The fabric will have very visible textured ridges on it like corduroy, but not fuzzy. Probably your best bet is to look at home dec fabric, not sure if you'll be able to find it in silk. Actually, I just thought of something, the home dec fabric I got for my gown is a watered silk look with ridges in it, and the back side of the fabric is one solid color, and I got that at JoAnn's.

Ok, so according to "The Phrontistery"
grosgrain: heavy close-woven corded silk

And I found this in searching for "grosgrain"

http://www.tutu.com/fab_beng.html

which is a collection of "bengalines" and has a side-by-side-by-side comparison of different grosgrains and an explanation of each, and comes in a whole bunch of colors.

I have no idea whatsoever if it's at all helpful, but there it is.

I am also working on the Red Throne Room gown, anyone have an idea as to the "egg" shapes, I have looked everywhere I can think of, and being that it is the right time of year, I thought I'd have no problem finding something, but blah! they are all too small. Sad

When I made this back in 1999, I used plastic oval serving bowls that I painted with model paint for the egg shapes. The only problem with that, is that the shape was great, but the bottom of the bowls were flat, so the eggs looked a bit cut off. When I remake this, I'm going to use the bowls as a base, model out the curvature on the bottom and see if my friends with a vacuform table can pull some for me out of a clear plastic. Then paint them up and string lights through it.

I don't know if it's a possibility for you, but our Michael's has all sorts of giant sized eggs for Easter (I think some were as large as 14" tall).

You can get some clear eggs at the dollar store sometimes. I think they come with nasty candy inside, but who cares?! Smile

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, unfortunately I think I have exhausted the retail possibilities, I have a great size "egg shape" I can use - if I can find someone with a vacuform set up. Aside from the head piece and the embroidery (which I am dreading) this has been a challenge...but, this has always been my favorite gown of hers, so onward I go! Smile

good luck with it! I know that feeling, as when I first saw this outfit in teaser ads and in the movie, I knew I just had to have it. Unfortunately, it is no where NEAR RL standards at this point, nor do I have any decent resolution pics of it (and I can't fit in it anymore to take some), so I'll have to re-make it for myself.

I had the most fun I've ever had making a costume while I was making the headdress. It was a highly creative endeavor for me.

ps. I like your avatar. Razz

Well, this is what I get for giving up on retail. 3 days ago, there was nothing, but on a whim I went to my local Dollar Tree store and what do I find? MY EGGS!!!

SUPER EXCITED! I know it's the small things in life, but hey... Wink

JaclynGFC-Like your avatar too! Wink Amadalia

Awesome. It's always interesting how when you look for a particular thing, you can't find it. But when you go looking for something else, you end up finding it.

I'm like that too-getting excited about small things. Very Happy

yeah, i love when things just jump out at you after you stop looking, or when something that you would never at all think could be used as part of a piece just jump out and say "Use Me! I'm Perfect!"--which happened when I found a cornucopia for this project back in 1999. Cornucopia, btw, make a great foundation for the horn part of the headdress, and I will quite likely be re-using mine when I remake the headdress later this year.

Oooh awesome!!

I got the sample sheet of bengalines. This stuff looks perfect. It's not silk satin but instead is cotton/rayon, but it looks close enough. It's got the horizontal ribbing (or at least, I HOPE that it goes horizontal and not vertical on the fabric).

I actually just realized that the two collars aren't the same fabric as the rest of the dress; the collars don't have the ridges but are completely flat. In one exhibit photo, the flash bounces off the two differently and you can really see that they're not the same.
