I have a ANH senatorial Leia, which I've been meaning to submit for months. I finished it last minute before Celebration, and didn't take the waist gathering into account when I hemmed it. It hits exactly at my ankle bone, so I know I'm pushing it.

What do you guys think? Lost cause, or just pushing it? To be fair, in both pictures, I was running back into position and my boots are a little motion blurred. (Stupid Macbook Photo Booth.)

You'd need to ask a Leia LCJ to know if they'd pass it. Personally, I agree it's a little bit short. If needed, you could take it apart at the waist and add a bit of fabric where the belt will sit. The belt will hide the extra fabric. I don't suppose your hem is long enough you could let out some of it?

No, there's nothing I can let out at the hem, bad me.

I was thinking of mutilating it completely, and just adding a new skirt part and a casing for elastic. I like the idea of adding fabric at the belt, but I think my belt is too thin to hide something substantial.

I just wanted to know a few opinions before I started begging friends to come over and take decent non-webcam pictures of me. (Or before I spent a tank of gas to get to the nearest fabric store for more fabric.) Very Happy

Adding fabric at the belt line is a great idea. The outfit does look good on you.

too short. I remember my wifes ANH Leia and RL told us it can't be short. I am glad we followed the advice.

Well, Jet-set fabric isn't that expensive at least... and now you don't have a Celebration rushing you. I bet if you did it over it will turn out much better, and you will be glad you did.

Just my 2 cents...

Thanks for all responses, I'll wait until I fix it to submit! It should be interesting... I need to think out how I will do it. Right now it has no elastic in the middle, and it's lined. Every seam is serged, so it shouldn't fall apart during the "surgery".

I'm thinking of adding a channel for the elastic between the top and skirt, like with the "under the belt extension" idea, but with a new skirt. This might actually work out better then my doing it in one piece, since I can avoid hemming the bottom this way by keeping the top open. (Not sure if that makes sense but it does in my head. Razz )

I don't know if it will help at all, but I made my ANH gown with a waist seam, the tutorial is here: http://costumesandartwork.blogspot.com/2010/10/anh-leia-senatorial-gown.html

If you don't care about having a seam on the inside of your gown, it would make attaching a skirt much easier, my method hides the seams inside between the outer and inner layers.

Oh thank you! That does help a lot, I think I'll go that route. When you made the channel for the elastic, did you make one side sewn though where the pieces attach or did you have that in the middle of the channel? I'm trying to work out what will end up looking the neatest.

It's been a couple years, but if I recall correctly, I just used the seam allowance from one side and made the elastic channel that way. I believe I used the outer layer to create the channel.
