I've started this costume and I'm hoping to have it finished in a month or so.

Today I've made the shirt. Considering that I've never sewn a shirt before I'm quite happy with the result. I used a pattern from a sewing magazine that I didn't have to alter, except for cutting off the full length sleeves. For the pockets I used Vera's tutorial.

Ignore the bad fit, I pinned it to my sister's dressform and she's an XS compared to my L. The sleeves look long, but when I bend them they reach just to my elbow. I have not added snaps to it yet, I didn't have any at home, so I know that it should close R over left and not like it's now. It also isn't hemmed since I want to make the pants first to see how much I can cut off in order to tuck as little as possible into them.

I can also see that one of the pockets have puffed up so I will probably need to tack it down to make it keep its shape.

Is the belt and belt slide ok for this costume? I bought it for when I want to make an Endor trooper, but it would be nice if I could use it for this costume as well.

Good start!

As far as the belt buckle, I'm sure one our judges can give some guidance on that.

First test with most of the parts.

I think I'm going to try and take in the trousers a bit more.

My sister helped me to style the wig, here's the backside of it.

Now I need to make a holster and two pouches for the belt, and a rank badge.

Looking good. Be careful with the wig, some of the wig cap can be seen. See if you can loosen the hair a bit there and get it to cover the cap again.

If loosening it doesn't work, you could try weaving in some extensions to cover it.

That actually would be ideal.

I have some extra hair so I will try and weave it in.

I added more hair yesterday, I also undid the styling. I think I'm going to get the best result by simply pinning the braids up every time I wear it. My plan now is to do the four braids in advance and use them for the "bun" in the back. I'm then going to make two loose braids that I attach to the base of the neck and wrap around the head. A bit more work when I'm using it, but I think in the end it will look so much better.

I'm hoping to be able to send in approval photos later today.

At the Salvation's Army's second hand store in town. They don't have the brown heel, but until I find a perfect pair these will do fine. They also cost a fraction of a new pair of boots.

Haha! I love the second hand stores around here! Goodwill is a great place to find some tough to find things sometimes, but you gotta get there right at the right moment.

Could you maybe paint the heel brown until you got something better?

That's a good idea, I might do that if I can find a way to get the paint to look like wood and not just brown paint.

That's actually simple:
Get two shades of brown paint; one a bit darker (or lighter, depending which one you look at Wink ) than the other.
Paint the heels completely with the *darker* paint first.
When that layer of paint has dried, using a smaller brush and just a bit of paint, add 'wood swirls' with the lighter paint over the dark paint layer.
You can also 'smudge' the "wood swirls" a bit.

Practice on, say, a piece of carton first; but once you got the hang of it, it's considerably simple to fake wood using just two shades of paint Smile

If my explanation sounds weird I can also take a few pics of how I "paint" wood, if you want me to.
