As most of you know...
the Imperial Cadet Training that was designed and built by Steve Szyndrowski and Ashley McClintock (and I am sure there were others) was a HUGE success at both C2E2 and the Joliet Library event.

The only drawback of the original design was the weight of the pieces and their bulk. Tools were also needed to assemble....

Steve has decided to put a spin on the game and make it a more or less "Rebel" thing because it was strange to have Clones firing at Stormtroopers and Biker Scouts...
makes sense...

So...he thought that maybe the 3 barricades for the Imperials to hide behind should be 3 iconic scenes from the OT...

Perhaps the hallway on the Tantive

out in the snow on Hoth

and

in the forests of Endor

So...

I thought that these scenes from the 3 OT movies could be interpreted onto canvas fabric and (utilizing sleeves at the top and bottom) be slipped onto a PVC frame..

I started to build the framing:

For outdoor events the above can be secured in the ground with "earth staples" or stakes...
for indoors...
Steve suggested to add a piece of PVC to the front of each "leg"...I will have to check on PVC fittings that incorporate all of the necessary tie ins...

This is the fabric just draped over the frame...

Right now the fabric is in the washing machine....to shrink it a bit and get out the sizing that fabric has when new and unwashed...

then I will sew sleeves into the top and bottom and will try to sew sleeves into the sides to tie the frame together...

once that is done...
scenes can be painted on the fabric using the same fabric paint we use to camo the Endor Commando pieces.....
and I also bought some permanent fabric markers for some of the detail work...

Lastly...I can sew up some fabric pouches with slings for each of the scenes so that each barricade can be broken down, slipped into the pouch/carrier and slung on your back....easy to carry with no tools needed....

so...

now to choose simple scenes to try to recreate on the canvas panels....
one from Hoth, Endor, and either Yavin or the hallway on the Tantive

After a trip to Home Depot (which of course didn't have all the PVC fittings I needed so I had to "make" some) and some work on the sewing machine...

All 3 frames are cut....
The Hoth and Endor frames are complete...
The Yavin just needs a couple fittings but is cut...

the Endor backdrop/canvas is done....
the Hoth backdrop/canvas is in production and should be complete by the end of the day...
Yavin or Tantive Hallway...don't have enough fabric and depending on what way we want to go will dictate fabric choice...

In this photo you can see the frame covered in ecru/natural fabric...
that is the Endor backdrop...
it is 4 feet wide and 40 inches tall...
it just has to be hemmed at the bottom...

The one behind it is the frame and fabric for Hoth...it is 4 feet wide and 54" tall

and the pieces on the floor in front are the Yavin/Tantive pieces which will end up 4 feet wide and 60" tall....
the pieces on the floor give you an idea of how the frame breaks down....
all with no tools...

Comments?

Suggestions??

Any artists want to take on a blank canvas?

I went out and purchased the last fittings needed for the 3rd frame but am not going to put any more time, effort or my own $$ into this if no one is interested...

I honestly haven't seen the training academy in person. I'm always doing something else so I didn't even know what the old props were like.

I'm just curious, those pipe legs... how do they stand in wind? Or when hit hard enough? Is there enough support?

And... what are they for? Lol.

I don't know how the heck I missed this thread all week...

Good idea, excellent implementation as always Phyllis. My question though is why do the themes? I think generic ones would be best like the one's Steve made. Generic with battle scars & weathering. But that's my two cents and its your project so do what you feel is best for it.

Too true...
I am mainly looking for suggestions to make them better and criticism....
or stuff like...
"hey dummy....that won't work because...."..
things that I didn't take into consideration...
or didn't think through properly...

For outdoor events like the Joliet Library where the game is set up on grass
...the intent was to add hooks for things like tent stakes...or maybe just drill holes for the stakes into the bottom pieces...
for indoor events....there is no concerns with wind and the barricades should be stable as I added caps to the end that make them more even...

As far as the scenes...
that was Steve's idea to add scenes from the movies...
I thought it was a good idea..

Would it be too difficult to create an alternate set of covers as well that feature the same scheme as the originals? That way, we can switch them as the situation warrents.

More variety means more playability and scenario options for the game...

Where did you get it from and how much did you use? I'd be willing to pick some up and, if you tell me how you sewed the other ones, I'll give a sewing machine a try...

I didn't paint them yet...
so I can paint them generic...

"camo" for any green planet like not only Endor but like the planet Felucia

"ice and snow" for not only Hoth but like the planet Ilum

and...

a black panel with maybe a starfield for "space" in general?

let me state the following first...

soapbox

Laughing

I have done this of my own accord based on the "high" produced by this game at C2E2 and the Joliet SWD events last year. I saw the incredible lines of children and parents waiting to play this game. I also appreciated the time, money, troopers and backbreaking effort it took to design, build, haul, set up, facilitate, tear down, and haul this game back out.
I am not seeking nor would I accept any kudos or $$ for this project. I did it because I interpreted the response by the public and by the members of both the MWG and NSB to be a positive one and something that members deemed they would like to see continue. I hope I did not miscalculate that response...but that is a possibility.

I have spent copious amounts of time and $$ on this project.....two things I seem to have little of these days
..and...again...I hope I have not miscalculated the importance of this project to both of the groups...

To give you an idea:

approx 6 yards of duck cloth @10.00 per yard
8 cans of Design Master paints @7.50 per can
3 - 10 foot lengths of 1/2" PVC @1.25 each
5 - 10 foot lengths of 1" PVC - @2.00 each
18 PVC fittings (some at over $3.00 each) and caps- some I had to custom make with grinding, screws, and hot glue.
3 pks of strapping @3.50 each
endless misc things...
endless amounts of time

I have tried to make them portable, self contained, and able to be assembled without tools....actually they are their own tool as you can use one of the "legs" with the cap on as a hammer....lol...

That being said....

I stopped on the way home from work last night and got the last fabric needed for both the 3rd barricade and the 3 stuff sacks I intend to sew to house and transport each barricade...

This weekend I will be home quite a bit so I plan on sewing the last sleeve, painting all 3 fabric sleeves and sewing the 3 stuff sacks/slings to haul each barricade around. A large sized adult should be able to haul at least two of these barricades in one shot.
I plan to finish this project this weekend.....the rest is up to you.

I will post photos of the finished products (hopefully) by Sunday...
Then this project gets packed up and sent off to whoever...

Hopefully, with the Thermal Detonator toss thingies that Beans brilliantly designed and executed...
and these barricades...
this game will continue and will evolve.

my work here is done....

I am adding a little something special to the black canvas though....
lol...

All three barracaides:

space....
the final frontier (sans a couple last touches)

all three in their handy-dandy carrying cases....

I can carry one on each shoulder easily.....
everything is contained in the carry bag...

So...

the rest is up to you folks...

my work here is done...
