yep....

First I used this tool to space the holes properly:

http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/department/Tools/8091-00.aspx

then I used an awl to punch the holes:

http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/search/searchresults/3318-01.aspx

and then used a leather needle...
and used the single needle approach:

One thing I have figured out is that a lot of the molding and casting stuff does not have a really long shelf life.

When I went to Reynolds last time I asked the guy there about some information on the different mold materials..
and he said that some of them deteriorate in less than a year...
using them or not...

and..

my own experience with the smooth cast liquid plastic I found that the gallon jugs that I bought started also to "get funny"...
the clearish yellow part A was turning cloudy...
the clear part B was getting thicker....

so...

last night was "casting night"....

I took what remained of those gallon smooth cast and started casting everything I had...
multiple times

so...
I now at least have a stockpile of stuff that will not deteriorate...

Very Happy

Gotta get back to my list of things to do cuz I added a few new ones...

Rolling Eyes

My list for myself...red = done

General Riekeen/Hoth Commander costume
Re-doing Hoth Trench Trooper gloves
Making gauntlets on Snowspeeder Pilot shorter
Mod Ethan's RFT Shirt
Making a 360 cast of X-Wing Pilot code cylinders
Prototype of Bespin Luke holster/belt and misc.
Adding fans to Gunner Helmet
Adding a good hard hat suspension system to Gunner Helmet
Adding motor and RC elements to make R2's dome turn
Complete re-work of TK...including complete paint job, new belt, some new fasteners, and yet more trimming.
Making a new/larger Hoth Trench Trooper wrist com sculpt and mold
Make a sculpt and mold of the HRS "hat comm".
Re-working the jacket for the Naboo Pilot - needs some finesse
Re-working part of the Naboo Pilot leather harness
Finding wider boots for the Naboo Pilot
Making a new Jedi tunic set
Making a sculpt and mold for Endor Wrist Comm
Finishing my new Endor Donut-my old one is a little big and starts to drop.

I did start a new holster for the Bespin Luke out of thicker leather..
but that is as far as I got....
I still have to soak it, shape it, dye it, sew it..
so I am not hardly started on that...

I also started some of the pieces of the Hoth Trench Trooper hat comm..they are cut and dry fitted...lots of sanding to do and other pieces to make.

so...gonna work on that stuff hopefully on Sunday...in between other errands...

Phyllis, you never cease to amaze me with all the things you do Mr. Green

I still have that scope to if you'd like to cast. Be nice to be able to make one of the most prominent scopes for blasters whenever we need Smile Now if I could just get a flash supressor too... Very Happy

I still need to loan you my pistol as well.

This is a costume I'd like to work on. Once I have a few extra bucks. I found someone that makes it for $200.

yesterday was a "wasted day"...
I was sick all day but managed to get a few things done in the early morning before I felt really bad..

I finished dying and stitching up the second Luke Bespin holster...this one turned out better than the prototype as I learned a few things making the first one....as is always the case...
I still have to put the "hangar" onto the holster...but that should be easier...
also..the stitches might be a bit far apart on this one...I had them way too close on the prototype...so I need to hit a happy medium on stitch length..
this is only the second holster I have ever made...so...not too bad...

I also worked on the Hoth hat comm...
gaaaaaaa...
slow work...

You can see the blocks of wood here when you look at the unpainted back...

and some "greeblies" on the top...mainly dowels...

I have to go back and look at some of the very small reference shots of this piece so I can finish up the sides...but there isn't much to go on...

the project pile has been haunting me....
all of the Tuesdays this month (which is my day off with 4-10 hour days) have been taken up with either volunteering with the crew from the Forest Preserve Dist of Will Co...and the only other Tuesday was the meeting with the "powers that be" for the Joliet Library SWD...
so..

today it was all about getting something done...

First I have been making my new sculpt of the Hoth Trench Trooper hat comm as shown above
....I finally finished the sculpt with the help of some pieces from an old motherboard...and I made my first mold of my sculpt...
it came out dismal....
I think I used too much mold release...
so...I cleaned up the sculpt and am trying again...

Next was back to the Bespin Luke holster project. Where I finished the part that holds the blaster...that ain't all to a holster...
it has to attach to the belt...

soooooo...

backside...
I did it like this to keep things from moving around

and

voila'

Next up is that round pouch that Luke has on his belt...

wet forming:

I am going to leave those pieces dry a few days...
the green box on the left is the Hoth Trench Trooper hat comm in the "soup"....the mold is drying...that will take most of the day as I used "Mold Master-slow"....
I wanted a slow cure to make sure that all of the bubbles were given a chance to rise...

Above post shows the wet forming of the cylindrical Bespin Luke pouch...

After dry...
I got this..

I had to cut the fold over part of the backing piece so that it had a curve...

and...since that leather is pretty thick I decided to skive the backside of that flap to make it more flexible...

After that was done...
I checked the fit

It is here that I began to argue with myself as to whether or not to dye the pieces first.....or to assemble and then dye...
I decided to assemble and then dye...

Next I had to address closing up the bottom...
didn't really know how to do that so...
I traced the opening at the bottom and made a template

then used the template to cut out a piece of leather...
and checked that fit

it fits "meh" but not too bad....

Next I had to mark and punch holes to stitch that piece in...
never have tried curved pieces....so the adventure began...

I used these little wheel thingies that Bob Kohn showed me...they come in a couple different sizes....

Utilizing Bob's procedure of punching every other hole...I chose my smallest wheel....and very carefully ran the wheel around the curved part of the bottom piece first
and then the bottom of the wet formed piece...

Next was to actually punch the holes...
I used an awl that I have various sized "blades" for...

and punched the holes in the bottom piece

For the record...
I have tried using one of these to stitch...and...well...
didn't really love it..
so I just used regular leather needles...

Well...
trying a curved needle...
broke the first one...but had a second one...

I can tell already that this will not go well...

No matter how I prepped and counted...somehow or another...the holes for this base part are off kilter

but...
onward and upward...
back to a straight needle to do the sides...

after stiching I used a little Barge cement on parts of the seams

Preparing for the snap at the top

Snap set

First coat of stain on...looks cr*ppy....
hopefully the second coat will make the piece look better

Will let the piece dry overnight before the second coat of stain

ok...
last coats of stain are on the piece...
still does not look really good...still blotchy...

and this is the pouch with the blaster and holster:

The round pouch came out rather terrible. Usually I come away from a first attempt/prototype with solid ideas on how to make it better....this time...
I got nothin....

Today it was on to some of the other pouches....

There is one tall pouch and two almost square pouches...

first had to make a pattern...and...again
I am guessing as to the size. I had PM'd someone at the MWG who posted a FB photo of a similar project asking for dimensions...or if they found a tutorial..and..the pm was opened but the person never replied to me....
so...
guesswork it is...

the tall pouch

the smaller square pouch

wet forming both pouches...

leaving them to dry now.....
and hopefully they will be dry enough to stitch up tomorrow at the armor party...

Put away the leatherworking...I am done with all of the pouches for the Bespin Luke... but am at a standstill because I need dye and that can't be shipped in freezing temperatures...so....
I have to wait till either the weather warms or when I have a day to go up to Elgin...

so...
it is eyes to the Joliet Library Star Wars Day event and the need to make a second set of some Rebel headgear...
A second Hoth Trench Trooper hat
and
second full set of Endor Commando headgear pieces

I found that second set of goggles in the photo below that are really a better color than my current HRS goggles...
and am sewing the piece to attach the hat comm to...
I re-made a new hat comm ....so the HRS project is almost done...

the ERS is pretty much a scratch build...
sigh...
everything needs doing on that...at least I have a donut to cut...
I am trying to win a second real AN H-15 on e-bay...not so much for the fabric part but for the ear caps. Sewing an ANH from scratch isn't bad...it is just earcaps. I don't like the all plastic ones that used to come with the old Endor kits. When I made Crix's, I made those out of felt and fabric...and they were not easy to do...
so....I think I will go back to trying to get an ANH...BUT...I am going to paritially disassemble the real ANH in order to incorporate the hat bill into the ANH rather than affix it to the donut. I like the look of Crix's ....and I sewed that one with the hat bill directly on the soft ANH part.

ohmigod...

I finally pulled out the General Riekeen/Hoth Echo Base Commander project again today...

I haven't worked on this since May of last year....

I had to go back several pages of this thread to even find the last time I worked on it...
and..
wow...
looked at all the projects that I have gone through since I last looked at this costume.

Since it has been so long since I looked at it
I had to spend quite a bit of time reviewing the entire thing...
what my next step needed to be...etc..

So today I finished the small loop that the upper pocket tabs go in and next I decided I should address the crazy poofy collar...

I found that the pattern pieces I had cut in May were wrong...and had to re-cut. These collar pieces are just "fly by the seat of your pants" and experiment around. I used fiberfill instead of batting...and I am thinking that might be a mistake...

the collar is partially on...
but...I need to walk away for a time and re-think...

anyway...
this is how it sits now:
