I have been researching rebel pilots for a couple of weeks. After watching some Rebels episodes today I have finally desided which pilot I want to make. It's going to be the red female A-Wing pilot. She has a many features that I like. Unfortunately, the Y-Wing helmet she wears doesn't look like the ones used in ROTJ so I will have to make one myself. I probably going to use a cheap and simple open face motorcycle as a base for it.

If you are considering the standard version helmet.. Richie's Armor made a Y wing helmet that was very elongated looking like the helmets seen in Rebels.
Although I don't know if the pilot LCJ's still accept it.

I've found the Richie's Armor homepage during my research. I didn't consider it as a base for the rebels version because it would cost me a lot of money to buy it and get it shipped to Germany. After that I would have to fill the large round indention on the left side because it is only drawn on the helmet in rebels. Then cut a a large long hole for the indention in the back and a smaller one on the right side of the jaw due to the fact that the helmet is symmetrical in rebels. I think I rather buy a cheap motorcycle helmet and then work with different materials (EVA foam, sintra, worbla) to make it into a rebels Y-Wing helmet. They helmet would be optional anyway due to the fact that a red female A-Wing pilot can be seen watching Mon Mothma's speech (s3e18) without her Y-Wing helmet. Instead she is wearing a soft flight helmet.

Good luck on the costume. The Rebels pilot suits are certainly interesting ones.

For the helmet, perhaps Pepakura might be useful? If nothing else you could probably get a standard Y-wing pilot helmet model and then modify it as you build it.

As the helmet is optional in every pilot standard we have, I'm quite sure it will be optional for the Rebels version as well. So you could just use the soft helmet when striving for approval...

At first I thought about the pepakura route. I have a free Y-Wing file that was made by Dungbeetle but it's too small and I'm having a difficult time resizing it. I also found one made by Fierfek that I could purchase for 35 USD. I'm a little reluctant to invest the money due the fact that my two mandalorian helmets didn't survive the epoxy and fiberglass stage. For some reason they never dried and I had to throw them in the trash. I was luckier when I made them out of a bicycle helmet, a plastic bucket and a worbla reinforcement.

I'm probably going to sew a soft helmet for approval and then build the helmet at a later time. I found an AN-H-15 pattern in the endor trooper section and another one on the RPF-forum that I will try to modify. I'm a little worried about the domes one the ears. I haven't figured out way to do them yet.

I'm not sure how to do the gloves and boots. I can't see any seams on the gloves in the drawing or the screen caps. That is impossible to do in reality. I have a pair of black leather gauntlet gloves, that I'm planing to use for my TIE-pilot reserve, but they have seams on the side of the fingers and on the sides of the part that goes over my forearms. The seams on the boots are also strange. I thought of using my RFT jackboots but they have different seams and I had leather added in the back for my large claves. I don't like the idea of using black leather chelsea boots and making a black pleather gaiter for on top but if push comes to shove I'll do it. Sad

I have analyzed the boots and the flight suit. The boots have no seams besides the ones around the ankle and were the sole meets the bottom of the boot. There is no way to do that in reality. Even gaiters would at least have one seam on the inside.

The flight suit is very similar to the X-Wing flight suit from the original trilogy. It has one cargo pocket or a padded pocket on each upper arm. The collar is a mandarin-style collar with pointed tab closure. It closes from left to right with the exposed tab on the right side of the throat. The closure of the flight suit is hidden. Similar to the X-Wing flight suit, it also has large chest pockets that are covered by the flakvest. It also has the seams that go from one side of the chest to the other and has seams that go from the chest seam to the waist seam, which are hidden by the belt. Like the X-wing flight suit it has pockets the hip and the thigh of each leg. The lower pockets above the boots are missing instead there is a knee reinforcement. There are also not flaps on any of the pockets. The biggest differences are on the back. There is one seam down the back but there isn’t one on the back of the collar. There is a double seam that goes from armhole to armhole in the shoulder area. There is also a double seam on the bottom. It seems to be some kind of reinforcement. There is a back pocket on each side of the bottom.

The last couple of days I made some mock-ups of the different soft flight helmet patterns. I used an old bed sheet my grandma gave me. The endor trooper soft helmet pattern was too large so I made a smaller version. Now it is almost too small for me. My head is about one inch smaller than the large Styrofoam head and half an inch larger than the small one. The pattern looks real good. Unfortunately, it won’t work for the rebels A-Wing pilot. Next I made a flight helmet from the AN-H-15 pattern that I found on the rpf forum. The original was too small and there were strange creases on top. When I made a larger version I used the center pieces of the other pattern. That worked a lot better. After pinning the flaps up and putting some ear phone cushions on, it almost looks like the rebels version. Now I have to figure out how to make the pleats for the top and the dome shaped ear pieces.

Is this from the new season? I haven't caught up yet. The one thing I did notice is that her helmet design is rather similar to my own!

It is from season two and three. I can't remember seeing the girls from phoenix squadron in the new season yet. I can only recall seeing Wedge Antilles, wearing a red A-Wing flight suit, and the green male A-Wing pilot from phoenix squadron in season 4 Episode 3.

I can't wait to watch the new episode. I saw the preview. Hera was wearing a red A-Wing flight suit and her twi'lek A-wing helmet with a cool paint job. Rebel Assault is a very interesting title for the episode. It sounds like a nod to the two Rebel Assault computer games, which I used to play as a teenager. They were good but I preferred X-Wing collector edition and TIE-Fighter collector edition.

I've been working on some prototypes for the soft helmet. The first version is the one on the smaller head. I made the mistake to sew the cap first and then sew the pleats on top. Due to that it shrunk and has the strange creases on the edge. When I made the second version first I calculated the necessary length of fabric and then sewed the pleats. After that I sewed the side parts to the center part. It is better now but far from the result I want. I also made my first attempt at creating my own ear domes. That didn't work out at all. I have to come up with a better idea.

Which version of the cap are you going for? The one with the brown ear "doughnuts" or the thick rounded mounds? For the latter, why not just stuff the mounds? Cut a circle of material, stuff it, and sew it onto the cap.
