I don't mind diddling in leatherworking and have enough leather to make a sheath...and that doesn't look too complicated...
but..
I would need the knife...in order to make a pattern and insure that the knife actually fits into the sheath...

Don't have it yet, should be here in couple weeks I think. When I do get it and you want to give it a shot, that would awesome! I'll be happy to pay for any materials and time you use.

back to the project pile now that the Joliet Library event is over...
spent a lot of time working on that project...lol...

so...
we are on to something that has been laying around for awhile...
the General Lando blaster.

This is an Arsenal props blaster....
an OK sculpt but FULL of bubbles....
I filled most of them but in certain areas..
.it was just too difficult...
thin areas to begin with and even though you fill the holes that the bubbles make when you go back and sand...you still take off some of the resin and at some point you have to stop sanding...

now on to making the holster for it....

a weird belt and holster set up indeed....Lando wears it across his chest and it just does not look like a design that will actually stay in place...
sigh...
on screen vs real life....

first a paper pattern:

soak the leather

form

and now to let dry

I learned a few things from my last couple of leather projects....
so....
when this is dry...
I will see if those techniques work..

not really....
It is a part of my on going "I gotta have me one of each blaster" campaign and the holster is more practice...

but should that slacker ever get serious...
then I am one step ahead of the game...

Done with the General Lando blaster and holster...
the holster came out pretty decent...learned a lot from past mistakes..

hard to believe it goes from this...

to

this

Again....
the steps for someone wanting to learn to do a little leatherworking.

Start with making a pattern out of paper and use the blaster itself as the guide for size and reference shots for shape:

Cut the leather (I usually cut a little larger..you can remove extra leather...but you can't add any on) and then soak in warm/hot water to make pliable:

Then use the blaster as a mold and form the wet leather over it

Let the wet leather dry....

After it is dry I used a leather cement to glue together at the seams...
this in one thing I learned to do and it will make punching holes for the hand sewing a LOT easier.

Mark the leather with the leather wheel tool every other "dimple" will have a hole punched in it

Stitch using the two needle method:

and

viola'

holster

for the shoulder strap - I just used a waste piece of leather that I had from trimming a wider belt blank.

As near as I could determine from the reference photos, the holster was snapped to the belt with line 24 snaps.....so I punched and added the snaps from what I could tell from the photo of Lando

check the fit

then dye...

and...

you are done..

Hope that helps someone interested in making a holster...
again...
I don't have any fancy tools...
and...
I don't know what I am doing...

So....what do we want to start next?

Step One:

What do I have....
What do I need...

I am sure you can guess this is a Y-Wing costume....

Found that I pretty much have everything I need for the basic vest, gaiters, ejection harness and belt anyway...

fabric...
check...using the same fabric I used for Scott's

Clips...check
strapping....check
Velcro...check

Now to remember how I made Scott's

Gaiters...

well...
I made the gaiters pictured for my Rebel Vanguard..

also used them for the Endor Gunner....

but...
found they would have to be re-worked.....and best of all...I will still be able to use them for the Rebel Vanguard or Gunner as I am sure they are about the same...
The Endor Gunners probably used the Y-Wing Gaiters as it appeared that much of the Endor Gunner stuff was "borrowed" anyway...
and..the scenes ended up cut out...

So....guess we start with mods to the gaiters...

then the flak vest...which I will probably have to scale the pattern down cuz I am shorter...

Ejection harness and belt should be easy...

Then I will be bothering Scott for what he used to outfit the vest...
and perhaps adding some of the details from our newest Y-Wing...

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnnnnnd

look what snuck out of the old closet this morning...

The return of the Y-Wing Pilot project...
ugh....

I have a bad feeling about this...

I feel that if I don't finish this project this time around....it may never get done.

Acutally, I do have quite a bit done

the belt
the ejection harness
the gaiters
the flightsuit
the vest straps and back
and
most of the greeblies....

BUT

The vest is giving me nightmares....
too short
too long
too round
too square
too this
too that

I have taken it apart more times than I care to admit and it is now down to the belly pouch....

so ...
rather than dive right into the nightmare of the belly pouch attachment I decided to start smaller and finish the hose.

The hose might sound simple...
but I learned the hard way (Hoth and Endor hardpacks) that finding hose is a decent into hell. They end up to either too small or too large in diameter...but mostly...they end up too stiff.

Since the Y-Wing Pilot's hose is covered in a fabric sleeve I went with a really thick natural fiber rope...about 1 inch in diameter.

I then basted a sleeve of white cotton larger than the rope

turned the sleeve inside out (not an easy task btw)

and then pulled it over the rope (which I have an attaching elbow on already)

The rope is too long right now, but I am holding off trimming it to size till I get the vest done...

for now I just have it held on with a rubber band.

I think this "hose" will hang really nice and loose and not be so stiff and sticking out all over the place...

That rope trick is a brilliant solution.

If the natural rope proves to be too stiff, nylon rope like the stuff mountain climbers use, might be a little more cooperative. I know Home Depot sells it by the foot for a reasonable price.

Turning a long fabric tube inside out is a pain in the rear, ain't it?? Confused

couple hours later....

have the belly pouch formed and attached with pins for now..

layed out everything else to see if I like it or not before I begin actually attaching anything....

dunno

and the weathering technique I am planning on using...

the infamous yellow square with the black wash while wet

and dry

to be honest....
I am still terribly confused...

I have been looking at this photo:

and zeroed in on the guy who is supposed to be a Y-Wing Pilot (I am assuming)

and I am finding some differences of greeblies...

though..
as you will note...

lol..

this guy has his gaiters on upside down...

also...
his ejection harness appears to be silver...
he perhaps picked up one of the X-Wing pilot ejection harnesses?

gotta love it..

LOL...that pic is all kinda messed up, Y-winger with upside down gaiters, wrong ejection harness, and craddling an A-wing bucket...Xwinger holding a B-wing helmet, a b-wing pilot with an a-wing helmet, a half dress X-winger with an a wing bucket...and they are being photo bombed by a tusken Mr. Green
