I've finished a set of teeth/gums for my mechanical Chewbacca mask. I cast them saturday and demolded them sunday and they smell extremely ripe! Like taking a good whiff off the monomer straight out of the bottle, yet it has been curing for over twelve hours.

I have some reject parts that I cast last week that also still smell pretty strong.

Temperature around here is in the 40's Fahrenheit at neight and up to 70 or 80 during the day.

It's my understanding that this should be fully cured in less than an hour.

Any idea why this might be occurring? Thanks

Not a clue but try taking a reject part and soaking it in mouthwash or some denture tablets. And see if that helps

Wookiewannabe, what brand/type of dental acrylic did you use?

This is very possible if for some reason one of your chemicals went past its shelf life... or was simply bad.

This was simply because I mixed way too much monomer with the polymer. I soaked it in got water and the smell was gone.

Matt, did you use the basic dental acrylic white powder and monomer? If so did you mix it separately and pour it into your mold? Or did you actually sculpt teeth with it? I watched the Stan Winston video and it looks like she mixes it and pours it in. Having never worked with dental acrylic, I was wondering about the process.

I mixed it and poured it in. I used the monster makers acrylic. The teeth are the medium shade. In the future I might try pressure casting it as many have recommended this.

Arnold from monster makers recommends 2 parts powder polymer to one part liquid monomer. Others have recommended 1:1. In my initial castings I used a ton more monomer than necessary. After the cast is out I drop it in a bucket of hot water. The technique in the stan winston video is almost exactly what I did, except that I sculpted on my foam underskull instead of a dental casting. Also the acrylic I am using is more rigid than the flexicryl she uses, since hers are for wearing in the mouth.
