Does anyone know who makes an exceptional version of the Hoth Trooper costume? The sewn parts specifically. Very interested.

Finally found some 100% cotton fabric that will work for the jacket and hat (Yay!).

What has everyone used for the belt?

And the gaiters look like they're a lighter color than the pants. Does everyone use a darker tan? I think I'm going to go with a lighter tan/khaki color.

initially, I made the belt out of the same fabric I made the vest out of...
even sewed in the three parallel lines..

the problem was that in the real world...
that belt didn't hold up well
nor
hold things up well ...there is actually a lot of "stuff" that ends up on the belt...

so I made a second belt from an Italian Policeman's belt...
which is a heavy, white nylon number..

what I should probably do is to make a fabric "cover" over my current nylon strapping one...

Truth.

This is one of the pains in the posterior about this costume. I think I got a white parade belt, but also built a white cover to go over a surplus web duty belt. The belt needs to be heavy duty because you attach the vest to it. If you attach the backpack to the vest, then it pulls on the belt even more.

My chest greeblies came in from Richies, so I'll be working on those this week.

This weekend, a friend and myself were working on the vest and the hat (which is a royal pain), but also discovered something interesting . . . the quilted, tan-colored yoke of the jacket only covers the shoulders: it doesn't extend all the way across the chest.

I am trying to find those photos of the original Hoth Hat that was photographed...because I think what you are looking at was an additional piece on the hat ....
that had a piece to cover the mouth (probably when standing around waiting for filming) and would hang down in front...
that piece was probably tucked in the front there during filming...

Most of the troopers have scarves on..

or that piece in front..
so it is difficult to say what the actual jacket looks like by itself.

The trooper in the picture has a brown scarf on his right side (our left, viewing it).

Here's an item description on a film used hat, http://www.screenused.com/index.cfm?sectionID=item-detail&subsectionID=index.cfm&item_id=5300

I haven't seen pictures of troopers using anything but a scarf to cover their mouth/face, but that doesn't mean a photo doesn't exist. Smile

no...not that hat..

that was a hat sold at auction..

The photos I am speaking of are photos taken by members of the Wampas Cave when they got a chance to handle a hat that was in a case in the lobby of the hotel in Finse where the movie was filmed..
there was an additonal piece to that hat that was never seen on screen but existed on the hat used by the extras..

there was a thread here called "Real Hoth Hat" that I can't find now..
photos were posted there...

I am pretty sure I have those photos stashed on my home computer...
I will have to look for them.

Good find.

Another picture that supports my claim- which I cannot find online, so I'll have to scan it- is on the Tauntaun page in the SW Visual Dictionary. If you look at the Hoth Trooper sitting on the Tauntaun, he's turned towards the camera. He isn't wearing the vest, but the jacket is the same as the Trench Trooper and the yoke ends at his shoulders, too.

A quick color sampling of the quilted section versus the center. Notice the lack of quilting. There isn't any indication of the mouth cover being used on this trooper, either.

It is really difficult to say...
one of the things that to me seems missing is some kind of seam up front there on those non quilted pieces....

It looks to me as though they are just some sort of "dickie"..

dunno...
I really don't have an answer for you ...

Not really trying to tip the boat on any of this, but just posting some observations. I think the jacket is more of a parka than a true jacket. There aren't visible seams and/or zippers, so the idea of slipping it on instead of a front opening- like a jacket- seems quite possible.
