Greetings,

I am starting a Work-In-Progress for Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn.
Hopefully I will be able to receive advice and guidance while assisting fellow members who want to follow the same path.

I would currently consider myself a padawan learner; I have only joined within the month.
I have been sifting through threads on the Rebel Legion Forum for a couple of weeks now and I believe I have enough to formally create a list. This first post will be a cantina of information ( I will insert links to everything I reference ).

I will order the material according to the Rebel Legion Qui-Gon Jinn Costume Standards:
http://newsite.rebellegion.com/qui-gon-jinn/

Outer Tunic

Here is the greatest tutorial, by EeanLedgor:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29112&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

I found the professionally dyed silk on Clothears:
http://www.clothearscostumes.com/portfolio/qui-gon-jinn-tunic-fabric/

Granted, I did find the material on Clothears, however, it is rather expensive.
Has anyone found any substitutes? I could spend my whole budget on just the cloth from them.

Inner Tunic

The same tutorial by EeanLedgor details the Inner Tunic:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29112&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0
The collar needs to be loosened for Qui-Gon Jinn's liking.

Again, the professionally dyed silk can be found on Clothears:
http://www.clothearscostumes.com/portfolio/qui-gon-jinn-under-tunic-fabric/

The Inner Tunic fabric is even more expensive than the Outer Tunic fabric.
They even recommend double layering which will bring it close to the price of a Nubian.
Similarily, I will take any advice for a cheaper option (however, I do not trust my dying fabric skills).

Tabards

EeanLedgor's tutorial still holds for the Tabards:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29112&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

The fabric used will be the same as the Outer Tunic:
http://www.clothearscostumes.com/portfolio/qui-gon-jinn-tunic-fabric/

Obi

Finally we have exhausted the tutorial:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29112&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

And, like the Tabards, the Obi uses the Outer Tunic Fabric:
http://www.clothearscostumes.com/portfolio/qui-gon-jinn-tunic-fabric/

Pants

Somewhere deep in my research, it was recommended to choose the Dickies Model 874:
http://www.dickies.com/pants/original-874-work-pant/874.html

I understand that this part of the attire is the most lenient.
I have also read the idea of wrap pants. Any ideas from experience would be much appreciated.

Belt

If you are content with your leather work skills, here is EeanLedgor's Jedi Belt Tutorial:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=48452

However, I am not content with my skills so I have chosen the best option other than custom work:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=70945

Thanatos makes some stellar belts. Does anybody else agree they could work for a Qui-Gon Jinn belt?
I realize Thanatos does not have the correct buckle - that can be found by our returning supplier Clothears:
http://www.clothearscostumes.com/portfolio/qui-gon-jinn-belt-buckle/

Covertec Clip

I have not yet looked into this contact (It is off of the Parts of Star Wars Website), but this is the best price by far:
http://www.partsofsw.com/Ep_1/cvrorder.htm

Another option is again Clothears (Man, they seem to have everything):
http://www.clothearscostumes.com/portfolio/covertec-clip/

Lightsaber Hilt

The hands-down best source for the Qui-Gon Jinn lightsaber (deep groves and all) is KR Sabers:
https://www.facebook.com/krsabers/photos/a.718827238295755.1073741887.304766909701792/718827258295753/?type=3&theater

I know it will be expensive, but I have been informed it will be worth it. The only problem is: actually finding one for sale (KR Sabers only does limited runs).

Pouches

The costume standards only requires "Two movie accurate tall ribbed belt pouches," however, it is clear to me that Qui-Gon Jinn has three belt pouches: a breather pouch, a communicator pouch, and a medical pouch.

Civilized Galactic Gear is the best combination of fully-functional and movie accurate design:
http://shop.civilizedgalacticgear.com/Individual-Pouches_c4.htm

I understand that some may be picky on the pouches. If anyone has any better recommendations on pouches, I will gladly accept them.

12 Food Capsules

The actual Staedtler 415 Liquid Roller Pens are proving to be harder and harder to find nowadays.
The 416 model actually has an identical (or very close) cap design. Unlucky for us, the 416 is still difficult to find.
The 416s on eBay are dishearteningly pricey:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/STAEDTLER-Liquid-Point-5-Pens-Rollerball-416-Colours-Red-Blue-Green-Black-/122374130192?var=&hash=item1c7e110a10:m:mio7N3OnvW8iIu9xijspWfQ

To complete the capsule, you will also require these plastic hemispheres:
https://plastruct.com/shop/tubing-fittings/95842-vhh-14/

You will also need some silver paint.

What I plan to do (since it is cheaper and still reliable) is order pre-made Food Capsules on eBay and paint them all silver:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jedi-Food-Energy-Capsules-Pellets-set-of-8-star-wars-accessories-props-/141754721318?hash=item21013d6426:g:gTsAAOSwgQ9ViRCZ

Boots

I have decided to purchase a pair rather than modify some old WWII boots myself.
From what I understand, JDos does a great job:
https://www.facebook.com/JDOSprops/photos/a.101718193208620.834.101155519931554/122766877770418/?type=3&theater

MotorCowboy tends to be the best production-wise, but they tend to run quite expensive and the boot only has seven straps (Qui-Gon Jinn has eight):
http://motorcowboy.com/products/star-wars-qui-gon-jinn-boots.html

Hair

I have been lucky to be graced with adequate hair for the role and will not need hair prosthetics.
I think Qui-Gon Jinn's half ponytail is held up by a small strap of leather, but I could be wrong.

Robe

EeanLedgor has offered another perfect tutorial:
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36267

The fabric used by many is dark brown wool crepe.
I located some on Fashion-Fabrics, but there are probably many options:
http://www.fashionfabricsclub.com/c85_wool-crepe-fabric?pageSize=15&refinementIds=4096677

I am not confident on the exact shade of brown needed.

Poncho

I have not spent time researching the poncho.
While I do enjoy the look of it, I would rather focus on the Jedi Robe first.
As much as I can say is that it looks like a heavy wool.
Has anybody produced one that could help me out?

Aqua Breather

I realize that the A99 Aqua Breather is not remotely close to be needed, but I thought it would be really cool to pull out on a troop.

Nocturne Armory was selling some at a time, but that was a long time ago:
https://www.facebook.com/121826401221221/photos/a.123368414400353.21196.121826401221221/123955204341674/?type=3&theater

Do you think the aqua breather will fit in the designated breather pouch from Civilized Galactic Gear?

Also, while on the topic of extra accessories, does anybody know any suppliers or tutorials for Jedi Commlinks or Holoprojectors?
____

That pretty much concludes what I am working with.
I wanted to get the community's input before I started purchasing and putting together the costume.

It might sound like I know what I am doing, but, I assure you, that is not true.
Feel free to dispute any ideas I have come across and offer any advice you have.

I still am not sure how to approach sewing for the first time (I plan on procuring some old bedsheets first).
I have read that people line their tunics, but I have not seen anything specific and I could use the assistance.

I am patient so this WIP will take as long as it needs to.
Thank you for any help.

May the force be with you,

Shaman of the Whills

Roger's tutorial is VERY obi-wan specific. (episode 3).

he states explicitly that he is making an "obi-wan" costume (which can double as 'generic jedi').

qui-gon's tunic does not have a pronounced 'skirt' like obi-wan; the inner tunic is completely different; he has no shoulder tucks; etc.

I believe it is a mistake, to base ALL jedi costumes, on Roger's most-excellent "Obi-wan III" tutorial.

it is a wonderful tutorial.. but the end-result is wrong for qui-gon and many other jedi.
it is technically only "correct" for Obi-wan III (and "generic clones" of obi-wan III)

also, judges no longer accept ANY tabbards which 'flare' at the shoulders like Roger's tutorial -- not even for generic jedi anymore.

tabbards should just be long rectangles (with an angle under the belt) -- of same width, all the way down, from shoulder-to-hem.

Leroni's tutorial for 'tabbards the easy way' is MUCH better.
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75075

-====-

civilized galactic gear make wonderful leather pouches which are fully functional and copy the 'look' of the screen-used resin pouches.

but they are not screen accurate by any means.

your best option for screen-accurate resin pouches, is "woodman"
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=74250

he also makes tunic sets (in various styles -- not just obi-wan III).
http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53052

-====-

the food capsules youve found on Ebay are 100% screen accurate, made from the correct pen caps.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jedi-Food-Energy-Capsules-Pellets-set-of-8-star-wars-accessories-props-/141754721318?epid=1847108076&hash=item21013d6426:g:gTsAAOSwgQ9ViRCZ
I have 6 sets of these, and will most likely order more. this is your best option for food capsules.

-=====-

covertex clips are literally everywhere. the best price is probably @ the custom saber shop(?)

http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Covertec-Clip-P117.aspx

-====-

given the options for robe color on that site, I would say "walnut" or "chestnut".

qui-gon's robe is a very dark brown, compared to obi-wan's reddish brown.

ask the vendor to send you 'swatches' , and compare to the reference-images on THIS site:

https://starwarsscreencaps.com/star-wars-episode-i-the-phantom-menace-1999/

(this is your single-BEST resource for images of qui-gon .. or indeed .. for images of ANY "face character" from ALL of the nine feature films)

https://starwarsscreencaps.com/

((example : this photo reveals the color of the robe ))

Qui-Gon's pouches are the "wide" and the two "tall, thin" are both the same size.

I bought my belt buckle from them.

I made my shirt, tabards and obi from raw silk noil from Dharma Trading Company. I machine washed and dried the fabric several times before cutting it. With each run through, it tightens up and gets more nubbly and soft. Great texture for this costume. After the pieces were sewn, I dyed them separately in slightly different shades of beige so that the various layers stand out from one another.

For the undershirt, I found a ribbed fabric that worked well.

A couple pics of me with my apprentice at Celebration Orlando 2017.

I just received my first pieces in the mail.

First, the Covertec Lightsaber Clip from The Custom Saber Shop:

http://www.thecustomsabershop.com/Covertec-Clip-P117.aspx

And second, two sets of Jedi Food Capsules from eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jedi-Food-Energy-Capsules-Pellets-set-of-8-star-wars-accessories-props-/141754721318?hash=item21013d6426:g:gTsAAOSwgQ9ViRCZ

I will soon paint twelve of the capsules silver.

Thus starts the path to a Jedi Knight...

Two questions regarding costume standards:

1. The costume standards require shoulder tucks for Qui-Gon Jinn's outer tunic, but I have not been able to find any pictures showing them.
Are the standards wrong or are the shoulder tucks just covered and I should still make them?

For example:

2. I know many Jedi have their sleeve go all the way to their knuckles, but I it looks like Qui-Gon's stops near the wrist.
The standards do not mention the length.
Is there a recommended length?

For example:

If a LCJ is reading this, I would appreciate your advice especially.

First rule: Make it look like the pictures. Smile The standards are basically a written description of what is seen in the pictures and yes, sometimes things are mistaken and written down wrongly or simply missed.

While I have not posted in several months, I have been busy.

I painted the food capsules I received previously all gray:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Jedi-Food-Energy-Capsules-Pellets-set-of-8-star-wars-accessories-props-/141754721318?epid=1847108076&hash=item21013d6426:g:gTsAAOSwgQ9ViRCZ

I received the Qui-Gon boots I ordered many months ago from JDos:

https://www.facebook.com/JDOSprops/?hc_ref=ARSg59jWSU3354CrwvWhxhHLtc1RmvT5p5ew6A5Ntc8-pd44FgTuTTzYukaYzbkaL-A&fref=nf

While they took a long time to arrive, the craftsmanship well made up for it.

I received several pieces of the costume from Woodman - namely, the tunics, belt, and belt pouches.

http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53052&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=74250&highlight=woodman

It should go without saying, but I highly recommend doing business with Woodman.

I am not far off from completing the ensemble.

I still have yet to acquire a nice pair of Qui-Gon pants.
I have been looking at this pair of Docker's:

https://www.dockers.com/US/en_US/clothing/men/pants/workday-khaki-with-smart-360-flex-slim-tapered-fit/p/362720003

And I have yet to find someone who could produce a robe for me, but I will continue searching - any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Anyway, I just wanted to update anyone following along.

Wow, I certainly have not been on here in a long, long time... a long time...

Thank you, oribit, for your interest.

While I don't consider that I have fully completed my Qui-Gon project (mostly because I have yet to apply for membership), I did acquire two more things which nearly complete the entire costume:

First, I did purchase the Dark Olive Dockers pants mentioned in my previous post:

https://www.dockers.com/US/en_US/clothing/men/pants/workday-khaki-pants-with-smart-360-flex-slim-tapered-fit/p/362720003

While the color might be a little off with my camera, I can assure you that they are the perfect color for Qui Gon (They could probably use a little ironing on my part though).

A possible setback however: It looks like the pants are currently sold out on Dockers website, but I am sure you can find them elsewhere if you use the exact information.

Second, while, if I remember correctly, is not necessary for approval, I had Qui-Gon's outer robe custom made for me:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/567436231/wool-crepe-prequel-style-robe-self-lined

I worked with a great costumer with theEmpiresNewClothes on Etsy.
Of course, you can also find her here on rebel legion:

http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=92804&highlight=

A truly phenomenal robe - equipped even with hidden pockets for your lightsaber blades.

And, if you do follow that link, you'll notice that she will also make the full tunic set for you - dyed even to mimic the sweat under the Tatooine suns.

I recommend messaging her early as possible, because she is highly sought after artisan and thus I had to wait in line.

After that, though, I think that's all I've got that's new.
Maybe I should finally apply for approval.

Well, if anyone has any questions, feel free to reply at anytime.

I'll post a picture of the full accumulated costume in the next day or so.
