Ok...since it is raining out...which eliminated some of my morning chores...
I have spent a few hours on the following...
after a few attempts (and still not right)...

the dark gray is the Hoth Tech hat...and the light item on the right is Hoth underhelmet prototype 6....lol...
re-inventing the wheel is a tedious and time consuming task...

done in a lighter twill instead of Khaki Trigger...btw...

I also tried to make the top two sections wider in an effort to bring down the seam of the earcap a little...but then that starts to throw everything else off..

Jim also needed it longer in the back...too long now maybe...but can be taken up...

I eliminated the ear holes on the sides where one would normally see the hard plastic ear caps on an ANH and tried to make a new "hem" for those sides that don't exist on an ANH-15

next...

as I looked at all of this again...

and found that the curve of the ANH at the back it too pronounced...
I will probably have to take some of the "curve" out of the back of the new pattern I am drafting...

sigh...

then...

I went back to the start...
and found myself drawn back to the RAF E type helmet...

and looked at this photo again...

my conclusion?

I am leaning toward the RAF E-type helmet...

You know, Phyllis, I'm actually leaning toward believing that the soft helmets aren't all the same on everyone. If you look at the briefing scene, there seems to be some differences...I don't think it's worth too much stress over seams. Just make it look good. Wink

yeah I agree with that, especially when it comes to the ear padding, they all seem to be different.

And you're right, it is based off the RAF helmet, but they're not easy to find, especially in the US, nor are they cheap. That's why I went with trying to base it off of something that is easily available, especially with there being a ready made pattern for something that's pretty similar.

Upon looking at the screen captures again...and talking to Jim..
there appears to be indeed at least 3 different underhelmets...

some are more angular...some are not...

some have gigantic earcap bulge....some are barely visible....if there at all..

and some are longer to where they fasten under the chin...and some barely hit the jawbone..

so...
at any rate..
this is Jim's finished underhelmet..

his is less angular....has a small earcap bulge....and fastens at just about the jawline...

Of course...since I don't have a real wig stand/head...you can's see the bulge of the earcaps unless it is actually on a head...lol...

ready to pick up at some point this upcoming week Jim...
unless you are headed to the Joliet Jackhammer event coming up...I can bring it along there if you are signed up for the event....

For now it should be good to go for CV....
I am still a little "iffy" on the sides though...

Just wondering, has anyone thought about modifiying a water polo cap?

Sooooo I found this farting around on ebay today...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sikorsky-Embroidered-Skull-Cap-Inner-Flight-Helmet-/260962251697?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D261006994724%26ps%3D54

It definitely needs the embroidery picked out, but I think this might be a key to an easy to find skullcap. Maybe even something to base a pattern off of. I picked one up and I'll post more when I get it.
