I don't know if you still require table duty to be filled with a formal costume, but I think we did in my day. (correct me if I'm wrong please) Wearing the cap doing that allows you to be more comfortible as suck. It doesn't hurt anyone to have it there

I haven't done table duty since Dragon Con...
and where you are encouraged to wear a formal costume...I don't think it is mandatory...I know at CIII many of the people at the table just had RL T-shirts on....

and...
again...
if you want to wear your baseball hat, field hat, or leg flairs....
go ahead....
at 99% of the events you do...you will be able to do that....
it is just not as big a deal as people think.

I know that I have done many in-formal events in my RFT where I have had my sleeves rolled up if it was really hot out...
or carried a much larger blaster canon just for giggles
..and no one cared or blinked an eye...

It is not as rigid as some folks think.....the Standards really are for initial membership AND for the occasional (and I do mean occasional) formal event that you might do.

found this photo on the FB group Star Wars Rare Vintage Photos. it seems that the ranks were rather mixed. this could be what some are seeing in the movie footage.

you are pointing out that the hat bill seen might not have been on a person wearing an RFT costume...he was just tossed in with the RFT's in a Honor Guard costume?

Uh, no.

Please do take a closer look.

There are two guys in RFT uniforms and caps instead of helmets. They're not honor guards, they're RFTs. They have black vests and blue shirts.

so. Phyllis, ShVagYeR and Blair, i was looking at the picture that you responded with and then kept examining my own when my wife looked over my shoulder and was like "watcha doin'?" I 'splained to her and zoomed in on the picture more and then she immediately pointed at the following:

apparently she was really good at playing Where's Waldo. So by our eyes, I call your two baseball capped RFT's and raise you one more Wink

Well, the good thing is, coming back to the comic book where we discovered those field caps first, that we now know that there wasn't colorist's mistake (caps are olive/khaki and not grey).

Now, aside of the discussion we are having, I would be delighted to see some better quality pictures, to assume how did the cap exactly look like on screen.

Ths could be tricky - because could be a good guess that those caps (wardrobe mistake, in real life? Not enough helmets around?) may be the 'limp' fatigue caps issued to the honor guards and mixed people.
We have some better images of the officers behind Leia with those cheap caps.

So we got in a can of worm: until a better picture proved othervise, the 'canonic' RFT may wear soft light khaki/olive green caps - not anything that my look like the 'norge' cap with folds (basically, a summer version of Hoth cap) seen in cartoons.

So we open a backdoor to RFT to exist with a soft cap (without helmet) under the same catch-22 than pilots can not have helmets.
So, we can have lot of 'bathrobe RFTs' without helmet that are 'formal' but nobody would recognize.
Quality would step backward, and by far, as RAID being guilty of accepting 'halloween/walmart" costumes in the whole of RL pointing toward better costumes.

The stopgap would be increase qualiti of the other part in RFT standard - basically, no cuffs on sleeves, box pockets on trousers (and not the pleated ones in BDU trousers).
Thus, a good 3/4 of existing RFTs will became 'informal' overnight.

To be honest, pushing, and pushing so hard, to have a 'formal status' for a soft cap would be counterproductive.
The floopy cheap shapeless khaki cap we know for sure was in that scene would be formal, untill some could prove that they used the (not phisically existing) high-quality 'comic' one.

Just to clarify...

these field caps/baseball caps/unique Yavin cap

- whatever they are (which is unknown at this time)

will not ever replace the RFT bucket....

The RFT bucket will be required for a formal costume....

I'm sad to see you're so firmly against it. Sad It is my understanding that we in the RL strive to re-create accurately what has been seen on screen in SW. The helmetless RFTs have been seen there, ergo they are something we can re-create.

Here's more evidence:

The caps appear to be the same type that was worn by these gentlemen over here (click for hi-res):
