good idea...I have to take that apart anyway..the straps are too long for Scott..

I also had an idea to hide some nylon strapping inside the fabric I made those straps from...give them strength as well..

thanks...
keep the suggestions coming..

Very Happy

I need to work on the mini flares still. I can bring them along to Bartlett.
I didn't like having the ejection straps attached to the vest, they kept dragging it down.
Perhaps they could be attached to the belt.
I liked Johann's suggestion to use that circular foam to make the hose.
I want to keep it as lightweight and flexible as possible. If you could make the sleeve
We could insert the foam afterwards.
I'm going to finish the belly tube today, just need to figure out a connector to use to attach the hose to the vest.

Scott, attach the leg strap to your flightsuit. I use big safety pins for my xwing (its screen accurate! lol) That might work better for you.

I'm sorry, I have to admit I'm not super up on the ywing pilot to give much advice yet. I need to research it a bit and I'll get back to you all.

Sure lol. I'd make sure you have a bunch though because I tend to bend the heck out of them during events, especially the ones on my back, which you won't have with your costume. Lucky.

use a pvc elbow on the end of the hose and glue an earth magnet into it...... I can sew a small pocket with the other earth magnet to the back of the vest where you want the hose to attach to...
and..
the hose will hold to the vest like magic...

I have done that with my X-Wing...one magnet in the elbow at the hose end..the other magnet is sewn into a small pocket into my flightsuit...

If the flak vest is dragging down, stick some heavy duty Velcro onto the shoulders of the vest and coveralls, and that'll help keep it in place. I had to do that with my B-wing pilot flak vest because the chestbox connects to the vest, so it weighs it down as I walk. I put some Velcro on the shoulders and haven't had a problem since.

I also have Velcro on the belt to keep it in place ('cause the belt keeps sliding off).

ok...
after a really good "road test" by Scott...I have the vest back for some modifications...

I removed two inches from the straps as they were too long...
and...while I had the back portion of the vest removed I did a couple things...

I cut a piece of abs the same shape as that hexagon piece where the straps meet...and tucked it in to help that piece keep its shape
(the photos are a little blurry)

another thing I did to help the straps keep their shape (cotton always stretches) was to open up the seams on the straps and add in 1 1/2 inch cotton web strapping in there...

....
then I sewed it all back up again...
I think it should hold its shape better.....

Next up is sewing a small pocket containing an earth magnet to the back of the vest to where the hose will be placed...with an elbow on the hose with the other magnet...it should keep the hose attached...

and...
then the mini-flares...with the belt on Scott...I was able to measure where he wanted them...his will be more on the side of his body rather than at the front buckle....

ok Scott...

upgrades are all done...

In addition to the mods I did in the post above...
I sewed a pocket with a magnet on the back of the vest...
and included the other earth magnet for your hose end...

I also did some stitching around the holes that were put in for the chest box...

and...

here is the mini-flares on the belt...

again...
dowel is 3/8" (I would suggest buying the ones that are NOT oak....the oak dowels are tough to sand and also to get a thumb tack into from the back....see below) and is cut to 2 1/4" with the ends rounded and painted silver...
I have a couple of my "template" dowels in the sleeve so you can see...

When you put the dowels in the sleeves...and remember...you don't have to fill all the "sleeeves"....they will fit kind of snug...
but so that you don't lose them...
insert the dowel into the sleeve...
and from behind...put a thumbtack in to hold it in place...I had some extra white thumbtacks...so they are included in the mailer...

Before I ship it...

is there anything else I was supposed to do?
my brain was a little scrambled after the "Death March" on Sunday..

Laughing

This whole running your own Electrical contracting firm as a one man operation is mighty taxing. I've been busy to say the least.
I had time, or I MADE time to go over to Kristals house the other night and she helped me out with the fabric hose covering. It looks great.
I was going to look for some kind of fitting to use for the end that gets the magnet Phyliss provided but forgot so I went through my spare parts and found a bunch of old antifreeze flushing tees. I bet the DNR would get about ten calls if I dumped my antifreeze in the street nowadays! The grey one was a perfect fit and the right color! The magnet is glued in now and the foam rope inside the hose is glued up into the pipe.

I made up a bunch of the mini flares and hit them with some sanding sealer. They are ready for paint now.
I intend to finish this thing by CVI even if I can't go now. Confused

I've been busy battling Quick books today. The stupidity of my problem was incredible. I had the number lock button on. Yep, that's it. I'm so bad with computers.
Anyhow,
I just need to assemble the belly box and I'm going to take some pics this week.
Here are a few pics.
Someday I might have these mini flares made for me from aluminum but for now these dowels look pretty good. I painted them by gluing them to a dowel with hot melt glue.

Here is where I started with the belly box. It's actually a chunk of BT70 Estes rocket body tubing. I figured out by dumb luck that the round (bottom half) of a plastic Easter egg fit's it perfectly. Amazing how spare rocket parts can come in handy like this. I'm installing three push on-off switches in the face of the box. They light up and I have a little surprise in store for all the kids that like to push buttons. Just wait...

Very nice work and a great find on the rocket parts/ easter eggs.

Thats what I nearly like most on that hobby - working with cheap materials and creating something....WOW!

Good luck for your work!

looks amazing Scott...
and...the mini flares look great...
I see no need to replace them with aluminum...
and..
lol...
I too have a box with "junk" that I look at and say "I might have a use for that"...
and
sometimes...
those odds, ends and junk come in handy...

Well, a costume is never really finished but approvable.
I hope I can say that.
Wrapped up my super duper belly box tonight and attached the hose to it.
Those magnets are going to work just great!
Pics for submission Thursday.
General Horton Salm will be reporting for duty.
Maybe I should change my sign on to reflect that? EH? Cool
