Ok...
I am a little old..
and slightly senile..
and blind in one eye and can't see out of the other...

but
didn't we have a discussion thread somewhere on General Riekeen in the command center at Echo Base?

The Hoth Commander is probably my next costume..
and I can't find that thread...

I remember that discussion, too. It seems like a few threads have disappeared in this forum. Confused

the information was copied and pasted into the Costume Standards forum..

Very Happy

Thanks to a discussion in the Command forum, I offer the costume standards below.
This would be a costume standard not only for face character Riekeen, but other Hoth Echo Base command personnel.

PROPOSED STANDARDS:

Light tan jacket -
with high standing and batted collar,
quilted yoke in a darker tan.
two breast pockets with red or rust colored piping and tab closure
mid thigh in length
(can't tell if lower portion of sleeve is quilted like that of a Hoth Trench Trooper)
Velcro closure all the way down the front.
Two large cargo pockets below the waist
A belt loop on each side and two in the back.

Hoth gloves -
light gray with a darker gray gauntlet and some kind of communicator in there.

Rank Badge-
5 red discs on metal.

Belt:
Medium brown belt with octagonal buckle

Pants:
Tan pants-no distinguising marks....no visible pockets.

Boots
Gray Hoth style gaitered boots

Bruce Boa who played the character died (I think) in 2004.

I have assembling things for this costume already...
but...
this one will take me a lot longer as I have a very busy March coming up.

I think I already know what pattern I want to use...it is a pattern that I used as the base for the Snowspeeder Pilot jacket...
easy to add the poofy collar and pockets...and the different color yoke detail...

Since I made the rank badge for the Rebel Fleet Commander...I already know how to knock that out...
and..
I already have Hoth gloves and boots (and can also wear my RFT boots)...

Well...
the Hoth Commander project has begun...
I don't see me having goo-gobs of time to spend on it in the upcoming weeks, but will try to keep the project moving along as best I can...I hate having my only table in the house taken up by the sewing machine and all associated "stuff"...

I took the pattern I used from my Hoth Snowspeeder jacket and pinned together the front and side pattern pieces to eliminate the seaming...

I have the jacket pieces all cut..

..and started the pain in the butt task of quilting the top brown section (yoke)...

I use rulers and masking tape to mark the quilting lines...and then just sew along the tape...and remove the tape..

fun, fun, fun

Well....I really let this project fall by the wayside...

Looks like the last time I worked on this was May of last year...I got derailed by sooooooooo many other things...I can hardly believe it...

at any rate...
after the post above...I did get this far:

Before I could sew the upper and lower front pieces, I wanted to incorporate the pocket flaps...
so I had to make those next...
also adding in the tabs for the tab closures.

With the pocket flap/tabs made and the red trim put on, I was then able to sew the front yoke and bottom pieces together....sewing in those pocket flaps as I sewed the yoke and bottom front pieces...

I took the project back out today and it has been so long since I looked at it that I had to spend quite a bit of time reviewing the entire thing...
what my next step needed to be...etc..

So today I finished the small loop that the upper pocket tabs go in and next I decided I should address the crazy poofy collar...

I found that the pattern pieces I had cut in May were wrong...and had to re-cut. These collar pieces are just "fly by the seat of your pants" and experiment around. I used fiberfill instead of batting...and I am thinking that might be a mistake...

the collar is partially on...
but...I need to walk away for a time and re-think...

anyway...
this is how it sits now:

I have been steadily working on this project now and look forward to it being over and done with...
lol...

Anyway...
as always...
I have encountered some problems....

The collar for one....I have had the collar off 3 times now and it just does not sit right. I am going to take it off one more time ...make it shorter w/less batting and that will be my final effort on that...hopefully it will look better.

The other thing is when I started this, I found that I had made it oversized...more made for a man larger in stature than me...so the dark brown yoke should probably be up higher and those upper pockets smaller.

I also had to put some big darts into the back...again...this is more or less a men's pattern...I would love to put darts in the front...but those would be too "in your face". When I made the Rebel Fleet Commander I went with a woman's jacket pattern because that one is open in the front...this one is worn closed...so...I wanted more to keep to the line of General Rieekan...
and..
as usual...
there were no woman High Commanders at Echo Base...

The only things I have left to do is re-make the collar
and finish the pants..

I made the rank badge and belt...

I already have my Hoth boots from my Hoth Trench Trooper, the gloves/wrist comm from my Snowspeeder Pilot (which is what I think he wears)...and that is pretty much it.

One thing that I still question is his boots...
I do have the Hoth Boots from my Trench Trooper...and they are tan...
I don't know whether Riekeen wears tan or gray boots...
those two colors have always have always been a matter of debate...
Wink

anyway..
here it is as it sits now:

the pants in progress

Rank badge and belt:

and...
that should be real soon...

lol...

I came home from work tonight and ripped the collar off..
again..

re-shaped it...took out some of the batting ...
and it looks much better...

not great ...
but MUCH better...
and...
with a big snowstorm due in tonight...
what better way to meet it head on but with a Hoth Commander...

Smile

done...
and submitted..

Truth be told...I don't think this costume will be formal because I have tan gaitered boots and the costume standard calls for gray...
and...
since I have lots of formal costumes..
and didn't want to make another pair of boots...
I used my tan gaitered Hoth Trench Trooper boots...

Do we have any visual references (aside from action figures) for the Echo Base command staff gaiters?

I don't have any reference photos of his feet...

And...at one point there was a discussion thread about this costume but I can't find it....I started on this probably about a year ago....and didn't go back to look at the standards till last week.

I did find another irregularity in the Standard....and posted it here:
http://www.rebellegion.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46273

There almost appears to be a line out of the Endor Commander's added into the Hoth Commander...there is no pocketed sleeve on a outer tunic for the Hoth Commander costume....BUT...there is that for the Endor Commanders

I don't remember the discussion about the color of the boots..I think some of the Commanders had jackboots...
and we do know that the gray vs tan debate never produces a real answer....lol...

so..
I went with what I had...
To be honest, it is not like this costume is going to get worn a lot so I didn't want to invest the $$ and ruin another pair of new hiking boots by permanently attaching gray covers over them.....

Well, my point in bringing it up- since we don't have any real photo references at this time- that tan gaiters should also be considered acceptable . . . yes?
