I have started an Obi-wan ANH build. I am custom making all the soft parts.

I consulted with a wardrobe specialist in the film industry who is certain the fabric for the tunic, tabbard, and obi is called Shantung Silk. It has a distinct texture consisting of a single-direction weave, with irregular shaped woven threads, and slubs. You can see the pattern in close up shots, especially if you watch the Blu Ray.

This is mine (unwashed, unweathered, unhemmed):

These are the boots I am using:

I have ordered a belt from MPFilmcraft, and I have a custom saber on its way.

I will post more pics soon.

Where did you find that fabric, because it is gorgeous!
I just love that rugged textured look it has.

I lucked out. I bought it at a fabric store in Toronto called King Textiles. I initially saw it in orange in the silk section and took a sample. Then I found it in another section of the store in the yellow-beige colour and bought everything they had (8.75 m). I will take a look again in a week or so and let you know if they have it again. It is not cheap ($20/m) but it is great fabric.

My saber arrived. I need to change the ignition switch to the proper bubble strip and add the Graflex clamp lever still, but once that is done and it is repainted, it should be good.

is the buckle gold?
the standards just say metal,
but action figures and reference photos seem gold.

That fabric looks extremely spot-on, Doug. You were quite lucky to find it!

Keep up the great work!

@sze-wan: The buckle does look like some antique brass.

I'd call it brassy...or brushed brass or gold. As long as it's not obviously silver colored you should be good.

And I'm SOOOOooooo gonna be making this costume in the relatively near future!!!

I'm hoping to finish the tunic this weekend. The tunic has 5 patches on it, in a putty brown colour. The fabric has a very distinct criss-cross weave, similar to burlap. On the Blu Ray you can see the patches were set in behind the silk fabric, as some of the silk edges are left raw and fraying around the patches. There is one large irregular shaped patch on the right shoulder near the seam, one thin vertical rectangular patch on the left chest near or at the arm seam, one on the front trim lower down, and one diamond shaped patch on each elbow. These aren't the best reference photos, but you can clearly make out the shape of each if you pause the Blu Ray.

Right Shoulder

Left Armpit

Left Elbow

Right Elbow

Trim (lower)

Looks great, Doug!

I love the Ben Kenobi style and hope to do it myself sometime...

Thanks for the material info!

Good luck for your WIP Ben

Does this fabric have name or category? In otherwords, how would we call this fabric in order to find it locally?

I'm told the name is Shantung Silk. But I have seen some fabrics with this name that don't look like this at all. Up close it reminds me of that grass wallpaper - it has long uneven threads all going the one way, and then tiny white threads going the other way, holding the wide (silk) together. Here and there are the little nubs.

I guess the best thing is to use the name and give the description and see if the person knows the fabric. It was apparently popular in decor in the 1970s. It sort of looks like a curtain fabric.
