Hi everyone !
Searching for something else I've been quite surprised to find this recent 3D model free online ! The senate guard ep3 helmet.

https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2325640

Come already cut to print in 18 segments

Looks quite good to me in first approach ( would need a deeper look).
What do you think of it ? Smile

How strange. I just saw that same file this weekend and was like 'Hey! Need to show that to the guards and get opinions!'
If it pass muster (or can easily do so with a few modifications) then I know some potential future guards that needs to see it. Smile

Awesome find! Comparing to the reference photos I have, it looks like the proportions and shape is good. The real key would be to see how it sits on the head and shoulders, but it looks promising to me.

This would be an excellent resource to have.

True, how it sits on the head and should is very important.

As they helmets do vary in size and shape, do you have some images of which one this is based on to compare?

It looks reasonably similar to these:

The height under the visor might be a little narrow, but again that depends on who is wearing it so things line up well for them.

Well just given the crest it is clearly meant to be an ep3 helmet. However it could be that the visor is more similar to ep1. Anyway the difference is so thin that...
Only "problems" I can see for real (height seems good to me) is the curve to go to the shoulders. It is in my opinion smoother in the real helmet than the model.
The second one for me is that the "indented out" parts both the central one covering the nose, and the cheeks, are a bit too much indented to my taste Wink
The nose if OK, but for me the cheek are not indented out, there is just a recess line. I think your last picture show it well Smile

But ultimately, I don't think this is a problem. The helmet looks still great and would be I think perfect for approval. At least if I was judge, I would approve it Razz

BTW if you download the model, you have in the "file" directory a pdf with some measurements Wink

As an update, I opened the model in my usual software, after 30minutes or so it showed it finally ^^ Quite heavy model then you will understand. But really beautiful. The model is very very smooth. Really beautiful to see.

I can say already then that no way I modify this model without asking too much ressources to my computer. However, if we want to make some chances and control the model to modify it easily, this model will be awesome to save me a lot of time of modeling as I can save time on all the measurements part getting the second model just next to the one I will do Smile

Agreed, it is nice and smooth but the mesh is very dense so editing would be difficult to do without roughing it up.

Do you agree the cheek circle should not be out but just separated by a recess line ?

From what I've seen and on my helmet indicates it is a slight raised surface, though less and more subtle than in this model.

Well, it appears we are both wrong. At least for ep1 version.

Pics from power of costume exhibitions. Thanks to Darkstar Photography on Facebook (And SongOfAmazon for sharing that Razz).

We can see that in facts :
- on front part, the "cheek" piece is not same level that the forehead.
- On side they are
- The "line" separating both is in fact not a simple line. It start on forehead really thin and get larger as it goes to the back, even separating in 2 lines.
Could be also that it is in facts this double line too on forehead but as the cheek piece rise a bit, it merges with the double line and suppress one.
- So the cheek piece is not just an offset of the main shape, nor a continuity, but a part of it regaled with a slight angle to get this effect.
- Nose plate is not align with the cheeks but in front of 1cm.
- We have confirmation the black stuff is horse hair. Which means they had to put hairgel in it ro something like that in order to get it staying up like we see in the movies !

This is my feeling. What's your given those 2 beautiful pics ? (specially the side one, very precious !!!!)

Interesting details on the episode one helmet. Smile

I've not seen any dedications that detail is the same on the ROTS (the helmet being printed here) version though.

You will find that even more interesting then...
Website of the exhibition is giving preview of the costumes with good resolution shots.
http://www.powerofcostume.si.edu/senateGuard.html

And ohhhh it's not the same helmet ! Razz

So two helmets for ep1 ? Or would the one from the exhibit with 2 lines be form ep2 which would be slightly different ? (and then they made mistake saying ep1 in the exhibit, but that would not be the first time)>

Because I now have certitude ep1 is only one line too. I found this interesting featurette from the blu rays
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oztvywHsBSo

And for ep3

Hard to say, sometimes the pieces in show don't match the movie, which is odd but has happened before.

That's a great little featurette though. Some nice images of the design.
