After completing the Lockport Library Star Wars Day event in the morning, participants moved on to the Crest Hill Library which is not too far away.
The Lockport participants were joined at Crest Hill by Mark Berry who came in from Pekin to help with the cable tv filming at the Joliet Library and since that event wrapped up in a timely manner, he was able to join us.

The Crest Hill Library had games like Lightsaber training and Star Wars trivia and had refreshments for all the participants. After an hour spent with us, all of the event goers were treated to a screening of the DVD BluRay of "A New Hope".

Many thanks to our participants!

Robert Hamilton - 9295 - X-Wing Pilot
Andrew Marsh - 2079 - AT-AT Driver (and X-Wing Pilot)
Crix Turner - 4913 - Stormtrooer (and X-Wing Pilot)
Tara Turner - Renegade Squad - Rebel Fleet Trooper
Mark Berry - 4265 - Biker Scout - Midwest Garrison
and myself
Phyllis Schulte - 1951 - Jedi (and...yes...X-Wing Pilot)

Mark had a very lively discussion with one of his fans about Star Wars...

some of the guests...

Suiting up...

and a good time was had by all...

Each December since 2004 (I think) our members have participated in a Toy Con Toy Show that benefits Children's Treasure Chest for Pediatric Oncology. This year marks ToyCon's 20th year in existance and all 4 toy shows this year will have a special theme. Today's show was a special "Star Wars" event and we were asked if we could participate in the May show.

Many thanks to:
Vince - 7596
and
Ed - 4438
who joined me - Phyllis 1951
to help Toy Con celebrate 20 years and the remarkable toys of Star Wars.

We were there for about 2 hours and just walked around talking to vendors...
and of course..

looking at LOTS of great toys..

Mission Report filed:

It took only two short years and this event outgrew the historic and large innards of the Joliet Public Library - so we took it to the streets. After the City of Joliet found out that Star Wars Day #2 brought over 1,500 people through the doors of the Joliet Main Library last year, they decided that this event had merit.

The City blocked off a street and gave us an entire building across the street from the Library to use for staging and tote storage. They also cooked and served breakfast and lunch for all participants.

Nar Shaddaa Base, The Midwest Garrison, the Midwest Order of The Jedi Assembly and the Midwest R2 Builders were on hand to be the "set decoration", run some of the events, put together a monster display of costumes...
answer questions....

what we are...
and how we do it...

We didn't disappoint...

We ran Imperial Cadet Training on the front lawn...

Operated a Jail and Bail to benefit the Friends of the Library...

Hung out with friends of the Rebellion..

We also had Klingon's doing the celebration song from the final scenes of ROTJ...

http://s1099.photobucket.com/albums/g395/MidwestGarrison/2012%2006-02%20Joliet%20Public%20Library/?action=view&current=MVI_2988.mp4

The Library Staff had been busy the last months making a Wampa...

A Trash compactor Dive

Along with many more games and trivia...at last we checked....well over 600 people did the trivia challenge...

The Library staff also repaired and re-set our Cantina bar...
a lot of elbows hit that bar during the day...

But...after the doors closed to the public...
there was a special sparkling grape juice toast to Dave Dorman (who was in attendance all day) for his 25 years as a Star Wars Artist..

Jim Norman - IAM8114 (Emperor of Nar Shaddaa Base) awarded Roger Burns - Youth Services Director/Joliet Public Library with his very own Medal of Yavin for the extraordinary work done by him and his staff...

This was an big event...
a lot of big work...
but also brought big smiles to the people of the area...

Many, many, many more photos:

This was the 10th year that members of both Nar Shaddaa Base and the Midwest Garrison have done the "Death March" in Bartlett IL for their 4th of July Parade.

Traditionally, this parade seems to take place on the hottest day of the year, but this year we caught a brake. The day before was in the 100's, but a cool front came through hours before we were set to stage for the parade and we ended up with highs in the mid 80's....it was still not...but nothing like the days prior.

This photo shows the many faces of Nar Shaddaa....even though not everyone in the photo is wearing a Rebel costume, they are still all present and one or two future members of the Base.

Yes....even Darth Vader himself is also a Rebel Fleet Trooper and part of Renegade Squad.

Thanks to all of our Rebels who came out..
and for the family of Steve Mamman who marched bravely for 2 miles carrying our banner...

We marched behind this group of unknowns....lol...

Some favorite photos from the parade:

Found out yesterday that the groups received a $450.00 donation from the parade organizers for our participation in this event...
the $$ will be going to the Pediatric Tumor Foundation..

and

each year forward, we will receive a donation if we show up.

We have been told by many that a lot of people come to this parade just to see us.

The Rebels have always participated in this event, but were usually busy with marshmallow wrangling...

BUT

This year Nar Shaddaa Base stayed in formation...
in addition to having both 2 Endor Troopers (Dave and Crix), we also had two RFT's (Augie and me)...
thankfully also we had Steve in X-Wing...probably one of THE most recognizeable non face costumes..

we had a couple of Jedi...
Patrick and Greg..

and also this year we had some great face characters (which is huge for us down here in IL)

in Janine Jender as Leia,
Conor Markle (future recruit) as Luke,
Mike Olsen as Obi-Wan,
Samantha Scholl as Arena Padme,

and for a time we had Chris Schwarz as Anakin...
so...

Also...

BIG TIME great was having Darryl Sorensen (wearing RFT) and crew..
and his buddy R2 S5 in their awesome painted vehicle hauling an equally great trailer ...

for the first time...
we had people along the parade route cheering for the Rebellion..

We also had lots of other members helping out in varios capacities...

Many of you (especially the females) might remember a news story of young Katie Goldman. Katie was bullied at school in 2010 because she carried a Star Wars water bottle to school. The males in her class harassed and bullied her stating that "Star Wars was for boys".

Her mom blogged about this incident and the story was picked up by the 501st. All female Star Wars fans all over the world were encouraged to tell Katie that Star Wars was NOT just for boys. In the months following this incident, Katie's mom started to research bullying as a whole. Her findings and story are now contained within the book "Bullied". The first signing of this book was last night and the author asked for the Midwest Garrison to come out in support. Woulf and myself (both members of the MWG and NSB) came out in our Rebel costumes to support this endeavor.

Katie's mom Carrie surprised us with a check for the American Cancer Society in the amount of $250.00 for coming to support the signing. The book was well received and many copies flew off the shelves last night.

Carrie Goldman will also be a featured speaker at Celebration 6.

Eight troopers were on hand to troop this event while everyone else was having fun on vacation in Orlando. An estimated 3000 people attended the event.
We hammed it up with the racing sausages, the Sprecher raven, Comedy sports mascot, and the NARI (National association of the Remodeling Industry) ant.

In attendance were:
Teri Christiansen - TK
Gary Larson - TB
Taggart Cline - TI
Brian Rogers - TK
Kevin Makinen - IG
Dave Johnson - TK
Alan Stanford - Obi Wan
Scott Goebel - Y wing pilot

Mission Report filed:

Though it may appear that Artoo and I are the lone Rebels in this photo of our Making Strides Against Breast Cancer team...
such is not the case.

Undercover Nar Shaddaa Base members included:
RFT Steve S was Darth Vader
Anakin Eric P. was one of the Stormtroopers
and
Jedi Cheryl was the Breast Cancer pink Scout

Our unlikely team of breast cancer walkers was raising funds today for the 7th year in a row that we will be doing the MSABC walk in Aurora IL.

Our team currently holds the lead in donations for the Fox Valley IL MSABC Walk and our team was out to do a little extra fundraising for the cause. The Learning Express Toy Store once again let us use the front of their facility to fundraise from 11:00 AM till 1:00 PM. We were very busy with visitors and at the end of the 3 hours of photos we collected $275.00 for our team's fundraising effort.

Thanks go out to our Rebels and our "partners in crime" from the Midwest Garrison for spending the afternoon Making Strides.

I made pink armbands for all of the participants to wear...
somehow or another...a guy who blew up a planet looks funny wearing his pink armband...

My static Artoo joined in the fundraising

The irrepressible Steve G didn't get much reaction out of this stone faced biker:

Considering I am his boss....RFT Steve (Darth Vader for the day) was showing me no mercy...

but we called a truce

more photos:

And...

To donate to the team....

go here:

and...

yes.....

we do the 5K in costume..

Very Happy

Hey everyone! Just got some time to upload the pics of the Pumpkin Fest parade in Morton from yesterday. Had a great time and got to meet some of the 501st members who are a little closer to me (in Decatur). They are definitely some great guys and I look forward to trooping with them more now that I have my weekends free and the MWG usually has troops closer to me.
