Here's a sneak peek at the saber I made for my father-in-law for Christmas.

For some back story, Lesmarie and I were sitting at dinner Sunday night (Dec 22) trying to figure out what to get him. Last year I made a Jawa for my mother-in-law and had asked him at the time if he'd want a costume too. He initially said no, but that seemed to change as he handled at troops for us and watched the three of us in SWW. I had time to make a Jedi, but would need measurements that would spoil the surprise. I jokingly tossed out that I could make lightsaber for him, but that it should hold Jack Daniels. As it seems is the case with many of my crazy ideas, we started talking about it and it got less crazy.

Lesmarie had a lot of great design ideas, both initially and after I started building, that made this one really special. The pommel is similar to a bottle neck. Appropriately, the wooden cap unscrews to reveal the "fuel cell" that can be filled with a liquid of choice (yes, we'll make sure he's good at events :-)). The grip is stained white oak slats with barrel rings around them and slots that show how full the "fuel cell" is. The end of the cap (unseen here) has a medallion inserted that reads "Order of the Gentleman".

I still have some work to do, but it would work as a belt hanger now. This was almost all built from extra pieces I had in the shop, though I did have to order the switch which arrived on Christmas Eve. I was going to add light, but I couldn't find the extra lens that I have somewhere, though I'm not sure if i could've fit that into the two day build time.

Anyway, here is Varjack!

Thanks everyone! I took a couple of quick pictures of the details that weren't in the first shot. Thankfully, I found a small bottle that fit into the hilt perfectly.

It's a glass bottle that came with SodaStream syrup that I found at Bed Bath and Beyond. It didn't fit with the label, but slid right in once I removed the label. I believe the bottle is right at 1.25". Below is a shot of the bottle and the piece I machined to hold it. I figured a removable bottle would help protect the electronics while filling, though there's glue between the aluminum and glass that should prevent anything from running down inside.

That is beautiful.

If you were to start manufacturing lightsabers with built-in flasks... well, Dragon Con would adore you.
