I'd like to continue celebrating Endor Base and its members by featuring another Endorian. This months selection is our very own Base Membership Officer and PR Officer Kay_Dee - Kathy S.

Tell us something about yourself:

I began sewing costumes back in 2001 for Halloween. For the most part, I'm self taught. I had only taken home economics in Junior high to learn the basics of how to use a sewing machine and read simple patterns. The internet was a great help in developing my skills as I found message boards where other people worked on costumes and were great about sharing their expert advice! Particularly with Star Wars costuming, everyone was so welcoming and helpful.

How long have you been involved with the Rebel Legion:

I joined Rebel Legion back in 2004. So over 10 years now, wow! At the time I'd been primarily involved with Theforce.net costume and props group creating my Padme and Leia costumes. JedHead who also frequented the forums PM'd me because he knew I had made the Padme Picnic dress and suggested I join this new club the Rebel Legion. (I guess he also knew I was local to the San Francisco area and was trying to recruit for Endor Base? I'm not sure?) It turned out the timing was good because I went to Dragon Con for the first time that year and was able to march with the Rebel Legion in the Dragon*Con parade. That was my first convention ever and my first Rebel Legion event!

Endor Base Positions held (past or present)?

Base CO (several years - I've lost count), Base XO 2 years, Legion Council 1 year, Legion Costume Judge 1 year, Currently Base Membership Officer, Base webmaster, and Co-PR Officer.

What costume(s) do you have?

Rebel Legion, or all? LOL! Rebel Legion - I have Padme's Picnic dress which was my first accepted costume to the Legion. I then added Leia's Ceremonial Gown, Leias ANH Senate Gown, Padme's Purple Ep II Senate dress, Padme's Ep II blue deleted scene "Family" gown, Slave Leia, X-Wing Pilot, and Jedi. I also have 501st costumes - TIE Pilot, Imperial Officer, and Imperial Crew. Other genres I costume in are Disney, Battlestar Galactica, The Walking Dead, Historical, etc.

What costumes do you have in the works (if any)?

I have a lot of Star Wars projects that have been stalled for one reason or another. So, you never know which one I may pick up and work on - be it Imperial or Rebel! Maybe eventually my Biker Scout, my Night Owl, Leia ROTJ Endor, Barriss Offee, it's a huge list of things waiting to be made. And that does not include the non-Star Wars stuff I'm currently working on for Dragon Con and Disney's Halloween Party this year!

Do you have a favorite Troop/event:

I've been luck to do a number of different troops over the years, I can't pick a favorite since each has something special about it. Being Princess Leia at Skywalker Ranch for the Course of the Force kick off was pretty special. I enjoy hospital visits, parades (be it a local parade near home or Star Wars Weekends in Florida), basically any event where people are genuinely excited to see us and interact. At those times I feel that all the work I've put into my costumes is worth it because it brightens someone else's day!

What is your first Star Wars memory?

This may be long and boring but here I go! Maybe some kids from small towns in the 70s will relate? My dad told us there was this new movie he'd been reading about in his trade magazines (he was in radio) called "Star Wars" which was supposed to be really great with amazing special effects - and they wanted to take us to see it as a family! Our family never went to movies in the theater together because money was very tight. It is really my first memory of seeing a movie in a sit down theater rather than a drive-in. Naturally, the weekend my parents chose to drive us to the closest town Star Wars was showing in, a huge thunder storm hit, the roads were flooded, and we didn't make it there. The second weekend we chose, we got to the theater and the movie was sold out despite us arriving roughly 45 minutes early! (Welcome to the new phenomenon of sell out block busters! And welcome to my early lessons of don't ever get excited about anything, it may not happen!) The third time was a charm, mom learned we must purchase the tickets in the morning (there was no fandango of phone ordering back then). So we drove 1/2 to the theater that morning, got tickets, then drove back home. I was 7, my little sister was 4. I remember when Darth Vader and the stormtroopers blasted through the door on the Tantive IV my dad leaned to my sister and said "Don't be scared, this is just pretend."

After the movies, there was many years of trying to recapture the magic of seeing the movie through playing with action figures! Because seeing a movie multiple times in a theater was not an option, it was not shown on cable TV for many many years. VHS rentals did not come for many years either. Strange times back in the 70s!

Favorite Star Wars movie:

It's a tie between "Star Wars" (AKA Ep IV A New Hope) just because it has the magic of being the first introduction to the story, and Empire Strikes Back for the quality of the story telling, direction, and depth of character development. "Star Wars" will probably always win even if technically Empire could be the better movie.

Favorite Star Wars Character:

Oh man, this fluctuates between Leia, Han, and R2 depending on my mood. Sorry Luke, Chewie and 3PO - I love you all too! How can you make me choose!
