in the Celebration Scene photo...the X-Wing Pilots are NOT wearing boots...they are wearing street shoes...

or..
if you look closely, some of the RFT's are wearing the Pilots leg flare holder/leg flares.

Clearly...these were just a matter of filling the screen with bodies in some kind of costume and I am sure that no one at the time of ANH would have even thought that 40 years later people would be combing through these photos/screen captures.

These aberrations in some of these scenes were seen as just that
and not even considered as a "new" costume...
you will not see a "Celebration Scene Pilot" that has street shoes...
and we did not write "leg flare holders" into the RFT standard....
there was a lot of complaining about the requirement to have a RFT helmet and there were people who brought up the Celebration Scene again that showed some of the RFTs with the tan/cream long billed hat....

after months/years of arguing, that "Celebration Scene Trooper" Standard was added...but...to be honest...VERY few of them were ever made (after all of the discussion and argument) because...
well...
who in the general fandom even recognizes that RFT with a hat? Did anyone see RFTs with a hat in Rogue One?

Most members do go for the standard RFT helmet for the sake of being recognized in public...

Again...I don't see removing a helmet or adding a headset to an already established costume as being a new costume...
I am guessing that we should have wrote ONE standard for the Yavin "Tech" and added the other things as "optional".

just my 2 credits...

as a matter of fact...
I have 2 Yavin Tech costumes...
one in gray and one in tan because at the time, no one could decide what color they were
does that mean I should submit two new costumes by just removing a helmet from each of them and
then submit two more with a headset?
Laughing
