Wiring seems good, strongly soldered with heatshrink over joins. I'm not sure if it is a wiring issue, but the only thing I've had to say that may be bad is that my daughter's purple initiate blade loses the purple quickly, spends most of it's battery life looking pink before going red. I think that means there may be a problem with the wiring to the blue LED.

Below is a comparison shot I took of the ultra wiring to a toy Saber.

When Ultra refused to acknowledge the issue and accept fault, followed by cutting off communication, i ended up taking apart the sabers myself, and found an absolute mess... hotglue and bad wiring, and poor insulation everywhere...

Basically if you have no choices left, taking it apart may be your only solution.. tutorials can easily be found on thecustomsabershop forums by way of a simple search, but just go slow and be careful to follow the tutorials exactly.

Send it back! They cost enough without having to rewire them yourself.

Thats a power issue. Since he takes shortcuts, not enough current are getting to the right dies to maintain the balance...

If you want the best purple mix out there, seek vadersvault.. They have never had an issue with their purples.

Well, it's for my daughter, so I don't want to spend any more money on it. I'm happy to play with a bit of soldering and rewire it, if that is the issue. Any idea where I could find a tutorial to do so, though?

The custom saber shop forums should be your best bet...

Maintenance time. Last training session we managed to crack a couple of blades near the tip.

First we carefully cut the polycarbonate with a sharp saw.

Then we cut the film with a scalpel.

Before sanding the end with a coarse then fine grit sandpaper.

Unrolled, the film was about three meters long!

Finally we reglued the tip and taped it.

Ready for battle, about 5cm shorter but much better than broken! An unexpected benefit, Foxtom says it fits in his car better now... Wink

Hey just a heads up, not sure what you glued the tip on with but I'd be going with a two part epoxy. Those tips have a real tendency to fly off. Even with superglue. (Superglue can also react with the tip/blade, making them 'cloudy')

Alcfalath right about TCSS too. Great quality products, but if your just looking to learn the forums there are a goldmine. Wiring schematics, space requirements, parts discussions; the whole nine yards. As far as soldering tutorials go, Erv's got a pretty good one on his site, plecterlabs.com. He makes a lot of the higher end saber boards. There's also FX-sabers.com.

Hope some of that helps.

I just use a Dremel Cutting wheel to cut my blades. With it set to a high speed it not only cleanly cuts through the polycarbonate, but like a lightsaber cauterizing a wound. The high speed of the wheel melts it's way through the film. The resulting cut is nice clean and quick, and a blast of air through the tube removes any plastic dust that makes it inside. Also, whilst cutting, it helps to have a Vacuum under where you cut to help remove the dust and keep most of it from getting into the tube.

I wanted to use my dremel but Foxtom overruled the idea, as he reckons that the saw has a straighter cut. Thanks for the ideas, I'll try them next time.

Last night there was a very positive ruling from the Captain of the Guard, Erich, in a thread called lightsaber fights. There has been a lot of discussion recently about Saber fighting in its various forms putting the charter at risk.

AdamScottFM wrote:
Had this question come up four times on three continents in the last two weeks. Fun juxtaposition.

When we were originally handed down the word from Lucasfilm, the statement was "no dueling." It was later clarified by Steve Sansweet to mean "no dueling with the public." We're adults. If we want to smack each other with glowy sticks, that's our business.

Until the point that someone gets hurt.

So here it is. Dueling, performances, exhibitions. However you want to call them, they're allowed. *Within* the Rebel Legion purview, because there's nothing in the Charter that says "no.". But it must be done with the oversight of the Base Command/event organizers.

If you're an outside organization looking to perform, it's on your organization to secure whatever rights, insurance, etc. your local statutes require to do your show. But if Base Command feels that what you're proposing is dangerous, and you're invited as a guest by the RL, they can request alteration to something safer. And if you refuse, they can pull your organization's invite. The RL doesn't *have* to extend an invitation to other fan organizations, but it's seen as the proper thing to do under the umbrella of shared fandom and cooperation... Until that organization endangers our ability to play plastic spaceman, then cooperation goes away until that organization is willing to abide by the decisions made by their local Command.

I will back the decision to discontinue a relationship with another organization of any Base Commander who proves to me that said organization's demonstration may be detrimental to the values of the Rebel Legion and/or the safety of the public.

I may have to re-edit this tomorrow for clarity, so feel free to ask any questions you need to so I can cover it. But in the meantime, it's 4:30 in the morning, and I'm going to sleep.

Sydney Saber Arena has never duelled or put at risk a member of the public, and has always had a firm policy of only fighting others trained in the same style of fighting. We have our own liability insurance including both public damages and personal injury, and we have three nurses among our members with first aid equipment at all training sessions. Safety has always been a primary focus of SSA. As such, this ruling is a very comforting and positive development for us, as concerns raised that Saber combat puts the charter at risk have been laid to rest.

Fyr's pouch workshop.

Swiv's original on the left, with a finished copy next to it and a WIP above it.
These first two copies will be Foxtom's pouches.

On the right, four more blanks cut out for the group.

How hard is leather work? Just out of curiosity. And those pouches are awesome!
