Also, by dumb luck the other day, we found a blanket at Bed Bath and Beyond that may be a good candidate for the shawl. They have a special right now for $19.99... any size! It is cotton so it's thinner than the screen used stuff, but the texture seems okay to get by with until something better comes along.

Hey, that's a pretty good find. I've seen shawls made from less accurate fabric. Rolling Eyes

I experimented with the upholstery leather that I got the other day and did one of the existing shins over. When I pulled the vinyl off, I re-hydrated the center vertical rib to undo the marks the rubber bands made when they were molded. I also tapered the vertical rib down a bit. The leather is a TON easier to work with than the vinyl since it's stretchy and It was nice not having to mess with the heat gun! I think it looks a bit better since it's a natural material.

The vinyl is on the left

The loose piece is a test for a different leather/vinyl spray that I got. This is in bright/natural light and I think it's the closest.

Also, I have another set that is being built right now and are in the mold/taper process right now and need to dry. [/img]

Being cotton doesn't make it thinner, its the weave that counts for that Smile And it really is not much thinner. To bulk it up put it in a hot water wash before cutting to shape Smile It'll shrink enough to make the weave firmer.

I'm actually pretty sure the original was a cotton beadspread/throw to begin with Smile In close ups you can see classic pilling you get with cotton.

For those in NZ/Oz Spotlight has waffle weave cotton blankets on sale in the kids section of bedding.

The replacement/upgrade sewing machine came in so I'm off working on the top detail... that sucker will go through 1/4" of rawhide! WOOT!

This is what I've come up with so far.... these are just test pieces since I don't want to risk wrecking a bunch of leather from a full overlay. I'm using smooth vinyl with built in batting to try to create the different texture and poofy look. I sewed a vinyl wrap over leather strips that vary in thickness. And yes, the color will be fixed for the end product Razz

one leather strip

three leather strips

three

I think I like the one with three the best, but it's a bit harder to work with so it will take a bit more time to get it right.

Does anyone have any tips on how to go about finding a pattern for the Battle costume? I know that Simplicity had done one, but that it was apparently quite inaccurate? Grateful for any help!

You should be able to get some helpful tips from the above link.

Thanks! What's the general consensus on the Simplicity pattern here? Is it accurate enough or does it need extensive modification?

I don't have that particular pattern, but if it's anything like their others, it will require a lot of modification. This outfit has some pretty specific seaming that Simplicity (and others) tend to skip.

I got a little ADD and decided to switch over to the boots. Long story short, I kinda wrecked my wife's original pair so I ordered up some Timberland Nellie boots that were on sale. The sole seemed like a good match and I figured I could just shoot leather spray on them for a match. After completely stripping one boot down, it still didn't look right with the spray so I decided to try out an overlay for them and try to match the screen used boots, minus the side zipper.

I just wish I would have done this to the wrecked ones instead of spending $75 on the Timberlands... live and learn. Oh well, at least these aren't pleather.
