Stuart Freeborn passed away today. He created the looks for Chewbacca and Yoda. He was a great talent. He will be missed. His work will live FOREVER!

A true pioneer of the make up effects industry. His career spanned 7 decades and over 70 films. Besides building Chewie and sculpting and building Yoda, he was responsible for many other memorable creatures in many films. It was his idea to use scotch-lite on the Kryptonian costumes in Richard Donner's Superman (1978).

He also created the famous apes for 2001: A Space Odyssey's "Dawn of Man" sequence. The legend in Hollywood is that the Academy believed that Kubrick simply used real apes.
It was on that film that he invented the mechanical masks that would later be used to build Chewie and countless other creatures. In the process of doing so, he laid the foundation for modern movie animatronics. Yoda, E.T., even the incredible full-sized dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, can count Stuart and his apes as their ancestors.
He also invented hair punching techniques using hypodermic needles on 2001. Everything up to that point had been hand laid in with glue, which didn't make for very realistic hair lines.

Peter even stated that he was at Celebration: Europe I think, or some other convention that Peter had been a guest at in Europe around the same time.
