Hi everyone,

I've been away from the costuming world for too long and finally want to get back into it with this costume, which I've wanted to do for years.

A friend has directed me here as I'm quite unsure where to start to be honest! I've found some material so I suppose that's a good starting point!

I wondered how tough the standards are on the colour of the velvet? There are so many images and the colour looks different in almost every one!

YAY BATTLE HANDMAIDEN!!!!

This is seriously one of my favourite costumes I own, so YESSS, I get really excited when I see people working on it.

In terms of color, I think anything in the burgundy range should work. When Rachel, Jenna and I made ours, we went shopping in the LA fashion district and found a lot of stuff we thought could work, color-wise, but it was stretchy and we were warned away from that.

In fact, the biggest advice I can give is to worry less about the exact hue (I've seen a range of burgundies accepted, from the more red to the more blue; ours was fairly in the middle and on the darker end), and more about the type of velvet you buy. If you can budget for it, silk velvet is magic, and while your pocketbook may cry for a while, I can confirm that it's totally worth it. I feel like a magical princess every time I put it on. We then lined it in a pretty bright red/cranberry colored silk charmeuse.

It's slippery and frustrating to sew, but again, SO WORTH IT. There are cheaper polyester velvets, but they photograph strangely. Also, avoid anything stretchy. They work for the pants quite well, but the coat is so heavy that it will never sit right if you use a stretch fabric.

That was a bit of an infodump, but YAY BATTLE HANDMAIDEN! I can't wait to see your progress!

Thank you Lisa! Very Happy

I will be steering away from silk as I'm vegan! Very Happy

I've been looking on here at your all the versions you guys have made and they look amazing!!

I've never made anything from scratch like this before! Yikes!

So far I've found this for the lining:

Possibly too pink?

and this for the velvet:

I know it's hard to tell from photos but thought they didn't look too bad.

The lining is brighter than you'd think! Rachel had a chance to see the original, and she confirmed that the lining is really a bright cranberry. I think your fabric choices look pretty great, honestly.

So the next thing is sewing advice: both of those fabrics will be super slippery, so if you don't have a walking foot, you'll want one. We also found that when we were sewing the lining on to the velvet, we had to hand baste it together, then machine stitch on top of that because otherwise it got all bubbly and strange. Hopefully you don't have to rip out as many seams as we did!

Those fabrics look fantastic! Is that a poly-velvet?

If it helps, we did a ton of research in this thread a few years ago when we did a group build of these: http://www.forum.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36541&start=120&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=

I think my biggest epiphany on this costume was that there are four box pleats in the back. It gives it exactly the fullness of the movie, but it is a detail that is easy to miss.

Also buried somewhere deep in that thread is the scanned pattern I made for our coats. It's sized for me though (5'6" 36"-30"-36").

So true! That's why I've put off remaking my coat for so long hahahaha! I should get on that though because I really love the outfit. Amadalia
