I have been meaning to post this for some time now and a recent Endor costume application reminded me that this information needs to get to those who might be currently building an Endor Trooper and are considering the duster option rather than the capped sleeved vest or camo painted hoodie.

Please look at this photo of one of the actual "dusters" from Return of the Jedi.

This photo was scanned from the "Costumes of the Original Trilogy" book.

The one thing you will note is that the duster is floor length and not the "lab coat" that most have used as the duster in the past.

Note also the detail in the back..

So, if you are contemplating doing a duster version...you might want to google "butcher's coat" as they are generally floor length...

like this one
http://www.justlabcoats.com/ProductShopping.aspx?scode=RE-4004

The coat would have to have the snaps removed for sure....there are no snaps of buttons on the front of the duster.

You would also have to dye the coat tan first before applying camo paint.

Also...

AVOID BUTCHER'S COATS THAT ARE 100% POLYESTER!!!

I can't emphasize that enough!!

100% polyester fabric does NOT dye well using most dyes....
also...
the Design Master camo paint that we use does not adhere well either...
so..
get cotton or a cotton poly blend.

I hope this helps...

I assume we would also need to have the split added down the back of the coat as well?

At this time, I would say no....

The standard will need to go through a clarification first...
obviously...
any clarification of a standard would NOT affect already approved costumes.

im very happy to report that one of our local ladies made her own duster from scratch per the images I sent her (these from the book). She taught me how to make the box pockets I have always tried and failed to do right, and has the split with the tab in the back.

Just curious .... I have my eye on a lab-style coat that is long, but only goes down to mid-calf. I could add extra fabric to the bottom (along with the back slit) and with the cammo I was thinking the extra seam might not be too noticeable. Does that sound OK?

Also, it has plain square pockets in front and in-seam pockets on the side. Are those OK?

I have to ask ...... the duster shown in the first post in the 'What you need to know' thread is only mid-calf length. Should this photo been changed now?

we do still accept the shorter version but prefer to see the longer ones.

As infos, BigFatCat found a really nice place to buy custom lab coats (minimum order = 2) foot length, he order 2 to see how they look. He could say more that me on that Wink

On my side I found this pattern, https://mccallpattern.mccall.com/m7374
Which is quite good and close to what we should get. You just need to move the 2 seems in the back to the sides, but that is not something too complicated.

Also in both case, the pouches would need to be added.

Yes, I've taken a gamble and ordered a pair big enough to fit a wookie. Or thereabouts. They're custom made to floor length in pure cotton, with no fastenings on the front. They'll put big front pockets on so these could need replacing with box pockets if you had to.

What's the state of the split up the back, this is still a required mod, with the little tab over it?
