It melts......
nylon is pretty much like plastic...

Very Happy

You have to be careful that the iron is not too hot when you iron it too...
it can melt...

Will the melting keep it from fraying?

You can do that with nylon strapping...hold a lighter to the strapping to melt the ends and stop the fraying...
but...
nylon strapping is many, many layers of tightly woven "fibers"...

this fabric is basically one "layer"....
"melting" it deforms it...
and puckers it..
and actually will set it on fire when it is as thin as a single layer of fabric.

Thinking outside the box here, but what if you outlined the area you were gonna cut with something like say... E6000? "draw" an outline in the fabric with it, let it dry, then cut it out with just the edge of the glue on the piece. so it holds the fabric from fraying, but not enough to really show? or even a water soluble adhesive, and you could wash it out after you've sewn it together?
Really have no idea, just a thought Mr. Green

The zig zag does work...
it is just time consuming to do it...

I made these Alliance flags the same way....
they were a major pain...
but I did learn a few tricks when I made them...

The easier thing about the Alliance flag is that the red shape is much more simple than this black one...

This will be a miserable project....there is no getting around it..
but..
ya gotta do what ya gotta do..

When I make flags for color guard, we use the same type of fabrics.

Here are some tips that might help.

Use wonder under to fuse the applique piece to the main flag fabric. wonder under is a 2 sided heat fusible material that works well with low heat projects. Its found at JoAnns by the interfacing.

When using the wonder under I cut out my fabric just a bit bigger than the design and cut a piece of wonder under the same size as my cut piece of fabric. Then fuse the wonder under on the rough side (glue side) to the fabric. Use a pencil to trace the design to the fabric and cut it out.
Then when you are ready to fuse it to the main fabric, peel away the backing on the wonder under (smooth side paper backing) and fuse with low heat to the main fabric. This makes it so you don't have to use pins with the slippery stuff.

Ziz zag around the whole thing. This will reduce the fraying, there will still be some, but it's not as noticeable. If you have areas that are fraying badly, use a bit of fray check put on with a small paint brush. By using a paint brush instead of directly from the tube you can control how much of the fray check bleeds into the fabric.

Hope that helps a bit. It's how I did this one:

Awesome advice Beth...
I do have some heat bond that I used on the Alliance flags too...
and do intend to use some of the heat bond when trying to attach side 2 of the black logo....that is critical to get both sides lined up....
one of the biggest challenges in this logo is how there are so many "points" which are so narrow...
I finished up side one...
and will bond side two (hopefully) tomorrow...
and finish the stictching of side two..

Also...
got in my styrofoam heads and tried one of them out on the second set of Endor Commando headgear for the Joliet Library event...
the styrofoam heads are still smaller than an average head...
I think that the male ones I bought were still under 22 inches...and I don't think my head is that large cuz that Naboo Pilot bucket fits on my head...and I think my Imperial Officer hat is like a 23 1/2" size...
so..
these heads are still small and you can tell by the way the soft helmet sits on it...

So....we are set for the Library event...
2 Endor headgers
2 Hoth headgears
and
I do have 2 RFT buckets....
in addition to the Tech bucket...

Hey Phyllis, there's an interest check for OT saber hooks and hex belt buckles if you're looking for them for your Luke belt project.

do you have the knife?

and...

where I do hate sewing......
with a passion...
and don't want to sew anymore...

I don't mind diddling in leatherworking and have enough leather to make a sheath...and that doesn't look too complicated...
but..
I would need the knife...in order to make a pattern and insure that the knife actually fits into the sheath...
