Okay, been spending the last few days researching Rey's Resistance Outfit. Here are some photos and such that should be helpful! I wanted to start a new thread as I grew tired of searching through all the others for references. Some of this stuff was posted in the sticky, but it was scattered, I wanted to better organize it! So if you have stuff you wanna contribute, please feel free to add it here!!! Smile

I bought fabric for the vest earlier this week at Hancock with their Spot the Bolt sale. While it's not herringbone as we all believe, I think this is an acceptable alternative for the time being. It is a wool/poly blend and the color and weave make for a nice look. LOL, I'll probably make a second version in the future when I come across better fabric.

Here are some screen caps and gifs:

And a couple links to some sketches that have been done!

(This one is collar detail)

Link to RPF Thread that has a great discussion on the costume going on!
http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=252497

If I run across any more info, I'll be sure to share it! Hopefully this helps!

Ahhhh!!! Just ran across this as a base pattern you can use for the vest!

Simplicity's 1590
http://www.simplicity.com/misses-1940s-retro-blouse/1590.html

As you can see, it can be altered very easily and princess seams added! What do you guys think? I might order it this week.

I would try to find a different pattern. The seams and darts on that one are too far off, and that will be the harder part to modify. I can't post pictures right now, but Simplicity 1558 has the princess seams (you'd still have to modify the pattern, but not as much.) i'm still trying to find a better pattern for the cut- in-one collar, though i've got a really old one I might try- McCalls m5481.

Nice find on the fabric, though. I had to get blue for my test vest!

hello

Looking for info/images on the belt/holster, anything you have would be appreciated. I'm putting it into the prototype schedule

Already posted this over on the sticky, but I thought I would show what I have so far. I started mine last night. So far I'm pretty happy with it. I hadn't seen the side seam on the bottom of the vest, so I might have to go back and change that. I'll post more photos as soon as it's done.

Rough Pattern (I ended up making the princess seams go further in and tapering the sides more on the final draft)

Mock up. It did't have the correct hourglass shape, so I went back and corrected the pattern. Now that I've seen jedibarriss's mock up, I believe I will go back and fix the purplum seams.

Outer vest base without the purplum.

Purplum and lining added. I decided to line it with the same fabric because my fabric (Poly/wool blend) is not stiff enough.

Finished sleeve cap one! The quilting was a nightmare, but worth it. The sleeve is DEFINITELY overstiched, otherwise, you just don't get the right shape. I also "surgered" the edging (I don't actually have a surger sadly, my machine only does faux surger stitches) just as it was in the film. You can't really tell in the screen shots, but I promise I saw it!!!

I'm aiming to have this whole costume done by Friday as I have a con this weekend. Hoping it looks decent. I know I'll have to go back and make adjustments once we get more clear photos lol.

Your pattern looks pretty good! However, since you're making a second version, a couple of suggestions: first, you definitely want coat weight wool. Suit weight wool is much more plentiful, but way too flimsy for this costume. Also, it will give the edges the right look when you do the edge stitching. Second, about that edge stitching: it looks like it's a variation on a blanket stitch, not just a serged edge, and the thread is quite thick. I'm doing mine by hand, with embroidery floss. The topstitching/edge stitching should also be much closer in color to the vest, although still definitely a shade or two lighter. Smile

That's my two cents, take it as you will. Mr. Green You're on a good track!

EDIT: One more useful tip! The shoulder padded things are cut on the bias. Bless the Chinese Theater and it's giant IMAX screen, it has been great for catching all the tiny details.

Thanks! Yeah, I think I did use a blanket stitch on mine, I just didn't know the name for it. Next round I will definitely be changing the color to a grey. Coat wool, huh? I did not know that was a thing lol. I've concluded that I'll need to ebay the fabric I'll need next round, as JoAnn's and Hancock doesn't seem to have what I need. And I did NOT see that it was cut on the bias, but I had wondered as I was adding the shoulder pads. It makes sense.

This version will be done for this weekend's con at least. Next go around should be much improved as I think we'll have more info as time passes.

At least this costume is loose enough to hide my small baby bump!

Heh, I spend way too much time in the LA fashion district, and went pretty heavily through the wool sections back when I made my Katara costume. Smile

This is way too dark, but for a visual, you'll want something this weighty:
http://www.moodfabrics.com/italian-gray-wool-cashmere-coating-308249.html

Think of a winter peacoat. It's the same fabric, more suited to outdoor wear, whereas suiting is made for, well, suits. It should give you the right texture and structure for this vest!

Nice! I'll also add: the front of the collar on the vest is cut in one with the front, so there should be a dart at the shoulder to get the right shape. This website sort of explains it: http://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/4970/understanding-the-basic-shawl-collar-pattern

So I spent all of yesterday taking the vest apart and reworking the shape. I am far happier with it now! I also fixed the collar by cutting it as was suggested and I also added a piece of felt in between the layers to get it to stand correctly. I also improved the back and added double stitching which really makes it look far more like what we have seen.

Please ignore the bad stitching all the way around. My machine did not like my thread lol. I'll have to come up with a better way to do the edges on my next version!

Here's fabric that someone found over at the RPF that really could work! I have't ordered any yet for my next version, but I'd love to hear feedback before I do!

Thanks once again for all the feedback! It's much appreciated![/url]
