Thanks again everyone.

Tan'mar, I'll provide what help I can, though I wouldn't feel comfortable dipping someone else's work in acid. One thing I strongly recommend is to do several test pieces to get a feel for the strength of the acid and durability of the resist. What are you thinking of doing?

What I want one word on each saber. They are: Ori'vod and Vod'ika. Click on the links, in RED, to see what I want.

Update time!

Even though I had the saber functioning at CVI, the electronics had a couple of serious issues. First, my attempt to do a custom sound scheme for my wife (which was beyond anything that the "commercial" cards could handle on their own) failed miserably and the result was that Holly had no sound. Second, as CVI progressed, the LEDs continued to get dimmer as the transistor array I was using fried.

I've now completed a complete rebuild of the electronics. The initial version had a small connector tube that was intended to be a sound chamber, and the remainder of the electronics/batteries slid into either side of the hilt. The new version has a full stainless steel chassis that holds batteries, electronics, speaker, and crystal.

To get everything to fit (Nano Biscotte, Arduino Pro Mini, transistor array, and three constant current LED drivers + extras) I needed to etch a couple of PCBs.

After waaay too much wiring/soldering, everything was in place and working.

Here's a quick video (though I apologize for the quality) showing "Moon River" playing when the NB/Arduino are brought out of deep sleep, "Indiana Jones Theme" leading into the ignition sound, and Toto's "Africa" leading into the retraction sound.

I guess there's now a saber subforum... not sure if this could be moved there.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Mel, it was great meeting you as well.

I'm happy to say that I now consider Holly to be "complete". It took a good amount of fiddling to get everything into the hilt, but I finally managed in time for MegaCon. Everything looked good on the first day, but I had an issue with the Arduino code where the sound and LEDs kept getting out of sync (not a big deal since we spent most of the time with the sound off). That night I was able to fix the code and she worked perfectly on Saturday and Sunday.

I haven't recharged the batteries since Saturday night, and the saber still seems to have plenty of power, so the deep-sleep-while-off code that I added must be working. Smile

The blades are much brighter with the current version of the electronics than they were at C6. Friday night my wife took some jeweled tape and added some decorations to the base of each blade. At first I thought it was a bit crazy, but I'll admit that it was a fun touch that looked quite good walking around the convention (she still has a plain set of blades). I'll try to get some pics of that soon.

Unbelievable work. That is truly a work of art and you are very talented. I don't think it could have come out much better.

I'd just like to gently poke you about pictures of the jeweled tape blades Smile The saber looks amazing, I'll have to read some more about acid etching. So many new possibilities!

Thank you for the reminder! Here are a few comparison pics of the different blades, though this isn't my wife's saber (batteries are dead). The top two are here jeweled blades with the saber off and on. The bottom two are the clear Polycarbonate blades with gift wrap that I used for my saber, again, both off and on.
