And we're at it again.

The paint isn't the easiest to work with and it flaked in places on the lekku, so new paint has been acquired. This time she has gotten some Ben Nye liquid dye and while we have only done small tests the results are so far much better and it doesn't rub off like the other paint.

I'll see about getting some pictures up in a couple of days. Smile

So, make that a week.
Anyway, a couple of pics of the new dye.

The first test on her skin. Both airbrushing and sponge have been used in the test.

This is the ears after they were airbrushed. We quite like the slightly darker color.

The airbrush in question and the mini compressor:

The mini compressor only sends out 47 decibel, so it's not uncomfortable to be around. Smile

And since the lekku are being repainted, firstly some velcro is added to it to attach the leather strips to, so they can be easily removed whenever the lekku needs a touch up.

This will also keep the strips firmly in place during trooping.

Great progress pics!

This should be in the Tutorial section of the forums.

Love the new paint job!!! That looks fantastic. I am starting to look into the paint. Where do you purchase the Ben Nye Liquid Dye? I've found it online but wasn't sure which size package I should get.

I honestly don't know where she bought her paint from as I was not a part of that process.

But I do have new pictures, I just haven't sorted them yet. (I'm still 'hungover' from the troop).
But kriff, this paint takes forever to apply and make it look good! We are still experimenting with ways to apply it, but for this troop we applied three layers and did touch ups a couple of times.
This time we did: long strokes with a sponge (thin layers), first horisontal, then vertical. It was evened out with the airbrush. Touch ups was done through dapping the paint on.

There are more experimenting to be done.

What did you use to remove your first paint job from the lekku?

Hmm, it's been a while and I wasn't a part of that, but I think it was simply removed with water and soap. Alcohol may also have been used, but I don't remember.

I realize I never got any new pictures up, but we have tried a couple of different application methods by now, and getting it done quickly and evenly is always the trick. She's now looking into trying another brand and color, either Kryolan or Mehron.

The greatest problem with the Ben Nye is that if you apply too thick a layer too quickly it will crack and flake off. It needs to be applied in very thin layers.

The airbrush couldn't work properly with the dye (even when it was thinned with sealer) so we have dropped that one again, and we are back to sponge, brushes, and rollers.
