* I've decided to post this outside the members area as we have a lot of new people that are either interested or have already commenced work on their first costume and should be able to read about the direction of the base *

Dear Rebels.

As you know, there is about to be a change to the command structure within Tython base. Thank you all very much for your continued support and belief in the future of our base as I begin my term as your Base Commanding Officer. I am very proud to do so and feel extremely optimistic about the coming year.

The last 12 months.

This was, in my opinion, the year we came of age as an effective base.

We set ourselves up with banners, backdrops and an incredible cardback that makes our convention display the envy of some of the big international bases. We also accumulated incidentals along the way. The pamphlet holders the table coverings, stands for displaying headgear, base stamp pads, collection boxes etc etc. Alex our honorary member and resident prop specialist also came up with an incredibly impressive saber stand for displaying our weapons of choice.

This is our anchor and has been perhaps the most significant part of our metamorphosis . As witnessed at the recent inaugural Oz comic con in Sydney, we can now, without too much preparation, deliver a professional, attractive display that has the public and media talking about, long after the event.

We finalised designs and voted on, both our base and Jedi temple logos.

We also welcomed new members with some of the best costumes our base has seen. Increasing our numbers was, and still remains an important issue. I believe that our numbers of even a year ago weren't quite the critical mass needed to sustain a functional base. Allocating roles and responsibilities can be tricky with limited numbers and coverage of requested appearances was sometimes not possible. We are in a much better position now and if we can increase our numbers by another 5 or 6 over the coming year, I think we will be self sustaining and you will see the base take on a different personality.

If you compare the look of our display at 2013 Supanova ( really just a few tables and some pictures on a dividing wall ) with our 2014 Supanova display, it really appeared to represent 4 or 5 years progression at a normal growth rate. 2015 will be another leap with some big ideas already in the works. We will definitely be punching above our weight and I expect an explosion of interest in Star Wars and Tython leading into 2015 and the release of the next chapter of our favourite saga.

DIRECTION for the coming year...

Despite this role being one of great privilege, it wasn't an easy decision for me to make for personal reasons, however having put my hand up, I promise to take the role seriously and give you the best leadership I am able to give.

Transparency.

If people think they aren't getting the whole story or that decisions have been made without consulting the membership, dissatisfaction and questions ensue. We won't have everyone in agreement every time but everybody will certainly be able to have their say in contributing to the choices made within the base. There will be no closed doors, you will know what I know. Obviously confidentiality with delicate matters needs to be respected but this is our base to be run by us for us.

Which brings me to an important point. I DON'T expect to micro manage Tython.
We are all mature adults with various skill sets. Everyone of you has something unique to bring to the table and it would be a mistake not to allow these qualities to be utilised.

One of the changes I will be making for the new year is the formation of " teams" as opposed to individuals in the various roles. I know from experience that if one person is left with the load of that department, it can become daunting and leaves people burnt out.

The new teams will be responsible for managing their role in Tythons development. They will be tasked with objectives and can then call apron any resources within Tython to achieve the goal. Understand that all Tython members can be expected to help wherever needed but the individual teams will steer their ships.

The teams will be Command team
Membership officer team
Public relations team
Merchandise team
Prop concept development and construction team
501st liaison team
Webmaster / IT

Some of us will wear more then one hat and pop up in more then one team. This won't be as common when our numbers increase.

In the past, our default costume for new members was the generic Jedi. Generic Jedi can look amazing but if we have a room full of generics and nothing else, can we really expect the public to be blown away ? The public are attracted to familiarity, an image or character they can instantly identify as coming from the Star Wars universe. If you want to do a generic Jedi, you will have 100% support ( hell I'm the temple master and would love as many Jedi as possible ) but there are more iconic characters that we can suggest to new members that will serve us well. X wing pilots, rebel fleet troopers, Endor Commandos are all costumes that can be achieved as initial builds. How impressive would it be to see squads of X wing pilots or rebel troopers together at events ? And don't start me on face characters. How amazing to have a Qui Gon Jinn, a PLO Koon , Shak Tii or C3 PO ?
There are over 200 Rebel costumes, we need to expand our thinking.

Relationship with the 501st.

The 501st are a larger group then ours, have been here longer and are far more established. I have many close friendships with their members and have the utmost respect for their professionalism and quality of operation.

Those that know me, know that my mantra has always been that we need to have a close relationship with our brothers and sisters at the 501st. Why ?
Well, RL (and Star Wars for that matter ) means different things to different people.

For me, the enjoyment comes when the public, especially children, are blown away by our presence . If they feel like they have stepped onto the set of a Star Wars movie and we have bought joy and appreciation, our job is done and has been very rewarding.

If you see a whole lot of " dark side " characters it looks pretty impressive. If you see a whole lot of " light side" characters it looks pretty impressive also. See a huge contingent of both sides of the force and it is breath taking. Grown adults are reduced to being children. Children are smiling and squeeling. It's a great feeling. We need each other to achieve this. Ah.. Thank you Qui Gonn.. We are "Symbians"

The other reason of course is that they are a great group of people that are the same as us, they love Star Wars. We speak the same language.

Make no mistake, I am 100% loyal to Tython and making this a great experience for all of you. This in my mind however is an important part of the process.

I have known of bases where virtually everyone is a dual member and the lines of separation are virtually none existent . What a cool place that would be : )

CODES OF CONDUCT / BEHAVIOUR

We have had our share of controversy. When dealing with groups of people from different backgrounds and personality types, you expect there to be some clashes.

But here's the thing. This is our family. We don't want to mess it up. I implore you that today is the day. The day that we let anything from the past go. This is a new slate and anything from the past is exactly that, the past. We are going to get angry and frustrated at times but come on, we aren't children anymore, we can work it out.

I ask that, like my promise to you above, you strive for transparency and honesty in your dealings with other members.

I have never been a huge fan of Face Book and believe that to a large degree it has killed off our forums, but I understand that it serves a specific purpose and is a necessary evil. That said, it can facilitate bitchiness through personalised groups that can bully people not within the group. It can also leave people misinterpreting comments as it doesn't indicate the true emotion with which something is written. I know Facebook is here to stay but please, try to keep as much as possible on our forums ( activity is what someone who is directed to our forum sees as a first impression ) and if it's a more relaxed enquiry regarding an RL event, organisation of etc, remember, an actual phone call can make life a lot easier.

So just to summarise, this is a volunteer group who's members give their own time to make a better place for those around them. Don't make someone question why they might be involved with such an organisation. Remember, we are family. I don't expect us to hold hands and sing Kum ba yah but I do expect, friendly, respectful professional behaviour from all members at all times.

While we are on this point, as I mentioned above, to this new administration, Tython begins today. I don't care what has happened in the past with various groups. Every Star Wars costume, interest and fan group whether it be 501st, Mandos, Star Walking group or whomever , are welcome in the Tython house at any time. We are the Switzerland of Star Wars clubs.

I am not political in any way and will NOT be joining sides in any dispute that looks to marginalise another . I have been amazed over the last 12 months to see the political divisions both here and around the world , rife throughout the RL and 501st. Tearing clubs apart, causing hostilities and hurting people. Even as I write this, I learn of another political scandal effecting the current legion command elections. I won't be dragged in. Let's focus on ourselves, be professional and have a ball.

MANTRA / BASE GOALS

To achieve the highest quality of costuming and reproduction of Star Wars characters.

To bring fun and excitement to the public through professional appearances .

To help our chosen charities.

To remain friendly, courteous and respectful in our dealings with others.

To continue to grow and improve our base.

To have fun and enjoy our involvement in the base.

THE TEAMS...

unfortunately there are a few people I haven't yet been able to contact in relation to accepting certain positions. I'm also aware that we have a few new members ( and a few established members for that matter ) that have incredible talent that may want to join certain teams . That is most encouraged. Please PM me your desired area and I will add your names to the official lists.

Base Executive Officer ( XO )

It gives me great pleasure to announce that I have chosen Josh ( Obickay ) to be your XO.

Josh has always been very liked by members off both Rebel Legion and 501st.
He has impeccable standards of construction with his own costumes as well as being extremely talented, helping to create props for both legions.

Josh has always been very supportive of Tython base even when it wasn't always popular to do so. He "crossed the floor" and offered support at a time when other dual members were turning away from the base. I was impressed at the time and have never forgotten his loyalty.

A respected, talented member that I look forward to working with.

Base recruitment/ membership team

Jason ( Fyr ) and Max ( Ixam Let'si )

This is perhaps the most important department , looking towards the next 12 months. This will be the " Go to" team for all questions regarding costumes. They will help new members and provide the base with an invaluable source of information on standards and specifics of various costumes.

This is not an easy role. It is a fine line between encouraging a new member with timely information and providing too much enthusiasm too soon, overwhelming them, ultimately reducing their desire.

This team I am confident will strike a perfect balance.

These two individuals work like no others. They spend a lot of time researching technicalities and specifics of the various costumes and it makes me very comfortable that we, as a base will have this resource.

Public relations team.

Shane ( ShaneArc ), Sarah ( Sez )

This team is a no brainer. Shane will take the position straight away with Sez joining Shane once her final approval comes through.

Both of these members work on the 501st PR team and have established contacts with various organisations and know the job already.

Merchandising team

Kat Twilek And Dashy

Kat will continue with this portfolio bringing in Dashy and her incredible design skills.

Prop concept, development and construction

Thomas ( Foxtom Inau ) Josh ( Obickay ) and Alex

This was such an effective team in 2013. The boys will continue their great work with some big projects in the wings already.

501st liaison team

Dave ( davej ) Sarah ( Sez )

Webmaster / IT

Shane ( ShaneArc )

Make no mistake. This is a DREAM team.

A strong, strong structure that will serve Tython well over the next year.. A reminder again to all those new /current members that would like to be added to any of the teams, just drop me a pm.

Can I say one more thing.

Jason has worked long and tirelessly in his role as our BCO. As he has mentioned, it can be a very thankless task but he has dedicated hundreds of hours to this job. He has chosen to take those hours that would normally be spent with his family and give them to us and to making your playground a better place.

On behalf of the base, thank you Jason.

Perhaps the next time we all meet up, a warm smile and a handshake would be in order and I know he will appreciate it.

Well that's it for now. If you have managed to read all the way through, I'm impressed with your powers of concentration and your determination : )

Seriously though, let's make it a great year . I look forward to seeing you all soon

Kind regards,

Shay.

Thank you Shay for those motivating and illuminating words.

It gives me great pride to be apart of your command team and I'll serve as Base Recruitment officer along side Fyr to the best of my abilities.

I eagerly look forward to the future and feel that the command staff will be a well oiled machine.

I'm looking forward to seeing all of you in the near future and With the upcoming Star Wars Rebels coming up I think this could be a wonderful time to really promote the Rebel Legion.

I am looking forward to an awesome year... I have only been with you guys a month or two, so haven't seen too much base growth first hand - though I am hoping to see plenty in my time with you guys; I am more than willing to help in this too!

Congrats Shay on BCO, and also to everyone else on their positions!
