I'll be starting a Tusken female later in the year to hopefully be finished over Xmas/New Year 2013. I'm starting to look for and gather bits and pieces so I have everything ready.

Monks cloth seems to be difficult to find or expensive in the UK, so I was wondering if hessian would do for the outer burka/shawl? It might be a bit thin, so I could double-up the strips of material?

Hessian fabric

If hessian won't do, then I can try and get the Monks cloth from Joanns whilst I'm over for CVI.

I've seen muslin mentioned for the inner dress and arm wraps, so would this be ok?:

Muslin fabric

Any advice would be appreciated!

Well, since advice on the material seems to be scarce, does anyone have any comments on the metal 'colour':

The bracelet in the background is how I bought it, so I'm not sure whether the bracelet is the colour to follow? There seems to be all sorts of variations, from gold, through to browny-bronze, so any help would be appreciated!

Had a play with the painting on the 'metal' parts.
1. Spraypaint, with a layer of grey paint on the top, then dry rubbed off, then a light rub of green
2. Spraypaint with a layer of the green paint, then rubbed off
3. Bronze coloured paint on top of the spraypaint, dry-rubbed off, then some grey paint dry-rubbed off to make it dirty.
4. Bronze coloured paint on top of the spraypaint, then some grey paint dry-rubbed off to make it dirty.
I quite like how 3 has turned out...?

I like #3... It looks like the right color, with a visible patina starting. Very similar to how my Wife's came out. Wink

Very nicely "weathered".

Suzi, I'm sorry. I never saw this thread.

The fabric you posted looks to be like what we call burlap. I'm concerned that it would be excessively itchy to you. If you can't find Monk's cloth for a reasonable price I'd recommend going with a linen. I'll be making a new shawl/burka out of linen because the monks cloth is just so darned hot!

As for your test colors, I like #4 the best. And bravo! Good job on the paint job.

Thanks both!

So, it seems the bronze colour is the way to go with this, rather than the gold.

Yeah, the burlap would probably be too itchy (a bit like wearing a sack cloth). Nordic Needle deliver to the UK, so that might be the best bet for the monks cloth (since Joanns don't do int'l shipping).

Resurrecting this topic as I'll be working on it this year.

I've gathered all of the parts and now I just need to start building, which I plan to do over Xmas and New Year, then submit for clearance with 501st and RL. I’ve done little bits and pieces over the past year, but will be working on it properly at Xmas.

Here are a few pics from actual SW references:

Mask:

I bought the mask and bracelets from a US RL member last year (Darthair). They're in kit form, so I've made progress in putting them together:

Face bit (front view):

Face bit (inside view):

Dangly bits:

Put the face and dangly bits together (that square on the l/hand side is white textured plastic for the strips of bone which join across):

And how it should end up looking:

The colour of the mask seems to vary, from goldy through to a really dark brown, so I'm opting for the more brassy colour. I have black primer, 'Brass' spray paint for the main colour and I might try and add a bit of the darker metallic brown (will see how it looks). I also have some green to do the copper rusting affect:

Bracelets:

On my hairy arms:

Sprayed the mask/dangly bits with black undercoat:

Couple of coats of the 'Brass' spray paint (pre- weathered!):

Copper paint on one of the pieces:

Dabbed the green paint on:

Dry-rubbed off:

All of the pieces, including the bracelets:

Managed to have a look at a UKG members' mask set-up last year and I'll try and go for the same method. This means the 'bib' part of the mask will be detachable and secured with pop-studs.

Getting the width of the material for below the mask:

Sticking the Monks cloth to the edge of the mask around the top of the head:

On my noggin. It's a bit bulky at the back 'cos of my hair. I'll wear a bandana to flatten it down:

Cheap long sleeve top (£3.50) which I can wear under the 'dress' and I can bind some bandages around the arms:

Bag from Camden Market:

Made the bone out of Sculpey:

I'll give it a wash over to make it more bone coloured. Then I’ll poke a couple of holes in the bag and attach the bone with string to secure it to the front of the bag.

Boots:
Bought some cheap (£10) boots off Fleabay. I'll take off the beads/thread and use that on the gaffi stick for a bit of decoration:

Glued a base layer of wrapping on the boots (used the 'cohesive' bandages as the base layer but I don't think they really look right). You can also see how the gloves/bandages have dried out:

Tbh, I think cotton or hessian material will probably work fine for the boot wrapping, so I'll use that.

Stuck a few strips on the boots:

I've added some more layers since the pic below:

Inner dress:

Dust sheet to be used for the inner dress:

I haven’t made this yet, but if there is any left over material, perhaps I can use that for the arm wrappings?

Shawl:

Bought Monks Cloth from Nordic Needle.

I won't be doing anything with it until I've at least done a practice run with spare cloth!

What better way to spend Xmas Day, avoiding awkward family silences and listening to my Gran whinge about the same crap as she does every year, than get back onto building my Tuskette!

Done a mock-up of the shawl with some scrap material.

Drew out the basic shape:

Drew on the lines for each strip of material:

Cut out the strips:

Then back to the sewing machine and sewed the strips together, then sewed down the seam at the middle of the back, so it ends up like this:

The hood and shawl are one piece. The baseball cap will sit over the hood and have the mask attached to it:

I think it could do with the bottom strip taken off as it's too long, so that's easily fixed.

Is the above heading in the right direction?

Looks good, I would prob remove the bottom strip, because you don't want to step back and end up tripping on it.
