would the above be acceptable as a base hat for the Hoth Tech? this way, only a back flap need be added and lightening up the black (maybe bleaching, then dying if necessary?)?

Something like this would be better...

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/used-usn-50s-era-deck-hat-dark-khaki.aspx?a=884880

I bought a deck hat similar to the one above.....took it apart and made a pattern and then sewed my Tech hat out of a dark gray bottomweight twill.

The Star Wars Archive just put up this pic with Hoth techs in the background. It looks like a new image:

Here are the Hoth Battlefield pictures. This album has some of the best reference pictures out there.

So the Hanger Trooper suit is not quilted at all? I just want to make sure. It does not mention it in the above list of requirments but I saw it in the standards thread. I am guessing its because it was based on older info and was not updated yet? I know the vest is quilted but not the grey suit itself right?

Shirt/Pants or Jumpsuit/Coverall in a white, gray, beige, or ecru color with quilted forearms

The only quilting is on the tan jacket.

The actual movie jumpsuit was gray....I got that from one of the actors who wore the costume.

It is basically the same jumpsuit as the AT-AT driver...
same jumpsuit as X-Wing Pilot only in gray instead of orange.

With the release of the much anticipated Original Trilogy Star Wars costuming book, with full length professional photos, we have learned a LOT about the costumes.

Hoth coveralls were TAN/ Light Brown and the hanger technicians did not necessarily have the same vest as Luke, etc. take note of the colors, qulting, size of window for the rank badge, etc in this photo from Page 88 of the OT costuming book:

As noted, the new book has answered a lot of questions...
and
brought to light many more.

With regard to the quilting on the pockets, initially I was working with an image from one of the actors who actually wore the costume. He sent me a photo of him in his costume and it did appear that there was quilting on the pocket flaps. The image was not huge and it would appear that the quilting that appeared on the flaps was, perhaps, wrinkling.

Also at the time of making the first of these costumes, where I suspected that Luke's character on Hoth was a unique blend of several different costume elements, I was not sure...
the new costume book did verify that Luke wore the Hangar/Tech vest with the Trench Trooper jacket...and he was the only one who was so outfitted.

i went back through my collection of screenshots and collected photos, and took the liberty to invert the colors on these hanger techs (USNavy winter caps and jackboots). They do not seem to have any quilting:

yet these ladies--likely from the command center--have quilting and jackboots, but no headgear, and stylish hair.

at 1:10 at Dack jumps into the back of the T47 we see a Hanger Tech stand up and move off screen to the left.
His vest is clearly quilted but I cannot see the front of the costume vest.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WASr5-mS238

at 5:23 the tech detaching R2s lifting tube and at 5:24 the tech walking past R2 have un-quilted vests, and the tech seen from the front lifting his arms to clear R2s lifting tube does not have pockets or flaps. The vest is quite plain.

From what we know of the new book , the Hanger Troopers have pockets, but not quilting from the photo illusted on page 88.

I can see the point to have the H H Teck vests appear both quilted or non quilted based on images from the movie. The current standard calls for a quilted vest with a padded upright collar. Personally I would like to get the standard changed to make the quilting optonal

good point...

and...one of my biggest problems when I started the Hoth project so many years ago is that I am not a "tech" person...there was no BlueRay..no OT costume book...and I was forced to use what I could find...
which was always "iffy" at best...

This is the photo of the actor in costume that I spoke about...you have probably already seen this photo...but here it is again

there does appear to be quilting on the front anyway...

With the release of the book "Costumes of the Original Trilogy"....
much of this information will need to be revisited...

In addition to the colours and other info discovered in the book, I've been noticing numerous other costume combinations not mentioned in the standards.
Many Techs wear rank badges on their left breast, and one or two also have the square Luke/Officer type with the dots on their right shoulder.
Some also wear the ear pieces usually found on Hangar Troopers.

I was watching the deleted wampa scenes on the blu-ray, and saw one Tech with an ear piece and pair of goggles on his soft hat, but not sure how admissable this would be given it's not in the finished film.
There were also a few Hangar Troopers with what appeared to be fully quilted vest fronts (i.e: from the bottom of the yoke to the bottom hem), but no pockets or flaps.

It seems clear to me that although the makers made a distinction between the Trooper and Tech types, many of the costume components were handed out randomly, some featuring very plain combinations, others dripping with lots of different accessories.

Not sure how you would proceed with this going forward with a revised CRL - perhaps a list of acceptable combinations?

thats my plan to sort out this week. I have just been on Starwarsscreencaps.com and noted the combinations you spoke of. I even found a hanger tech wearing a hanger trooper hat. Vests with and without quilt lines, and what appears to be a sash pocket just like the Endor troopers but no flap.

Once i get all my images sorted we can discuss it here. I dont see any sweeping changes to the costume Standard, rather I see the change more as options such as you described above. I have long felt that teams worked to make these costumes, quickly, and didn't always match 100% or they just ran out of this bit or that bob.

the blurays serve thier purpose and gave us the Millenium Falcon crew costume. Not many people do the techs, so I really dont want to get TOO crazy with options, but leave it open enough to find a tech on screen, and copy what you see.

Background characters such as these really did have random pieces...
one only needs to look at the Celebration Scene from A New Hope to see that
things were handed out randomly....
worn randomly
adjustments to equipment was made as needed...
and..
as background characters...we are never supposed to see that...lol...
