tonight i watched my new ESB DVD (been wearing out my VHS tapes since 1998!) on the big screen, and noticed things I really cant make out in the starwarsscreencaps.

The command center technicians not only have heasets but they all have code cylinders.

Everyone seems to have a rank badge on the right shoulder.

About half of the techs are wearing qulted vests. harder to see on the screencaps but you can make out the quilting as they run past, away from the camera (like when Luke runs to Chewie in the hanger).

One cat is even wearing a Navy type hat with a ear comm and dosimiters. I noted him in the lower left corner as the pilots and tropers run from center screen to bottom screen just as Liea is briefing the Pilots.

oh , wait..hes got a Radio and Keys---he is the Lead Mechanic! (my lead mechanic gets a Radio so the supervisor can yell at him)

Phyllis is right, these background guys were just cobbled together.

Yes, I noticed the code cylinders as well, but I couldn't make out if they are the same type as the X-Wing pilots, or something else.

I do think that the standards need to be re-visited and expanded for the Hoth Hangar Troopers and the Techs.

I don't have enough computer savvy to wrench captures from a DVD like you have provided David....that is one of my many "weak" points...
my eyesight is also rather poor...so these visuals help a great deal...

I think that a lot of the haphazard "things" that some of these background characters have with their costumes on screen could possibly be used as "optional items" .

I agree that the flaps on the slash pockets should have no quilting...
and it would appear that the vests have quilting in the back below the yoke line...
and in the front below the yoke line to the slash pocket.

I plan to remove the quilting on the pocket flaps of my Hangar Trooper/Tech vest and also probably add the little "window" for the rank badge on the right shoulder.

I do plan to open up a discussion for updating the Hoth Hangar Trooper/Hoth Tech Standards....
included in the discussion will be should we include tan AND gray fligtsuits - what is seen "on screen" vs what "really is"....

Not sure where exactly I should put the discussion...
in the RAID forums...
in this forum...
or just out in the regular "Trooper" forums...

my guess would be the regular Trooper forums just in case there is someone currently working on one of these costumes.

I definitely want the discussion to have an "end point"...otherwise discussions sometimes go in circles.

After decisions are made on these two costumes, I will make a new "what you need to know" thingy....using the updated standards...

how does that sound?

One of the things that really "gets me" too about these...and where I am not sure that I am 100% convinced about the color of the jumpsuits is:

If the vest and the jumpsuit/flightsuit are both tan...
why is there such a dramatic color difference between the two when you see them in screen captures?

The flightsuit looks MUCH lighter than the vest....
I am just not sure what to make of it..

type of fabric?

Is the vest REALLY dark?

dunno...

both sides gone:

Vest looks great Phyllis - how did you remove the quilting on the pocket flaps? Did you just unpick the stitching, or did you make new flaps?
I just got cleared with quilted flaps, seemingly moments before we realised there were no quilted flaps!

Re the flight suit colours, I agree it's weird. My vest is a light tan, like yours. I have just got a tan flight suit for my Yavin tech, and it's DARKER than my Hoth vest, so I couldn't possibly use it as part of my Hoth costume.

Either the vests were much darker brown than they appear on screen, or the suits were much much lighter.

As a compromise I chose a very light suit for my Hoth Tech, more of a creamy white than tan, in order to try and get the balance right between the suit and the vest.

I definitely agree members should be allowed to choose between screen accurate-colours, and costume-accurate colours.

I just used a seam ripper on the quilting...it was a little tedious...but not too bad...

yeah..
the whole color thing is nuts...
and...
honestly...

this insignia that is supposed to be on the flightsuits..

I have never seen a hint of that on any screen capture..

but...

I will be the first to admit that my eyesight is very poor...

i went nuts several days ago with screen captures, working them them in Photobucket to lighten them up and crop them to a viewable size.
I also added blue arrows for those viewing on mobile devices. I know how those screens dont always show everything.
You can see the rank patches here:

Yes I'm gonna have a go at making the cloth insignia as well. Is there anywhere we can find out what they all mean? Or should I just pick one and stick with it . . .

Glad to help!

I would say make two or three and pick the one you like best.

and....do you see something else a bit strange that the Hangar Trooper has on in this photo?

Again...thank you David for making this stuff actually visible to my eyes...
I am seeing stuff in your cleaned up images that I never caught on the small and grainy images I was working with so many years ago...
in the age of
BBR
(before Blu ray)

Yesss! I saw this the other day and forgot to mention it.
The Hangar Trooper has the Trench Trooper jacket under his vest, just like Luke. So it seems it was not unique to Mark Hamill after all.
Presumably he would have the grey quilted pants as well, pity we can't see a full figure shot of this guy.
